In the annual bulletin of Aquileia Archaeological Group of 2005, among the scientifici papers is a short essay on one of the most interesting but not so studied sites in the urban area of Udine: the medieval “tavella Sancti Petri”, chosen for the initial local settlement of the Carmelites (they later moved inside the city walls and thus started the events of the parish of Our Lady of Mount Caramel); then site of the Moretti-Facchini cottage who was also well known as a ‘mine’ of Roman archaeological finds; at last - unfortunately - shattered by a recent lotting.

Working with existing buildings, repairing and restoring them for continued use has become a creative and fascinating challenge within the architectural discipline. The process of wholeheartedly altering a building is often called ‘adaptive reuse’. In contemporary conservation theory and practice, adaptive reuse is considered an important strategy towards conservation of cultural heritage. An extensive review of scholarly literature on adaptive reuse from 1970’s onwards, shows that its body of theory is largely based on case study research and not, as one would expect, on architectural theory and/or conservation history.
This contribution, therefore aims to presents a critical analysis of 19th and 20th century theories on adaptive reuse. The theoretical discussion on adaptive reuse as a way to preserve historic monuments started in the 19th century when Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879) argued that ‘le meilleur moyen pour conserver une édifice, c'est de lui trouver une destination, et de satisfaire si bien à tous les besoins que commande cette destination, qu'il n'y ait pas lieu d'y faire des changements’ (Viollet-le-Duc, 1967 [1854]). His opponents John Ruskin (1819-1900) and William Morris (1834-1896), however, found it impossible to reintegrate in a monument any function beside the original one as it would destroy the authenticity of the building. We also describe – for the first time from the reuse-perspective – how these opposing theories were approached by Alois Riegl (1858-1905)’s concept of use- value and Camillo Boito (1836-1914)’s discourse on the formal architectural relationship between old and new.
Finally, we discuss how during the second half of the 20th century, adaptive reuse is emancipating to become a proper discipline within the broader field of architectural conservation.

Post-faction to the volume “Spazi del fare / Območja tradicionalnih dejavnosti” (that is: "Spaces of Making"), catalogue of the exhibition that illustrated the main historical-architectonic buildings built for productive purposes that were considered in the European project "The places of production and technological innovation in the thematic tourism": to conclude the book, this essay sums up the main categories, continuing and widening the analysis developed for the exhibition. The main research questions are then re-discussed, stimulating scholars, administrators and common people to re-appraise, re-use and re-invent this historical heritage, perishable beyond all appearance: because it is urgent to saving those “things” that today must be considered as rarities, possibly making them available for a thematic cultural tourism, as it is already done in other parts of Europe.

The church of S. Paolo near Peltuinum (AQ) has been chosen
as case study to test the SiArch, i.e. the rchitectonical lnformative System studied by the Research Unit of L'Aquila University. Before the earthquake of ApriI 6th 2009, happened
during the research period, the building was surveyed using digitaI photogrammetry techniques by PhotoModeler Scanner

with laser scanner. About architectonical surveying, according
to the used instruments, digitaI photogrammetry techniques
are simpler, faster and more economie, but surfaces built by photogrammetric point clouds are satisfying only for flat façades or with regular curvature, and elements with limited

3D photorealistic model. To build an Architectonical Informative
System, the first step is planning the database, that required
to compose 3D model according to constructive elements. Then the 3D model, textured by Autodesk 3DStudioMax 20 1Oand exported in *.3ds format, is imported in ArcScene
of ESRI ArcView 9.3 software. This procedure gives the
possibility to realize an architectonical informative system with
photorealistic 3D model into GIS environment. Moreover another
testing is about the importation of churciis mesh textured
surface, realized by digitaI photogrammetry techniques,
into ESRI GIS environment.

Case-studies of the research are the churches of S. Giustino in Paganica (XII-XV-XVIII-XX centuries) and of S. Paolo in Peltuinum (XII-Xlii-XVIII centuries): theyare medieval buildings, characterized by stratification phenomena, and during the twentieth centu ry modified by stilisti restorations, to bring them back to presumable originaI asset. They have been surveyed with integrated method. 3D-models describes architectonic characteristics such as geometric-dimensional, spatial, historical, metrologic-proportional ones; models give the possibility to visualize building's constructive phases end, mapped with photographical images, allow to represent materials, colou rs and constructive aspects. DigitaI photogrammetry, used according to an inverse camera process, givesthe possibility to reconstruct, by archival photos disappeared spatial and architectonical configurations. The 3D models can be instruments to interrelate and analyse in forma tions: in this way 3D models are data base. This kind of 3D model requires a plan ning according to digitaI components organization and layers stratification: this is fundamental far themodel's capability to collect data, be managed and interrogated. So 3D models are disarranged according to constructive elements; a database model in CAD environment is built by iperlinking model's elements to a data management matrix

The research group of L’Aquila University defined a procedure to create an architectonical Information System called SIArch-
Univaq. This information system can be integrated with “Risk Map” Italian database. The SIArch-Univaq is based on importation of architectonical three-dimensional photorealistic models in GIS environment. 3D models are realised according to building constructive elements, derived by a critical architectonic surveying; the importation of models into GIS allows the interrogation of the constructive elements (i.e. beam, window, door, etc.): this favour the knowledge of the architectonical heritage, indispensable requirement to plan processes of restoration, maintenance and management

The earthquake of 6 April 2009 has hit hard the old town of Aquila, which in its 168 hectares cover a highly valuable architectural and artistic heritage. The damage is significant but not enough to have affected the recognition of cultural historical and architectural identity. After the emergency protection phase, through a systematic buildings shoring process, still in progress, has to follow the recognition of historical and architectural values to protect, even residual, and, at the end, the restoration of each architecture and of the old city centre as a whole. The present phase of the reconstruction’s long process shows a strong debate on issues concerning legal means, procedures, of intervention methods for the restoration and for the definition of a new social identity of the old city center. It is an absolutely new experience for the Italian architectural culture because of its quality/quantitative peculiar characteristics. This paper is intended to provide, through appropriate analysis tools, a critical framework of the complex issues involved, and of the arising cultural and disciplinary debate.
Mostly there is the need to oppose to the keyword "as it as-where it was", the responsible restoration culture. A project that aims, respecting the specificity of each architecture, unavoidably concerns how to proceed looking for a right balance between the needs for mitigation of seismic risk (firmitas) and new functions (utilitas), and reintegration of architectural formal and figurative values (venustas), together with the preservation of the historical authenticity of the testimony.

Ignazio Carlo Gavini (1931), obseres - in some buildings of the city of L'Aquila and of the surrounding tertitory - the use of a particular constructive technique for the realization of stone masonries, calling it the "apparecchio
aquilano" (Masonry System of L'Aquila). This technique is characterized by a face realized in little stony ashlars, placed in staggered horizontal courses. The apparecchio quilano morphologically recalls the Roman opus reticulatum and the opus vittatum, and its reintroduction might be due to the Benedictine culture.
The presence of some ashlars in a vertical position, recalls an influence of some constructive manners typical of the Cistercian architecture , that are visible as well on the edge disposition of some elements or like in the opus spicatum. A wide research has consented to verify that the apparecchio aquilano is diffused in all the southern slope of the Gran Sasso massif, even with different, in part, from the examples of the chief town, in dimensions and in workmanship of the stony elements. The classification of the constructive techniques of the proposed masonries allows to correlate the analysed masonries with their historical-territorial context, and to compare the various constructive types with the documented data. In the light of the available data, the typologies in regular ashlars are present from the XIIth Century to the XVth Century; while the examples with little ashlars from the XIth Century to the XV Century.

The survey of the duble vaults of this church, related to stability check of building roof structures, explains as application of new tecnology to architectural survey needs a change in working way, either in integration between direct and indirect survey operations, or in their drawing restitution. The case upsets architecture immobility prejudice. Upon this postulate lay architectural surwey and drawing: indeed the first serch a confirmation of its accuracy in plants superimposition, theother refers to movement as observer property.
Without laser-scan, strumental survey allowed threedimensional check of wall structures, showing deformation in vaults, due to wall arragement. Geomertical irregularity and plants translation, put in evidence by sections superimposition, weren’t due to survey errors, but were the conseguence of several building movements. Different movement range of architectural elements and relation with other, still in their original position, let us know succession in structures movement since geometrical vault deformation. This last was determidend trough survey of significant points and geometrical study on virtual model.
Eventually, such as survey spatial restitution let us know movement and structures geometry loss, virtual modelling and let us show and explain these facts, but in survey, real potentiality in informatic struments is lied to its utility in the studying of architecture forms.

The contribution made wants to introduce the work conducted by the research team of the Second University of Naples, Faculty of Architecture; Luigi Vanvitelli; related with the Regional Centre of Competence; Benecon; the confluence of energies and wisdom of over 250 professional teachers in five of the seven universities of Campania. The case studies identified for the occasion is given by the detailed study of a complex artifact - object substantially recently that goes back almost eighty years
ago - an expression, however, a traditional technical knowledge which has been largely lost to memory, because of the urgent conservation needs, it must first be studied, it has to be able to
facilitate disassembly and is able to document the correct methods of action in response to the inherent complexity of the diagnosis reported deteriorated. The methodological work conducted, starts from the consideration that the caisson in the Great Hall of the former Faculty of Economics, University “Federico II” of Naples, Via Partenope, works like the entire building architect Roberto Pane, noted architectural historian and theorist of the above restoration is, in itself, not only of a
material document type as an interior decoration, again, an explicit expression of know-how which are very few foothold cultural points to be able to decode the constructive wisdom in the manner of execution. Peculiar step about it, regardless of the survey program of the functional protocol side interventions, such as, for example, the reading of trees, of course, implied the same research, remains the conceptual definition of the conservative instrument, the relevant material text examined without removing it from the place of original location, relevant, also, its historicized image and historical events that have affected the building. Non-invasive investigations, then, without practice a minimum hole from scratch in order to videoendoscopy inspection, drawing it, the many discrepancies between the axles or the posting of a ride.
