Abstract: English and Catalan
News media contribute to gender inequality, although already from the 1970s onwards, together with the raise of second wave women’s movement, gender equality has been claimed on the agenda through directives and recommendations for news media by the UNESCO in 1979, the Council of Europe in 1985 and at the United Nations 4th Women’s World Conference at Beijing in 1995. News media participate in “doing gender” by the recognition or misrecognition of a realistic image of women in the news reportage, in addition underrepresentation of women through media is to be seen as a form of symbolic violence. Thus, the trajectory lines of (under)representation of women in the news coverage from the 1970s to the 2000 will be reflected on a global level, discussing the results of the four Global Media Monitoring Projects from 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010; as well as on a more regional level studies on women’s presence in the news in Germany and Austria.
Resum:

Towards Cosmopolitan Security Politics? Analysis of Public Discourse on Neutrality in Austria and Ireland

After presenting the idea of cosmopolitan security, neutrality is approached theoretically though the constructivist logic, and its compatibility with the cosmopolitan vision of international politics is discussed. In the empirical part, the main trends in the public discourse on neutrality in two neutral states – Austria and Ireland – are analysed, using discursive methodology. Based on this analysis, the paper concludes that while neutrality has been reconceptualised and narrowed down, it is still perceived as an important principle of national security policy. At the domestic level, neutrality is still understood rather in the traditional context and thus, it is difficult to follow it in the current security environment and apply it to contemporary ‘wars’.

Until recently, regional labour market imbalances were considered transitory phenomena, a consequence of state failure in generating distorted investment incentives in depressed regions as well as of excessive labour market rigidities. Labour mobility and wage flexibility were at the core of the debate over the causes of and cures for regional labour market imbalances. This book bears witness to the changed perspective of research on these issues. In the recent literature, internal labour migration is depicted as a cause of further divergence between advanced and backward regions, as higher returns on human and physical capital are expected to be paid in those regions where these factors are already concentrated.
The book contributes to the debate by presenting important new findings on: a) the reasons why structural change in some sectors causes a slump in some regions, but not in others; b) the extent to which poverty traps explain regional imbalances as compared to such other alternative factors as spatial dependence and nonlinearity in growth behaviour; c) the degree of convergence across EU countries and regions; d) the role of labour mobility in reducing/increasing regional labour market imbalances, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe; e) and the role of an active labour market policy and child care facilities in alleviating the hardship of the weakest segments of the population.

Seen by:Reliability vs. Authority: Difficulties Within Practices of Credibility Assessment of Information by Highschool Students and Teachers in Austria
Short paper presented at the IAMCR Conference “Communication and Citizenship”, Braga, Portugal, 18-22 July 2010

However, schools – at least in Austria – still do not provide an adequate framework for children to aquire the respective skills. Moreover, the structural and cultural context of school and the respective practices of teachers even seem to conflict with the aim to make children digitally literate, as indicated by our qualitative study in Austrian schools. The project systematically asked for the terms, forms and consequences of Internet use in schools and for school-related tasks as well as the impact of the school on Internet practices of teens, especially the development of competences for information research and information processing.
