Although the main aim is the analysis of stratified collection excavated in 2007, the most important finds from the surface collection are included in analysis. The well excavated and wet-sieved sunken settlement feature yielded a collection of earlier Moravian Painted Ware Culture pottery fragments supplemented by a collection of stone industry, both chipped, polished, and osteological material. The charcoal sample from filling of settlement sunken feature yielded an absolute date, which allows a comparison with other sites from the same time-span within the Middle Danube Region
The Animal Bones of Berwick Field, Winchester A partial assemblage from thirteen pits

Though excavated in 1989, the Iron Age site of Berwick Field, northwest of Winchester, England, has yet to be analysed in full, and therefore there is no published information for the site available at this time. All finds are currently being curated at the Winchester City Council Museums Service, which lent to this study the faunal contents from 13 pits. The pits chosen for examination were those determined to have, cumulatively, a sufficient amount of material that could be examined within the time constraints of this particular study. The pits were dated previously, according to their ceramic content, to the Middle Iron Age. The faunal contents, already cleaned and bagged separately by context, were identified and catalogued by the writer.
The partial assemblage, a total of 5,565 bones and fragments from at least 15 species, was in good condition with a high rate of species identification. The assemblage yielded enough information to compare data to that of similar Iron Age sites in southern England. The findings from these contemporary sites were used as a comparison for the pits at Berwick Field in order to gain an understanding of their contents, as well as determining what cultural significance the contents convey. Such cultural significances include evidence of the varied types of exploitation of domestic animal species, as well as the often-discussed ‘special animal deposits’.
The analysis of the data concluded from this partial assemblage will present the commencement of the interpretation and understanding of the Middle Iron Age agricultural community at Berwick Field and the treatment there of animals both domestic and wild. In addition, this report will serve as an exercise in identification and analytical reporting based on skills attained as a Masters student in Osteoarchaeology at the University of Southampton.

The site is a settlement located on the northern shore of Kuwait Bay. Radiocarbon dating, as well as distinctive pottery found at the site, confirms that the settlement dates to the late 6th/early 5th millennium BC. Domestic livestock exploited include sheep/goat and cattle. Hunting was carried out for gazelle, fox and marine turtle. Birds so far identified include cormorants. The numerous fish remains include requiem sharks, sawfish, sea catfish, groupers, jacks/trevallies, emperors, seabream and tuna. Most fishing was probably carried out in shallow waters adjacent to the site, although some larger jacks and groupers, and particularly the tuna, must have been caught in deeper offshore waters. A large number of sea catfish otoliths were recovered from the site. These are currently being studied by the authors in the Fish Ageing Laboratory of the Mariculture and Fisheries Department, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. Preliminary data suggest that the sea catfish were caught during both summer and winter months. Interestingly, some of their otoliths had been utilised as blanks for the manufacture of beads.

It traces a biography of the landscape from the later Mesolithic through to the Iron Age, a sequence that saw profound changes in the character, scale and temporality of occupation. Undertaken in advance of gravel extraction, the scale of the fieldwork reported here made it possibe to track not only the sequence of occupation, but also how prehistoric communities encountered, appropriated or ignored the 'archaeology' of their time. Set against sequences from across southern England, this work sheds important light on the relationship between local histories and broader processes, and on the complex and geographically varied ways in which the past itself was understood in the past.
