Judo has been considered in theory an inclusive martial art because its creator, Jigoro Kano, stressed safety, etiquette and moral teachings irrespective of age, size or gender of its adherents. However, the social and cultural environment in Japan has traditionally discriminated against women both outside and inside the dojo (training place). We treat this issue historically, considering the broader context of the Japanese social, political and cultural developments.

ANAEROBIC ENDURANCE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDENTS AS MEASURED BY REPEATED MAXIMAL EXERCISE BOUTS
Key words: Maximal exercise, repeated exercise bouts, anaerobic endurance
The aim of the study was to assess the performance of repeated anaerobic strength exercises, push-ups (PUP) and knee bends in supine position (KBS).
A group of 12 students aged 19 - 25 years were subjected to 6 series of PUP and KBS exercises, lasting 30-s each, and separated by 15-s breaks. Maximum and mean numbers of events in the entire sets of exertions were recorded and the performance indices (PI) were computed for individual subjects.
The values of PI were not correlated with the maximum numbers of events per 30 s and this enabled classifying subjects by their maximum strength and anaerobic endurance.
