Emotional intelligence has been highly correlated with health, positive relationships, and pro-social behavior: Is this true for professional athletes? If so, these skills could be a key to help professional athletes overcome a range of challenges. This study assesses 30 retired NFL players with a survey on life success (including good health and relationships, avoiding drug/alcohol use and violence, doing well at work, and creating a high quality of life) and an emotional intelligence assessment. Over 60% in the variation of the life success factors are predicted by emotional intelligence scores. Athletes with greater emotional intelligence are likely to be more successful in life.

Far from being the ‘outsider’ depicted in Chariots of Fire, however, Abrahams’ ‘Anglicisation’ was extensive and played an important role in his life before, during and after his athletics career. This article will show that this film falsely portrays Abrahams as a victim of powerful anti-Semitism and that detailed historical analysis shows instead that his integration went hand-in-hand with his sporting success – something which was celebrated by British Jewry. Such was his assimilation, that by 1936 – a year when Abrahams courted controversy over his stance on the Berlin Olympics – he was criticised for having ‘lost’ all attachment to the community of his birth. As will be shown, in contrast to the film, where Abrahams is seen to be ‘too Semitic’, the Bedford athlete was actually ‘thoroughly Anglicised’. A desire to move into or support middle-to-upper class British society characterised Abrahams personal and sporting life much more so than his Jewishness. As time progressed, Abrahams’ Jewish origins meant less and less, both to Harold himself and to those around him.

This paper examines the tension between profit and prestige maximizing behavior that occurs
when universities change athletic conferences. The researcher compared 60 academic, demographic, and financial measures for NCAA Division I institutions and conferences that changed membership in 2010. Membership changes involve a bi-directional agreement between current conference members and newly invited institutions. This reciprocal requirement creates
a maximizing-satisficing paradox which forces conferences members to sacrifice peer group prestige for financial gain or athletic success.

All participants reported either lasting attitude or behavior changes; most reported both. Participants reported increased understanding of how rape might feel and attributed this change to seeing a videotape describing a male-on-male rape situation. Participants refrained from telling jokes about rape and reported feeling more effective when helping survivors seeking assistance. These behavior changes were attributed to the videotape and to a section of the program encouraging participants to confront rape jokes and challenge sexist behaviors.

The purpose of this qualitative inquiry was to determine
fraternity men and student athletes’ perceptions of a commonly
used rape-prevention program. Participants saw
“The Men’s Program” and then participated in 60–90
minute focus groups assessing whether their attitudes and
behavior would change, what about the program led to
that change, and what improvements they recommended.
After seeing this peer education program that included a
video describing a male-on-male rape experience, participants
reported increased empathy with rape survivors, an
increased ability to help survivors recover, and several
areas where they planned to change their behavior. Areas
of planned change included behavior in intimate encounters
and responding to survivors by believing their stories.
Participants suggested a stronger emphasis on alcohol and consent and a less intense plea to help change social
norms. Several implications for student affairs generalists
and rape prevention programmers are discussed.
