The Barrett Honors College of Arizona State University seeks to expand its faculty and invites application for a faculty position in the natural sciences or mathematics. The faculty of Barrett is comprised of non-tenure track Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers, most on three-year renewable and rolling appointments. Each faculty member normally teaches three to four seminar classes of fewer than 20 students each semester. Most of these classes are sections of a first-year, two-semester interdisciplinary examination of important ideas from the earliest writing to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. Barrett Honors College students represent the top 8% of undergraduates at ASU, with average entering SATs of 1320 and over one-third of each class are National Scholars.
We seek to fill a full-time, multi-year faculty position whose primary responsibility will be to teach the first-year seminar. Successful applicants will demonstrate experience and openness to teaching a variety of texts using multiple theoretical/disciplinary/methodological approaches. The position begins August 2012; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.
Qualifications: A PhD in any field of the natural sciences or mathematics that complements the academic focus of the existing faculty members. Candidates whose work integrates views from multiple areas of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and/or the humanities (e.g. historians of science) are encouraged to apply as well. Experience in leading discussion seminars and/or teaching argumentative writing skills is required.
Application: Please send: (1) a letter of application detailing teaching philosophy and experience, disciplinary training and research, and how your discipline can contribute to honors education, (2) a C.V., (3) a sample syllabus for the second semester of The Human Event, (Barrett's first-year seminar), taught from the natural science perspective. Sample syllabi for this class, HON 273, can be found under faculty profiles on the college website (http://barretthonors.asu.edu/contact-us/faculty-directory/). Send your application materials to: Faculty Search Committee, The Barrett Honors College, Arizona State University, P.O. Box 871612, Tempe AZ 85287-1612 or electronically to laura.popova@asu.edu. Questions about the position may be addressed to: Dr. Laura Popova, Chair, Faculty Search Committee, at the same address.
