Although this is certainly nothing new, there has been an increase in rhetoric that suggests that citizens take up arms against the government. In the wake of the shooting at a political rally held by Representative Gabrielle Giffords, the media began asking whether violent rhetoric could lead to violent acts and politicians began to call for greater civility in political discourse. This essay examines the rhetoric of Sarah Palin and Sharron Angle to explore the rhetorical implications of a worldview that deeply distrusts the government and considers armed insurrection as an appropriate corrective to a government run amok

Working paper for my PhD dissertation

The former independent states Duchy of Modena and Archbishopric Princedom of Salzburg became in the 19th century administrative units of the Kingdom of Italy and of the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary respectively. These two events marked an important step in the development of modern and industrial states inside Europe, which included many social tensions.
Mobilising for WWI and then trying to demobilise meant renewed difficulties for the Province of Modena and Land Salzburg.
Long-term social tensions combined with war-related tensions resulted in a general social crisis. Modena was able to exit this crisis only through the "Fascist normalisation", whereas Salzburg seemed for a while to reach stability under the First Republic.
I am investigating the role of long-term structural problems, the role of war-related complications, the role of war as a catalyser in a comparative, often transnational and synecdochical perspective.
Some of the main issues are:
- POW, Refugees and DP, civil prisoners and their relations with local populations
- nationalists in the urban petty bourgeoisie and nationality-related tensions and mobilisations
- landowners, peasants and conservative mentalities
- Early fascist movements
- Spanish flu, cattle diseases, earthquakes and other catastrophes in a mobilised society
