Moreover, I want to claim that it is only in failure that the embodied limb and tool are phenomenologically distinct. I will go on to argue that this claim is essential for understanding the phenomenon of failed embodiment, such as that found within the clowning tradition, before concluding with a short provocation regarding the social and political implications of such a view.

Through analyzing the participants' open-ended narratives as performances in which the narrators draw upon performativities to reconcile the absurdity associated with their deemed `unprofessional' bodies legitimately occupying a professional space, the author traces the emergence of embodied professional heroes in four variations: the Super Hero, Warrior Hero, Tragic Hero, and Rogue Hero, each which illuminates the importance of the body in the construction of personal narratives of professionalism. In conclusion, the author calls for attention to the potential performance of the Anti Hero across personal narratives that emerge in unmarked bodies in order to attend the underlying performativities and discourses of power within all narratives of professionalism.

This work of Net Art is a relational art performance in which a player (or interactor) engages in a dialogue with the interface. This game is available online at http://kastorfakto.com/game. Its interactive journey is a social experience through simple daily life activities.
Exploring the interactive game (Chevassu, 1995, p.136), the interactor gets to know the protagonists and watches them perform three routine activities. In an entertaining and engaging spirit, the interactor can get involved and listen as I speak to three different persons. They can mix with ‘Simon’,‘Pascale’or ‘Patrick’ and watch as these participants groom themselves and wait before eventually meeting me. These ordinary activities lead to a fun and spontaneous exchange. The protagonists agreed to be the guinea pigs in my exploration of the operative process of desire in daily life. When entering the game, the interactors can select a scene. They collect points by manipulating visual and audio elements, and discover videos hidden behind some of the artefacts. They are able to experiment with the game either to improve their score, or just for the pleasure of exploring the three stages.
This interactive online work results from several developmental versions, and has been tested by various control groups. A research report has been conducted and the target audience age ranges between 13 and 33 years old.

Imposing a Networked Vibrotactile Communication System for Improvisational Suggestion

Specifically, this is achieved by making use of vibrotactile feedback as a signalling tool within an improvisational setting. A discussion of the current developments regarding the use of networks within improvisation is presented, followed by an outline of the benefits of utilising the haptic feedback channel as a further sensory information pathway when performing digital music. We describe a case study of the system within the context of our computer-mediated improvisational duo Můstek, involving piano, percussion and live electronics. Here, a cueing system or framework is imposed over the improvisation and is transmitted directly to the skin of the performers via tiny vibrations. Additionally, performers may make use of simple vibrotactile signals to enhance traditional visual cues that are often employed within performance. A new work, Socks and Ammo, was created using NeVIS, and was presented at various international conferences and festivals. We also tested the system itself within a group of postgraduate researchers and composers. Qualitative evaluation of the musical outcomes as experienced both by the performers and by the listeners at these events is offered, as well as implications about the nature of collaborative music-making.

Effects of Spectral Features of Sound on Gesture Type and Timing

The purpose was to determine the effects of the sounds’ spectral and temporal features on synchronization and gesture characteristics. In particular, we focused on the correlation between sounds and three gesture features: maximum acceleration, discontinuity, and total quantity of motion. Our findings indicate that discrete, discontinuous motion resulted in better synchronization, while spectral features of sound had a significant effect on the quantity of motion.

This piece was written in the context of my graduate seminar The Rise (and Demise) of the State in the Near East taught at Brown University's Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World in Fall 2007. I am grateful to the whole group for the intriguing and heated discussions in that seminar.
