The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee's Peck School of the Arts is seeking applicants for the position of Director of Inova (Institute of Visual Arts) Galleries.
This full-time, multi-year, twelve month academic staff appointment requires a motivated and dynamic individual, whose areas of expertise include demonstrated experience in arts fundraising and development, contemporary curatorial practices, non-profit gallery management,and community outreach, as well as a thorough working knowledge of contemporary art and the operational demands of directing a research institution gallery space.
The Director will be expected to:
Lead and support an exhibition programming schedule of the highest quality, that contributes productively to PSOA program needs for students and faculty, while also capturing the interest and critical engagement of alumni and Milwaukee's arts community.
Coordinate exhibitions, activities, curricular programming and events with Inova's Associate Director and with faculty and students in the Peck School of the Arts -- Departments of Art and Design and Film.
Curate some exhibitions and facilitate the design of other exhibitions and projects.
Provide points of connection and collaboration across schools and departments on the UWM campus and with peer institutions around the country.
Organize and provide direction for future exhibitions, publications, programs and educational outreach.
Originate contracts and serve as the liaison between the artist (or artist's studio) and the Inova Galleries.
Evaluate scheduling demands to maintain programming and resource goals.
Expand on established relationships and forge new relationships with PSOA faculty, staff, alumni and students, the UWM campus and the Milwaukee regional arts community.
Initiate a successful fundraising operation and seek sponsorships, grants, contracts and gifts to support Inova's programming needs.
Work closely with the Associate Director in the management and direction of Inova operations.
Create and manage an Advisory Board.
Coordinate marketing with PSOA staff.
Utilizing best business and fiscal practices and current methods in gallery management, serve in supervisory capacity for gallery operations.
Periodically teach a course in area of specialization.
Participate regularly in PSOA and campus operational management activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline.
A successful record in the planning and administration of gallery programs and an understanding of best practices.
Knowledge of the art world and its key players.
Ability to select and evaluate works of art.
Direct experience in fundraising.
Grant writing experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline.
College gallery experience.
Budget management experience.
Experience curating exhibitions.
Supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to recruit, lead, organize and support a small professional staff and volunteers.
PR and marketing experience.
Effective communication skills.
Experience editing and writing, including catalog essays.
