When the camera became a domestic consumer good, photography was adapted to the needs of private production and reception (Slater, 1991: 50). The family archive contains images of selfportrayal, whose form is oriented towards established patterns, like cartes-de-visite, since they are received privately as well as in a quasi-public area (wallet, desk in an office etc.).
Family photography gains its performative character by means of its phatic function (Malinowski, 1923/1949: 315-7), inscribed in a historical and socio-cultural frame (Hirsch, M. 1997: 10-2). It actuates in the border between naivety and formality, and these Memory-Pictures (Keppler, 1994: 187) create an impression of reliability and authenticity by their ritualized reception.
The storage in a family archive and the perfomativity of its reception oscillate between the paradigm of scripture and the regime of narration (Langford, 2006: 227). The characterization of the media category ‘family photography’ by means of the phatic function of communication, and the identification of suitable tools for the analysis, are the topics of this article.

In Web 2.0, there is a social dichotomy at work based upon and reflecting the
underlying Von Neumann Architecture of computers. In the hegemonic Web 2.0
business model, users are encouraged to process digital ephemera by sharing content,
making connections, ranking cultural artifacts, and producing digital content, a mode
of computing I call ‘affective processing.’ The Web 2.0 business model imagines users
to be a potential superprocessor. In contrast, the memory possibilities of computers
are typically commanded by Web 2.0 site owners. They seek to surveil every user
action, store the resulting data, protect that data via intellectual property, and mine
it for profit. Users are less likely to wield control over these archives. These archives
are comprised of the products of affective processing; they are archives of affect, sites
of decontextualized data which can be rearranged by the site owners to construct
knowledge about Web 2.0 users.
YouTube as archive: Who will curate this digital Wunderkammer?

However, I argue that, despite these seemingly democratic features, YouTube is better understood not as opposed to traditional corporate media but in the same genealogy as previous archival technologies and techniques. In archives, all content is flattened and has equal weight, so it is up to a curatorial authority to present content to audiences. While YouTube promises to democratize media, its lack of a centralized `curator of display' actually sets the stage for large media companies and entrepreneurs to step into the curatorial role and decide how each object in YouTube's archives will be presented to users. The role of the curator of display is, as of this writing, unresolved. This article thus draws on political economic and historical critiques of collections and archives in order to connect the emergent technologies in YouTube with earlier attempts to organize and present information, objects and images.

All too often, the archival community is only a passive actor in an area where it should be fiercely pro-active. This article aims to show archivists how they can build on the trust they have and avoid many of the problems that have plagued the archival community in recent years, problems that run the risk of irrevocably damaging the profession’s reputation.

Instead, the Archives used the request as an opportunity to work more closely with that donor, recognizing that what the donor really wanted was enhanced access. Out of this potentially difficult situation came the creation of a new student internship program, one which has received widespread positive publicity for its work in creating biographies of alumni veterans who perished in service to their country. These biographies will eventually serve as the foundation for a website that will provide the access that the donor desires. This new form of outreach has also benefitted the Archives by raising its profile on campus.
