Identifying FRBR Work-Level Data in MARC Bibliographic Records for Manifestations of Moving Images

In response, the Online Audiovisual Catalogers (OLAC) created a task force to study the issues related to creating and using FRBR-based work-level records for moving images. This article presents one part of the task force’s work: it looks at the feasibility of creating provisional FRBR work-level records for moving images by extracting data from existing manifestation-level bibliographic records. Using a sample of 941 MARC records, a subgroup of the task force conducted a pilot project to look at five characteristics of moving image works. Here they discuss their methodology; analysis; selected results for two elements, original date (year) and director name; and conclude with some suggested changes to MARC coding and current cataloging policy.
Media Finders: Improving the Browsability of Media Collections via the OPAC

Users must search the OPAC to find these materials, which is difficult for users who don't know what sorts of searching options are available or what materials the libraries have. The libraries have developed a series of Web forms that provide guided search options for various types of media, including feature films, non-classical music, and spoken recordings. The Media Finders provide better exposure for and more convenient searching of subsets of library materials. This article describes the development of the Media Finders, their benefits and drawbacks, and background information on the technical elements and searching strategies used by the Media Finders.

On the Code4Lib Journal, technology, and the universe of library cataloging and metadata.
I sometimes feel myself a bit of an odd duck on the Code4Lib Journal editorial committee as I am not a coder. I am a cataloger.
However, when I think about this a little more, it no longer seems so odd for a cataloger to be on the editorial committee. The future of library cataloging and metadata is inextricably bound up with technology...

This paper discusses some challenges for using LCSH for faceted browsing and navigation in library catalogs. Ideas are provided for improving results through system design, changes to LCSH practice, and LCSH structure.

FRBR and Facets Provide Flexible, Work-Centric Access to Items in Library Collections

The prototype provides a Work-centric view of a moving image collection that is integrated with bibliographic and holdings data. Two sets of facets address important user needs: “what do you want?” and “how/where do you want it?” enabling patrons to narrow, broaden and pivot across facet values instead of limiting them to the tree-structured hierarchy common with existing FRBR applications. The data model illustrates how FRBR is being adapted and applied beyond the traditional library catalog.

All known Cyrillic manuscripts with Glagolitic insertions are taken into account in order to constitute a catalogue of these and to perform a complex scholarly analysis, that aims the classification of the Glagolitic insertions and the clarification of the reasons of their appearance in every Cyrillic manuscript (or group of manuscripts) under consideration.

An evaluation period led by the Library of Congress is currently underway and it is likely that the implementation of RDA will begin sometime in mid-2011. This paper looks briefly at the origins of RDA, provides a high level overview of RDA and reviews some of the major differences that cataloguers and library users can expect to find between RDA and AACR2.

This How-To-Do-It-Manual® on the cataloguing of digital and non-print media comes at an important transition period for the cataloguing community. Mary Beth Weber and Fay Angela Austin, two experienced technical services librarians at Rutgers University, have not only succeeded in updating the original work on nonbook formats begun by Weber in 1993, they have also written one of the first books to guide practice as cataloguers negotiate the shift from AACR2 to RDA (Resource Description
and Access).

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report the use of ICT by cataloguers at a private university library in Nigeria.
Design/methodology/approach – A description of the procedures and processes undertaken is given.
Findings – The description of the processes involved in the use of ICT by cataloguers reveals the effectiveness and efficiency of online searches for the purpose of cataloguing and classification. A few were identified. The study shows the potential offered by the use of ICT, which libraries in developing nations – and indeed Nigeria – have not fully embraced. The paper reveals the low level of ICT literacy in libraries in Nigeria and concludes that this is a result of the deficiency in the practical training of librarians in the use of ICT in Nigerian library schools.
Practical implications – The conclusion is that there is an urgent need for librarians in developing nations to gain proficiency in the use of ICT as a tool in libraries.
Originality/value – The paper provides information on the level of ICT use for cataloguing and classification in a private university library in Nigeria. This experience shows the importance of why libraries in developing countries should address the desired level of ICT literacy among their librarians.
