As networks increase in size, heterogeneity, complexity and pervasiveness, effective management of such networks becomes more important and increasingly difficult. In this context, PBNM (Policy-Based Network Management) has been gaining popularity in the recent years. New demands on internetworking, services specification, QoS and generically on network management functionality have been driving users to consider this paradigm in their own networks.
As people start exploiting PBNM, another aspect comes to attention: transactional integrity. Transactional control envisages achieving consistent state changes along the network. In other words, state transition in network devices is only authorized if all the related operations are successfully taken.
In this paper we propose a transactional control mechanism for PBNM systems, namely its assurance across different systems and different network domains.

New demands on internetworking, on services specification, on QoS achievement and generically on network management functionality, have driven this paradigm to a very important level. The main idea is to provide services that allow specifying management and operational rules in the same way people do business. Despite the main association of this technology with network management solutions, its generality allows to extend these principles to any business process inside an organization. In this paper we discuss the main proposals in the field, namely the IETF/DMTF model, and we present a proposal that allows the specification of policy rules through a user-friendly and component-oriented graphical interface.

Policy-Based Network Management (PBNM) is the
application of specific, organisation-level rules in the context of
networking, in particular for network management operations.
The specification of a policy is performed in a policy language,
usually following a textual representation. However, humans
process images faster than text and they are prepared to process
information presented in two or more dimensions: sometimes it is
easier to explain things using figures and their graphical relations
than writing textual representations.
This paper describes a visual language, in the form of graphics
that are executed in a networking environment, to define a
network management policy. This approach allows to map visual
tokens and corresponding arrangements into other languages to
which a mapping is defined.

The IETF has provided a framework to describe the concept but some aspects still open like transactional control. In fact transactional control mechanisms are receiving today great attention in the scope of network management. In here, we identify the lacks of current management paradigms concerning transactional control and we propose a policy-based network management system that allows specify operations over aggregations of agents and that provides high-level atomic transactions.

In particular, we describe how this infrastructure has been extended to support digitally augmented paper through a special transformation component that can map active areas of document pages to information objects so that user- and contextdependent interaction can be supported. Our infrastructure is sufficiently general and flexible to adapt to, not only emerging and even unanticipated technologies in the area of interactive paper, but also the rapidly expanding interaction sphere of hypermedia.

Specifically, we discuss the need for digital annotation of printed materials and describe how various technologies for digitally augmented paper can be used in support of work practices. The state of the art in terms of both commercial and research solutions is described in some detail, with an analysis of the extent to which they can support both the writing and reading activities associated with annotation. Our framework is based on an extension of the information server that was developed within the Paper++ project to support enhanced reading. It is capable of handling both formal and informal annotation across printed and digital media, exploiting a range of technologies for information capture and display. A prototype demonstrator application for mammography is presented to illustrate both the functionality of the framework and the status of existing technologies.

In this essay we discuss the design of a technology that interweaves developments in new materials, electronics and software, and seeks to provide a cheap and accessible solution to creating new affinities between digital content, in whatever form, and ordinary paper. The technology and its design draws from a broad range of field studies, including research in classrooms and museums. These delineate the requirements and considerations that inform solutions to enhancing paper whilst preserving its integrity. The paper also discusses a naturalistic experiment, an evaluation in a museum, where we assessed the technology and the solution. We also chart the progressive development of this solution and the ways in which seemingly simple actions and issues became reconstituted as highly complex technical and analytic problems.

The authors describe how recent technologies for digitally augmented paper maps can be used to develop interactive paper maps that provide value-added services for tourists through digital overlays. The iServer mixed media platform can easily be extended to support new types of digital or physical multimedia resources. It provides core functionality for link and user management whereas link authoring is handled by plug-ins for specific resource types. Different forms of collaborative cross-media link authoring and link sharing are supported by a distributed iServer implementation based on peer-to-peer technologies.

These findings show how the book’s ergonomics provide a flexible and easily accessible interface which engenders fluid collaboration between pairs of children. These qualities are also observed when children work with the augmented paper booklet. The value of digital content is demonstrated in a participatory design activity, where we find how digital media can ‘bring to life’ the information presented on paper. In contrast to developments focused narrowly on new technologies, this study presents evidence for the use and value of paper, and paper augmented with digital media, in educational settings.
