The research suggests that maize use as a fermented beverage was only one option for developing reciprocal social relations. The manufacture of intoxicating beverages from plants such as manioc tubers, potatoes, pineapples, and palm fruits would have limited the spread of maize into those regions where indigenous groups already uses these alternatives or did not drink alcoholic beverages. This article analyses the differential social role of maize and early ceramic dispersion in South America and the Caribbean by taking into account the consumption of fermented beverages.

For so doing, it inquires into (1) the emergence of the counterterrorism doctrine after 9/11 in the United States and (2) its influence in the creation and implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Terrorism and the (3) Colombian Security doctrine Seguridad Democrática. This three-layered analysis provides a comprehensive account on how the U.S. counterterrorism doctrine became a leading global discourse against terrorism. It shows how the discourse changes throughout these three layers to gain legitimacy, and particularly how it is transformed when it reaches new sites of reception.

Description of a new species of Liaghinella (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Emesinae) from the Colombian Andes, with notes on its feeding habits and conservation status

Until now, the genus Liaghinella Wygodzinsky, 1966 included only L. farri Wygodzinsky, 1966, described from Jamaica. To find this new species for the first time in continental South America and at so high an altitude is remarkable. The new species is close to L. farri, but differs in color pattern, and in the structure of the head, male genitalia, and fore leg armature. For the first time a female of Liaghinella is described and sexual differences are highlighted. Keys to separate the related genera and the two known species of Liaghinella are provided. Biological information on the new species’ feeding habits on spiders is presented and discussed. Dorsal habitus photographs, in addition to photographs and illustrations of other morphological structures, are provided. Finding this new species in the remnants of an Andean montane forest adjacent to urban areas highlights the necessity of local conservation efforts in the Colombian Andes.

Carvalhomiris brachypterus Maldonado and Ferreira, 1971, its type species, is redescribed and two species are described as new, C. bifurcatus sp. nov. from Ecuador, and C. truncatus sp. nov. from Colombia. Selected external morphological structures of the head, pronotum, metathoracic scent gland efferent area, pretarsus, and egg are documented with scanning electron micrographs for the two new species. Dorsal habitus photographs of macropterous and brachypterous specimens illustrating color variation, line drawings of male and female genitalia of all species, and a key to adults of the species are provided. The potential relationships of Carvalhomiris within Orthotylini are discussed, the genus now being placed in the Zanchius group.

To address this gap, complete regional species assemblages of major marine taxa are being progressively assessed against the Categories and Criteria of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The first analysis of entire major components of the biota of a large marine biogeographic region was conducted in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP). It is based on recently completed IUCN Red List assessments for all known species of bony and cartilaginous shorefishes, corals, mangroves, and seagrasses in the TEP. Twelve percent of the greater than 1,300 species assessed are in threatened categories, indicative of elevated extinction risk. Spatial analysis of all assessed taxonomic groups, including previous IUCN Red List assessments for seabirds, marine mammals and marine turtles, highlights specific geographical areas of elevated threatened species richness. The distribution of threatened species in the TEP is primarily linked to areas with high rates of over-fishing, habitat loss and increasing ENSO event impacts, as well as oceanic islands with high stochastic risk factors for endemic species. Species assigned to the highest threat categories have life-history traits that likely decrease their resilience to various regional and site-specific threats. Comprehensive information in the form of IUCN Red List assessments combined with spatial analysis will greatly help to refine both site and species-specific marine conservation priorities in the TEP.

Six adult specimens and one nymph were collected in the municipalities of Vegachí and San Carlos, department of Antioquia. In both localities P. spissicornis was collected from palms (Arecaceae) in association with Rhodnius pallescens (Reduviidae: Triatominae). Phimophorus spissicornis was found on the axils of palm fronds of Attalea butyracea and Oenocarpus bataua. Dorsal habitus illustrations of the male, female, and late instar nymph of P. spissicornis are provided.
