Chapter synopsis: 'On Erich Fromm: Why he left the Frankfurt School':
-Biography: Erich Fromm
-Erich Fromm was very critical of Freudian psychoanalysis. The Frankfurt School disapproved of that.
-Tension arose between Fromm and Horkheimer/Adorno/Marcuse and other pro-Freudian contemporaries
-Erich Fromm had reservations about the Frankfurt School's desire to merge psychoanalysis with Marxist theory
-Controversy arose over the Frankfurt School's decision not to publish a manuscript that Fromm wrote, with Weiss. This was a report of their landmark authoritarian personality study of 1931. The topic and methodology shaped the Frankfurt School's later research into authoritarianism (e.g. Adorno et al.'s famous studies).
This chapter also discusses Erich Fromm's work post-Frankfurt School:
--Fromm on social neurosis
--Fromm on thoughts as a form of self-presentation or impression management
--Fromm's theoretical focus on self identity, rather than instincts
--Fromm's theory about personality traits
--Fromm on empiricism and psychology versus psychoanalysis

ABSTRACT: Before the introduction of the Western system of education into Africa (18th century), the aim of indigenous education was to preserve the cultural heritage of the family, the clan, and the larger groups. Indigenous education was meant for every member of the society because it was believed that every member of society had a role to play in educating the child, thus the proverb “It takes a village to raise a child.” This paper addresses the philosophy of self-reliance as advocated by Julius Nyerere (1922-1999) when he became president of Tanzania in 1962. Nyerere was highly critical of the social, political, economic and cultural value system imposed on his country during the period of colonization, and he worked relentlessly to go back to the traditional African values. He believed that the Africans should decolonize their minds in order to accept themselves as Africans. He believed that the education system introduced by the British in 1900, when they colonized Tanzania, did not address the needs of the Tanzanian people, therefore Nyerere advocated for education that he believed was more culturally relevant. Nyerere’s philosophy of education has had a great impact on many African countries. This paper explores his educational philosophy of self-reliance and the impact of African Socialism on the African education system today. Furthermore, the paper critically discusses the reasons for the downfall of Nyerere while reemphasizing the power that educational ideas hold for transforming societies.

In spite of all the industrious efforts Peirce scholars have made so far, Peirce's biography still retains a number of gaps, among which the problem of identity of Peirce's second wife, Juliette Froissy, stands out most significantly. It is all the more important that, as some scholars suggest, the discovery of
any reliable facts about Juliette could provide an explanation to some of the decisions Peirce had made, which irrevocably changed the course of his life, as well as his theory. By courtesy of Professor Dr. Nathan Houser and the Peirce Edition Project, the writer of the present paper was granted access to the archive materials containing the Max H. Fisch – Maurice Auger correspondence and Victor Lenzen's notes on Juliette. The paper aims at arranging the dispersed data obtained from these and other sources into a set of several distinct versions, which curiously refer to each other and collectively impose a certain order on some major abductions concerning Juliette's identity.

In contrast to other gay-affirmative writing on Sullivan, my reading attends to Perry's ciations of Irish-American identity and Catholic upbringing in the presentation of both Sullivan and his aunt Margaret Stack as lonely, loveless, Irish heterosexuals, a preseatnation which obscures these gay and lesbian lives. I conclude with an anti-essentialist argument drawn from Sullivan's own writings to avoid essentialist readings of the relationship between his life's events and the meaning of his works.

Consistent with this view, young men in Study 1 (n= 90) identified more with derogatory quotes about women drawn from recent lads’ mags, and from interviews with convicted rapists, when those quotes were attributed to lads’ mags, than when they were attributed to convicted rapists. In Study 2, 40 young women and men could not reliably judge the source of those same quotes. While these participants sometimes voiced the belief that the content of lads’ mags was ‘normal’ while rapists’ talk was ‘extreme’, they categorized quotes from both sources as derogatory with equal frequency. Jointly, the two studies show an overlap in the content of convicted rapists’ talk and the contents of contemporary lads’ mags, and suggest that the framing of such content within lads’ mags may normalize it for young men.

This thesis examines the articles of surrender signed to conclude the Williamite war in Ireland, and the ways in which they were implemented, ignored or repudiated during the reign of William III. The articles of surrender were negotiated and signed at Drogheda, Waterford, Galway, Inis Boffin, Sligo and Limerick between July 1690 and October 1691. Chapters II to III consider lobbying by the ‘articlemen’ (as the claimants were known) for the ratification and implementation of the articles by the Irish and English authorities. Royal, official and parliamentary interpretations of the articles are examined, as is opposition to the articles by Irish Protestants. Legislative measures, both failed and enacted, relating to the articles are considered, as are the consequences of this legislation for Irish Catholics.
Chapters IV to VIII are a case study of an articleman, Colonel John Browne of Westport, and the articles of Limerick. Browne was the beneficiary of Limerick’s article 13, which proved highly contentious during the 1690s. Several topics are considered in this case study: Browne’s position as a ‘new interest’ landowner (i.e. a Catholic who had acquired an interest in the Restoration land settlement); his supply of ordnance and provisions to the Jacobite army, and the debts he incurred; the negotiation and implementation of article 13 of Limerick, which provided for the payment by Catholic landowners of part of Browne’s debts; aspects of a landowner’s finances in the late seventeenth century, including large-scale land sales to pay debts; the promotion of private acts of parliament; and alleged Jacobite activity by Browne and other notable articlemen. Several prominent former Irish Jacobites, also members of the ‘new interest’, who elected to remain in Ireland are also considered.

The study of Henry Burnay’s fortune and patrimony, after his post mortem inventory, intends to address the definition of typologies at Lisbon’s highest fortunes during the second half of the nineteenth century, with special attention to the relationship between the state’s businesses and private initiative and to the patrimonial differentiation set by the distinct investment strategies. The analysis of Henry Burnay’s business life and remarkable fortune, on which Henry Burnay & Co. is founded, leads us into the comparison with profiles derived from participation in the opportunities guaranteed by the liberal state and by the commercial activity.
