RESISTANCE TO REPRESENTATION, CRIME AND NOMADISM: THELMA AND LOUISE’S WORLD
Thelma and Louise, as a cult film, attempts to problematize gender roles and examines gender as a cultural and social construction through the lens of Butler’s “performative” concept. Thus, Thelma and Louise, challenges patriarchal ideologies of gender construction and redefine a new space for women outside of patriarchal control. This article uses the notion of nomadism to analyze power relations. Journey, which is central to this work, re-constructs gender via nomadic performances. New performances on new road that women engage set them free. They leave the place of being representation of patriarchal images and occupy new subject position as an agent. Eventually, Thelma and Louise, produce feminist catharsis to empower woman spectator.
