As to do so, we assume that a) the agricultural development in the oasis supported on arboreal gathering, was the main stimulus that propitiated social and productive complexity, with occupations extending back to moments previous to Toconao Phase; and b) the existence of diverse occupations and resources stimulated the development of caravan practices through different mechanisms based on ancient complementary interactions characteristic of South Central Andes. These ideas arise as a necessity for understanding the Formative process of the Salar and the Loa river basins, which should take into account San Pedro's oasis role in the origins and development of social and productive complexity, as well as its sociopolitical integration in articulating different Circumpuna territories.

While conducting these projects, the researchers where interested in presenting to the community of Quillagua what archaeological research is all about beyond the scientific audience. This experience continues a line of work –which has been conducted for several years in the Upper Loa region– emphasises to maintain a fluid relationship between archaeologists and local communities. This relationship has led the communities to report cases of looting and destruction of archaeological sites, thus allowing to protect more effectively the cultural heritage of the region.

Pike-fishing in the Adige valley: a research between archaeology and ethnography
Among the archaeological research projects concerning the Adige Valley, the one regarding the site Galgenbühel/Dos de
la Forca (Salurn/Salorno, South Tyrol) focuses not only on material culture to establish the chronological and cultural
framework, but also on the reconstruction of palaeo-environment and on the investigation of site-function and economy
of the human groups which repeatedly, from 8400 to 7500 BC, frequented the site. Excavations have pointed out an
economic context related first of all to the exploitation of the wetland in the valley bottom. According to the great quantity
of fish remains the inhabitants of the rockshelter practised systematic fishing. Furthermore, in the upper levels of the
stratigraphy, they specialized in catching almost exclusively Pikes. Lacking evidence for tools related unequivocally to the
capture of Pikes, we put forward different hypothesis regarding possible fishing techniques. Some of them were commonly
used up to the present, as for instance the lace with the slip-knot. A historical-ethnographic research concerning fishing
techniques, conservation, consumption and commercialization of Pike has been undertaken, with the aim to investigate the
know-how of traditional communities in order to get useful data for the archaeological interpretation. The research was
carried out among the old fishermen of the Adige Valley which were active between the 1930s and the 1960s.
