ertainly one cannot turn on the news without seeing a story about the feud over the Catholic Church’s stance on forbidding the use of contraception and Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) that mandates free contraception to women. In preparing this article, I took the time to review many articles from liberal and conservative news outlets, law professors who are experts on constitutional law, and statements from the USCCB and Bishops. Before asking questions, I want to outline the following points:
*In the literature reviewed, only two women, Sr. Carol Keehan and Sr. Mary Ann Walsh, made a statement against this policy stating that the government is interfering with the working of the Church. Most voices heard and shouting the loudest are members of the clergy.
*Hospitals considered “Catholic” hire people of all faiths and various beliefs. They also treat patients of all faiths. They are not exclusively “Catholic.”
*Catholic identified Colleges hire professors and staff that are not Catholic. Moreover, their student body is not totally Catholic.
*Catholic Charities, once again, hire non-Catholics.
* Insurance plans currently in place often offer contraception prescriptions at a zero to low co-pay price. These plans are in-force at many Catholic Institutions.
*Under HIPAA, healthcare of employees are protected and the Employer, even the Catholic Church cannot violate the privacy of the patient, even if it is an employee.
*Birth Control Pills are often prescribed for women with endometriosis or other “female” reproductive disorders and not birth control.
Women pregnant, carrying a dead baby, cannot have surgery due to risks are given medication to induce abortion are given

Justifying Belief within the Christian Identity Movement An Exercise in Memetics

These memes have been gathered by looking at conversion oriented texts of three diverse ministries that are commonly held to be members of the Christian Identity movement: Christogenea, The Ecclesiastical Council for the Restoration of Covenant Israel, and Mission to Israel. This paper traces the origins of the memes through primary texts of the Christian Identity movement and its direct ancestor, British Israelism, while addressing their utility within historical context. This paper will serve as a case-study in the value of claims about the past providing legitimacy and proof to fringe religious movements.

My reading has Emerson discovering a religiosity which does not depend on an adherence to a particular religious tradition or supernatural revelation. I call this religious self-reliance. Emerson, influenced by James Marsh and William Ellery Channing, rejects the theology which in part follows Locke’s empiricism and leaves the individual in need of spiritual guidance through traditional forms of divine Revelation. Instead, Emerson turns to Reason, identified as the moral or religious sentiment. The Over-soul which the moral sentiment uncovers represents the ultimate grounding of the self, and its revelation serves as the basis for religious self-reliance.

Building on debates in the sociology of knowledge, this chapter explores how the recent popularity of creationist ideas within contemporary western cultures may be explained with reference to social structural changes. A brief history of creationism within the twentieth century is followed by a discussion of how and why the claims associated with creationism are viewed as plausible by those who affirm them.
Evangelicalism and Capitalism in Transatlantic Context
by Mathew Guest
Politics and Religion, vol. 4, no. 2, Autumn 2010, pp. 257-279
This article is a critical engagement with political scientist William Connolly’s book Christianity and Capitalism:... more This article is a critical engagement with political scientist William Connolly’s book Christianity and Capitalism: American Style. Connolly’s analysis of the ways in which evangelical Christianity and capitalist agendas interrelate in the US context is outlined and critiqued in terms of its tendency to homogenise the US evangelical movement and overstate its incorporation of right wing political interests. Its theoretical framework is also critiqued, but developed in light of its potential to generate insights into the global context of evangelical influence, including as a vehicle for capitalist values. This is explored in terms of US influence upon British evangelicalism and what this reveals about the circulation of evangelical-capitalist ideas within a transatlantic context. A case study is offered of the Willow Creek sponsored Global Leadership Summit by way of illustration.
