Archaeogeography : a project of archaeology of the geohistorical knowledge.
Archaeogeography is a discipline which takes more and more importance since about ten years within the disciplines studying the relation between the societies and their territories, in a long-lasting perspective. This article aims to present and put in perspective its history, its matter and its place in the movement of emergence of a vast research field on the organization of the lands and its dynamics. Lastly, it is the occasion to introduce the papers of this file which illustrate each one an aspect of current archeogeographic research.

The medieval agrarian colonisation in Alentejo (Portugal).
The aim of this paper is to highlight the agrarian planned morphologies during the Middle Ages. The author takes the example of Alentejo, in southern Portugal. There, History offers an ideal context for the analysis of these forms because of the Reconquista and of the process of Repoblación. The historians have studied well the phenomenon of allocation and of redistribution of the parcels of land which takes place within the context of agrarian colonization. But they did not analyze the forms of the parcels which follow from it. This paper, following three ways of research – historical, epistemological and archeogeographical –, shows all the potential of such a subject and contributes to recognize the medieval agrarian planned morphology in a country where it is ignored.

The radio-squarred form of the non planned countries
Most plots in French villages fit into in a radial pattern of
squares, which associates a network of roads polarized by
a village habitat with auto-organized and inherited plots of
land, usually in a pattern of squares. This modelization,
based on several observations, forces us to critically review
the opinions formulated by historians about how medieval
space was organized. The village territory was not
“radial-concentric”, and it did not clearly emerge during the
polarization and “birth” of villages. When they exist, radial
or concentric forms did not organize big areas, and they can
always be set down to necessities. The phrase “radial
concentric” is misleading, and applying this pattern to
French villages is reductionist in relation to a much richer
and more moving geographical reality.

About the "birth of the village during the Middle Ages" : the end of a paradigm
In France, since the beginning of the 1980's, researches on the medieval rural settlement have been conducted by a theory on the origins of our villages by Robert Fossier. The villages would appear around the beginning of the eleventh century and would fix them durably in the soils, around the church and/or the castle. This theory - forged at one time when it made possible to advance the reflexion on the relations between the seigniories and the habitat - can be today revalued thanks to the archaeological data brought by the preventive excavations.

The bocage : an agrarian landscape which poses problems for archaeologists and medievists.
Since Marc Bloch, the bocage is one part in France’s traditional
“landscape trilogy”. Though recent, it is considered
to be essential for studying the history of the land in western
France. Current results from archeogeography and preventive
archeology are modifying this view. By
distinguishing between planes and modeled forms, between
the different scales used, archeogeographers have separated
the parcelization of the land from the creation of a landscape
demarcated with hedgerows. They have discovered
that the underlying morphology usually originated in a selforganized,
resilient network, which we cannot consider to
be a “type” during the Middle Ages. We must reject a
linear vision and focus on the process of parcelization as
it fits onto a society’s space-time continuum.

Archeogeography of the Southern Vendee plain.
The archaeological data collected since ten years on the plain of Southern
Vendée show that this space knew a dense occupation as of the Gallic
period. The archeogeographic analysis allows to put all these sites in
network and, thus, to contribute to the recent renewal of research on the
history of the agrarian planimetry. It shows indeed that the large network of
forms that dominates the plain experienced an important evolution phase
during the second Iron Age. According to the dynamical methods, this
network is characterized by a remarkable durability. It is also found to be
associated to forms of other levels, leading to the creation of hybrid
morphological configurations such as the “radio-squared” forms.

The dynamics of plots and roadway network in the Southern Vendée. Historiographical studies and archaeogeographical research.
This PhD thesis addresses three principal issues. The first one is a historiographical investigation of the bocage, the medieval habitat and plots and the landscapes of Vendée (France) in order to identify the dead ends and the possible ways of reforming the associated scientific speeches. The second is an archaeogeographical analysis on several space and time scales of the planimetric forms (the roadway network, the plots, the habitat network) in an area of 800 km² in Southern Vendée. The objective is to understand their organization, installation and transmission over a large time scale, according to the paradigm of the dynamics and the complexity of the processes. Lastly, the third research attempts to point out the possible relationships between the plot pattern, the roadway network and the settlement from the Protohistory until our days in order to provide an attempt to reform the geohistorical classical account.
