Herman Dooyeweerd's interpretation of sphere sovereignty develops Kuyper's conception in terms of its being rooted in and motivated from a distinctly Christian religious orientation, and results in a view of society that is neither individualistic, nor collectivistic. In this paper Dooyeweerd's philosophically elaborated account is examined in terms of his notions of a basic creational diversity; modality and individuality structures; societal communities; sovereignty over-against autonomy/decentralization, and subsidiarity; distinct inner structural principles, the intrinsic limit of state power.

This study explores the question of if and how associative bonds
based on violence, control and self-restraint mediated by contractual relationships become institutionalised within societies and discusses the cultural factors that determine this threshold. It investigates the trade-off between formalised forms of interaction that safeguard individual rights and secure state control, and less formal modes of civility that deepen trans-state interconnectedness. It asks whether civility is the result of a global civilising process in the sense highlighted by Norbert Elias, whereby affect control is matched by formal norms guaranteed by legitimate institutions, or whether it is rather the much more complex constellation of specific actualisations of the more general tradeoff as just defined. After summarising the current twists of the meaning of civility against the background of liberal and modernist precedents and delineating the alternative patterns of civility within Islamic, especially modern Ottoman, history, the analysis critically interrogates Weber’s notion of Verbruderung as the pre-modern root concept of organised forms of common action, mutual solidarity and civic participation. Finally, it questions whether this idea fits the historic forms of association in the Islamic world, in particular the privileging of a lower threshold of institutionalisation of the associational bond than has traditionally been found in the European experience—and which survives in the current anxieties about resurgent mahalle (neighbourhood) informal governance in the AKP’s Turkey.

Civicness in organizations: a reflection on the relationship between professionals and managers

The civicness of organizations expresses itself in how they enable positive interaction over such conflicts between their members. This paper focuses specifically on the relationship between professionals and their managers. By infusing social behaviour with civil values, organizations can contribute to a wider culture of citizenship.

Focusing throughout the discussion on the two fundaments on which civil society rests – its organizations and its people – I analyze the ways in which these are presently changing character and opening up to new ways of organizing. The century-long dominance of popular movement organizations is seen to be giving way to a more heterogeneous flora of organizational forms, where provision of services – as opposed to (traditionally strong) advocacy – is gradually gaining importance. The long-marginalized 19th century tradition of charity is observed to re-emerge as a legitime practice of civil society in the 21st century. At the same time, and after having during much of the 20th century looked to the welfare state for inspiration and partnerships, Nordic civil society organizations are today increasingly turning towards the business sphere. They are borrowing organizational models and internalizing patterns of thought that originate in the world of corporations. Together, these developments are suggested to lead to a new wave of re-hybridization of the Nordic civil societies and their organizations.

Fighting for Unionist Home Rule: competing national identities in Dublin 1880-1922.

Dublin’s development in the 19th century was unlike that of other UK cities. Deposed as a capital in 1800, the city maintained a strong sense of its own importance. From the 1840s the Catholic nationalist majority won control of the council, encouraging the middle-class flight to the suburbs. Independent new townships, populated by Protestants and governed by unionist councils, encircled the old city. Minute books, press coverage and street furniture demonstrate the methods councils used to establish their differing national identities. Contrasting reactions to royal visits or the outbreak of war clearly illustrate these differences.
From Belfast to Birmingham, UK cities improved their administrations by annexing suburban townships. In Dublin this logic did not apply. Encircled by unionist districts, the city could not increase its finances or resolve its chronic slum problems. Unionists, viewing the nationalist Home Rule movement with growing anxiety, resisted annexation by the nationalist city, citing its higher taxes and political corruption. Conflicting national identities fuelled resentment and hostility
Dublin’s cluster of competing councils allows us to examine the role of the city in expressing nationalisms. This paper discusses connections between civil society, national identity and urban government, and considers the tensions arising from layered identities in a shared urban space.
