Internet use in Brazil: speeding up or lagging behind?

Previous evidence on the subject initially presented indicates the prevalence of contrasting aspects: some outstanding positive initiatives and results towards democratization of the internet, as well as the maintenance of great digital inequalities. New evidence on the evolution of internet access and use is also discussed herein, based on analyses of longitudinal data obtained from the Brazilian Census Bureau’s Annual Survey (IBGE/PNAD, 2005, 2008). After describing aspects of increase in access to the internet, we focus on the evolution of different types of everyday life internet uses, particularly those that might contribute to individual and community development. How accesses and uses are gradually incorporating the less privileged sectors of the Brazilian adult population is also considered in the analyses. The results obtained reinforce the previous contrasting evidences: outstanding growth in access and in diversified uses are observed - suggesting intensive appropriation of internet technology and resources by the population - as well as the persistence of great inequalities. These circumstances indicate that the digital divide in Brazil is still a great challenge to be faced through comprehensive and long-term policies and initiatives.

Olive Drab in Black and White: The Brazilian Expeditionary Force, the US Army and Racial National Identity

Based on diaries, trench journals, newspapers, and memoirs, this paper explores the ways in which Brazilians of diverse origins, rather than ideology producing elites, projected their own national perceptions on race relations. Their representations, however, were not uniform. Rather, they offered an array of alternative racial national identities varying from all-white troops to zealous support of their “Racial Democracy.” Civil rights activists in the US used these images to condemn racial segregation while some Brazilians criticized the Brazilian Army’s hypocrisy and racism.

In this article we look at the destruction of the Amazon forest through an archaeological lens. We describe the devastation brought about by illegal loggers and ranchers to the last remaining old-growth forests of Maranhão (NE Brazil), where the Awá hunter-gatherers live. We argue that archaeology can provide an alternative and more critical look at global consumerism by manifesting the crude materiality and abject
violence that lurks behind the goods consumed in the West. We followed the tracks of a group of loggers deep inside the forest and report what we saw.

The brazilian team goes to war: consumption, work, the nation in 2010 World Cup advertising
Abstract:
This article examines the discourses raised about the national soccer team during the 2010 World Cup. Our main focus are the advertisements of Brahma beer, official sponsor of the Brazilian team, which nurtured the concept of a “warrior team”, identified in narratives about the team itself, at the intersections between the sport, consumption, nationalistic discourses and the world of work.

Title in English: Political Campaigns and Online Strategies:
The case of the 2010 Brazilian Elections. Text in Portuguese. Abstract in English: This article examines some of the main changes that Brazilian elections have faced thanks to the new media. More specifically, it studies how the candidate José Serra (PSDB, Brazilian Social Democracy Party) used Twitter over the 2010 presidential race. The text analyzes the new behaviors perceived once the digital media play an important role in getting votes. Are there new methods to run political campaigns? Or indeed one sees the continuity in the ways to reach voters? The study investigates the messages (tweets) posted by José Serra (@ joseserra_) during the 15 days before the 2nd round of presidential elections (17 to October 31, 2010). The empirical sample is based on the 221 messages posted by the candidate in the chosen period of time. On the one hand, we can say that the use of Twitter becomes important (a) to promote the public image of Serra; (b) to build a network with thousands of users willing to support him; and (c) to stimulate informal styles of interaction. On the other hand, it becomes evident that electoral strategies, even on Twitter, remain constrained by traditional conceptions of political marketing. KEYWORDS: Democracy. Elections. Internet. Online Campaigns. Twitter.

Jean Baptiste Debret, the famous French artist, documented the daily life in Brazil during the 19th century in his numerous paintings. These images of colonial and imperial Brazil are commonly used as illustrations in history textbooks. This article analyzes the work of black slaves in Brazil from a pedagogical perspective contextualized within Brazilian history using one of Debret’s paintings. The article also addresses the painting’s use by scholars in history books. The analysis reveals clear social relations of domination and submission between the owner and slave in Debret’s painting. These relations are demonstrated through the expressive form of the corporal posture. There is, however, the propagation of a stereotypical view of black slaves in Brazil.
Keywords: The Work of Slaves. Corporal Posture. Domination and Submission. Slavery in Brazil. Debret.
