Applications are invited for a tenurable academic position in Materials Engineering within the University of Adelaide’s School of Mechanical Engineering. You will be expected to play a key role in the School’s undergraduate teaching and research in Materials Engineering.

 

The School has an active materials research group with a wide range of interests and programs, an established metallurgical laboratory and access to excellent mechanical testing, electron optical and microanalysis facilities,. You will have a strong academic background in engineering materials, and  be able to work on projects currently underway in the recently established Energy Pipelines Cooperative Research Centre in collaboration  with members of the School’s academic staff.

 

In addition to undertaking research and teaching undergraduate courses in engineering materials, you will be required to:

 

  • supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects
  • undertake a limited amount of industrial consulting
  • be actively involved in professional bodies
  • assume responsibility for, and undertake administrative duties at School level.

 

Interaction with other disciplines, institutions and organisations will be encouraged.

 

You should have:

 

  • An engineering undergraduate degree in materials engineering, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar discipline and a PhD in one or more aspects of materials engineering.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective lecturing techniques and commitment to excellence in teaching materials engineering topics including materials  & manufacturing, composite materials, materials selection, failure analysis, welding or similar related subjects.
  • High levels of written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate students in research and encourage their intellectual development.
  • Knowledge of physical metallurgy of engineering materials including steel and aluminium alloys.  Knowledge of advanced electron microscopical techniques for materials characterization
  • An excellent publication record (relative to opportunity).
  • Well established and recognised research track record.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and constructively with other members of the School.
  • Potential to procure funding and develop research programs in appropriate areas of interest.
  • A commitment to collaborative research and consulting with government and industry.

Experience of working in steel industry and production of steel plates and pipes for pipeline industry would be a distinct advantage for the potential candidate.

 

 

Salary:

(Level B): $77,688- $92,256

(Level C) $95,163 - $109,735 per annum

Plus an employer superannuation contribution of 17% applies.

 

 

 

This continuing position is available from mid April 2012.
