Left-wing politicians and personalities were said to have 'demonized' Fortuyn, and to have incited hatred. I think this is totally misplaced and unjustified. Maybe here and there people tended to typify too much, which is always regrettable. But the same thing happens the other way around. Fierce accusations and descriptions, after all, go hand in hand with great contradictions in politics and morality.

The attributes of tripedal animals encompass the sun and divine power (‘sanzuwu,’ the East Asian crow), the moon and earthly riches (‘chan chu,’ the Chinese money toad), the male sexual principle (Mycenaean bull, and perhaps Malian stallion), toys for children (Saharan terracotta figurines), and even sacrifice and death (Mycenaean bull, Danish ‘helhest’ or ghost-horse, and Malian terracottas from funeral chambers). This fully illustrated research essay constitutes an original synthesis of topics that previously have only been considered in isolation.

El ensayo explora la teoría antropológica de Tim Ingold rastreando sus referencias a la obra de Merleau-Ponty y el concepto de interanimalidad/interagentividad. Expone algunas ideas de la “poética del habitar” que Ingold destaca de etnografías de pueblos cazadores-recolectores y cómo estas ideas se engarzan a una consideración ontológica que no disocia organismo y persona, cuerpo y mente, naturaleza y cultura, animalidad y humanidad. Se revisa la literatura sobre animales en la filosofía de Merleau-Ponty, la crítica de Ingold a la “Antropología de los sentidos”. Se dan indicios de las implicaciones éticas y políticas de esta ontología y antropología.

ONTOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY OF INTERANIMALITY: MERLEAU-PONTY FROM TIM INGOLD’S PERSPECTIVE

Abstract
This essay explores Tim Ingold’s anthropological theory following his references to Merleau-Ponty and the concept of interanimality/interagentivity. It poses some ideas of Ingold’s "poetics of dwelling", which he highlights from ethnographies of hunter-gatherer peoples, and how these ideas are linked to an ontological consideration which does not dissociate body and
person, body and mind, nature and culture, animality and humanity. The paper reviews literature on animals in Merleau-Ponty's philosophy, and Ingold's critique of "Anthropology of
the senses". It also gives critical clues for the ethical and political implications of this ontology.

Resumen: Expongo la actual discusión sobre el reconocimiento de derechos básicos (humanos) a otros animales al hilo de... more Resumen: Expongo la actual discusión sobre el reconocimiento de derechos básicos (humanos) a otros animales al hilo de dos textos donde el diálogo es importante: Adela Cortina, Las fronteras de la persona (2009) y Paola Cavalieri, La muerte del animal (2009). Reviso las nociones de derechos, dignidad humana, especismo, anti-especismo, humanismo y post-humanismo. La experiencia adquirida tras la campaña internacional por la erradicación de la modificación genital femenina es útil para modular la estrategia de los derechos de animales. Ésta no debe descartarse, pues es el necesario contrapunto para cuestionar jerarquías establecidas, pero tampoco debe aplicarse de manera ciega y sorda, desatendiendo los contextos y los significados sociales que puedan tener prácticas calificadas de inaceptables por algunas personas.

Abstract: I explore the current state of the discussion about the recognition of basic (human) rights to other animals, citing two books where dialogue is important: Adela Cortina, The boundaries of the person (2009) and Paola Cavalieri, The death of the animal (2009). I review the notions of rights, human dignity, specism, anti-specism, humanism and post-humanism. The experience gained after the international campaign to eradicate female genital modification is useful in order to modulate the (animal) rights strategy. This strategy should not be discarded, as it is a much needed tool to question established hierarchies, but neither should be applied in a blindly manner, ignoring the contexts and social meanings that some practices may have, even if these practices are unacceptable for some people.
