Se dice que vivimos en la “era de las imágenes”, y está claro que las imágenes son importantes en nuestra cultura. Mitchell ha afirmado que “el problema del siglo XXI es el problema de la imagen”. Dada la importancia de las imágenes, disponer de un conocimiento solvente acerca de ellas es también importante. Pero cuando revisamos la literatura contemporánea comprobamos que muchos expertos se muestran insatisfechos ante el estado del conocimiento sobre las imágenes.

Este descontento se hace patente en llamamientos como el de Elkins, que denunciando la arbitrariedad de los criterios utilizados en sus estudios por los historiadores para la selección de imágenes, ha urgido a prestar atención a la amplia gama de imágenes “no artísticas” tradicionalmente ignorada por la Historia del Arte. La crítica podría hacerse extensiva al conjunto de los estudios sobre imágenes. De hecho, y a pesar de la emergencia del Pictorial Turn y del auge internacional de la Visual Culture, la “doctrina canónica de las imágenes”, además de no haberse zafado de la confusión del discurso sobre las imágenes con el discurso sobre el Arte, adolece de una debilidad crucial: asumiendo que las imágenes son una modalidad de signos, se muestra incapaz de ofrecer una definición plausible de “imagen” y, por tanto, inhabilitada para conformar un conocimiento sólidamente fundamentado de las imágenes.

Para dar cuenta de la dificultad que provoca este bloqueo, en este trabajo se contrastan el modelo canónico de las imágenes, ilustrado con el enfoque de Mitchell, con el enfoque combatido por éste, ilustrado con Gombrich. Apoyándome en este autor, propongo una opción que permite superar la aporía en que se encuentra el discurso sobre las imágenes actualmente hegemónico, y, asumiendo que las imágenes son artefactos determinados por el uso al que están destinados, sugiero una clasificación inédita de ellas.

What is the connection between the way we relate to images and our mode of existence in the world, today? How could we understand the impact that images have on our perception of the world, our expression of this perception, and our individual and collective identities? In order to provide an answer to these questions, a philosophical perspective would be required alongside the investigations carried out on the image by studies in visual culture, and in cinema and literature. During the seminar series, we will attempt at contemplating the image in a theoretical framework outlined by contemporary philosophical questions focusing on epistemology, critical theory, aesthetics and politics

The essay deals with the six “perspectives” of image analysis introduced by Paul Martin Lester in Visual Communication. Images with Messages, by including such theoretical and practical proposal in the “discussion on images” which has been worked out by art history from the beginning of the 19th century and it still lies at the heart of the debate in current Visual Studies. The essay suggests a synthetic revision of the discussion on the interpretation of images and on their communicative and persuasive power, aiming at providing a theoretical framework to the practical work of TICASS project. By the use of Lester’s six “perspectives”, the project aims at reading cases of visual communication in multicultural contexts. The analysis will focus on the opinions of some art historians, such as Aby Warburg, Erwin Panofsky, Michael Baxandall, as well as other scholars like Horst Bredekamp, William J. Thomas Mitchell and David Freedberg, who – starting form art history – have faced the problem related to the power of images in communicating messages.

Étude du dernier discours télévisé de Chávez comme une scène de reconnaissance de son idéologie avant de quitter le pouvoir à cause de sa mort. L'analyse contourne les significations dérivées de la présentation du binôme Diosdado Cabello - Nicolás Maduro comme successeurs officiels du régime totalitaire, en s'appuyant sur les travaux de John Berger et W.T.J. Mitchell.

L’opera di W.J.T Mitchell – puntualmente introdotta in Italia dagli studi di Michele Cometa, Andrea Pinotti e Antonio Somaini –  ha avuto un’influenza determinante nella svolta visuale delle discipline umanistiche e nella formazione della composita disciplina dei visual studies. Rilanciando l’iconologia di Panofsky, e intrattenendo un dialogo fecondo con la svolta iconica proposta dalla Bildwissenschaft continentale, testimonia la necessità di indagare il significato e l’agency delle immagini nel complesso orizzonte della cultura visuale contemporanea.

The article reppresents a study on two interpretation of the so called visual turn, proposed in the field of contemporary human and social studies. In comparative perspective are taken into account the points of view on the visual/iconin turn in HSS proposed by the Visual Studies ( W. J. T. Mitchell) and in the context if Bildwissenshaft (Gottfried Boehm);

This article addresses César Díaz Meléndez's 'Zepo' (2015) as an extended reflection – a 'metapicture' – on the material conditions by which its sand pictures are made. It examines the film's self-reflexive gestures by tracing its visual-narrative motifs of traces on surfaces (blood spots, footprints), together with covering layers and depth (breakable ice, trappings under snow).

W.J.T. Mitchell, scienziato delle immagini

La prima edizione della Pietro Debenedetti Lecture si svolgerà alla GAM | Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino, venerdì 16 marzo 2018 alle 17.30, e sarà tenuta da W.J.T. Mitchell. Mitchell, figura di riferimento mondiale per le nuove teorie dell’immagine, insegna Storia dell’arte all’Università di Chicago. Le sue opere, da The Language of Images (1980) a Picture Theory (1994), da Cloning Terror (2011) a Image Science (2015), animano da alcuni decenni la riflessione transdisciplinare sul rapporto tra l’immagine, la conoscenza e i suoi usi politici. Per Raffaello Cortina editore è appena uscito Pictorial Turn, una raccolta dei suoi scritti più significativi, curati e tradotti da Michele Cometa e Valeria Cammarata.

L’iniziativa

La conferenza di W.J.T. Mitchell si intitolerà The Ship of Fools: From Metaphor to World Picture e sarà tenuta in inglese. Una versione italiana del testo sarà distribuita al pubblico, che potrà fruire anche della proiezione di alcune slide. W.J.T. Mitchell condurrà il pubblico in un percorso legato alla forza politica delle immagini, in un contesto che attraversa la guerra al terrorismo, l’elezione di Donald Trump e l’avvento dei populismi. La conferenza problematizzerà il ruolo delle immagini come fattore di costruzione delle identità, in un pendolo che oscilla tra la violenza e l’apertura alle diversità.

Le Pietro Debenedetti Lectures

La serie delle Pietro Debenedetti Lectures nasce in seno a un progetto di ricerca del Dipartimento di Filosofia e Scienze dell’educazione dell’Università di Torino, coordinato da Federico Vercellone. Il progetto è finanziato dall’Università di Torino e dal Fondo in memoria di Pietro Debenedetti (Dipartimento di Filosofia e Scienze dell’educazione). L’iniziativa è patrocinata dal CIM | Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerca sulla Morfologia “Francesco Moiso”, dal Centro Studi Arti della Modernità e dalla GAM | Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino.

The possibility and interest of narration in abstract art has long been questioned. Where Modernism considered that narration was foreign to visual art and should thus be avoided, narratology has often considered that it was impossible to narrate with single images, let alone abstract ones. Developing an idea by David Hume, I start by opposing Media Essentialism, the thesis that each medium has an essence that should be exemplified by any use of the medium. However, I also show a problem with W. J. T. Mitchell's criticism of Modernist arguments about narrative: Mitchell fails to distinguish stories told in works of art from stories told about them.
I argue that narration should be understood as a phenomenon located in reception rather than production. This is a position that has long been recognized by reception theory (see Umberto Eco& Wolfgang Iser) and cognitive narratology. If we want to know if there is narrative in abstract art, the question we must ask then is if abstract works of art can systematically convey narratives. I try to show that this is indeed the case.
Radicalizing a reception-based definition of narrativity, we can say that any representation that systematically conveys a story should be considered a narrative and that any representation that is systematically understood as narrating something should be considered to have at least some degree of narrativity. In my paper, I demonstrate that the latter is the case with at least some abstract works of art. I more specifically argue that abstract single paintings can have narrativity and that abstract films can be narratives, conveying full-blown stories. I also provide criteria to distinguish abstract works of art that have narrativity from others that don't.

La possibilité et l'intérêt de la narration dans l'art abstrait font question depuis longtemps. Là où le Modernisme a considéré que la narration éloignait l'art visuel de sa nature propre et considérait l'abstraction comme un moyen pour l'éviter, la narratologie a souvent considérée qu'il était impossible de raconter une histoires en une image et ce d'autant plus si l'image était abstraite. Cependant, si on comprend la narration comme un phénomène de réception plutôt que de production, comme l'a fait la théorie de la réception depuis Umberto Eco et Wolfgang Iser et le défend la théorie cognitive de la narration, la question qui se pose est celle de savoir si des oeuvres abstraites peuvent être reçues de manière récurrente et systématique comme narratives. Si cela était le cas, elles pourraient alors être jugées comme narratives. Dans mon article, je démontre que cela est le case. Je ne vais pas jusqu'à défendre qu'une image unique abstraite peut être un récit, mais je soutiens tout de même qu'il y a des films abstraits qui sont des récits et je discute de nombreux cas de réception narrative d'images abstraites, ce qui me mène à reconnaître la narrativité de certaines oeuvres d'art abstraites. Je donne également quelques indications sur les critères pour les distinguer d'oeuvres abstraites non-narratives.

Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie historii chilijskiego ruchu muralistycznego, który rozwinął się najinstensywniej w latach 60 i 70 – podczas kampanii prezydenckiej, w której kandydował Eduardo Frei Montalva i Salvador Allende. Lewicowe i konserwatywne brygady muralistyczne zaczęły toczyć ze sobą wizualną walkę, w której powstały dwie, najważniejsze lewicowe ugrupowania artystyczne: Brygada Ramony Parry i Brygada Elmo Catalán. Artykuł ma nie tylko prześledzić historię chilijskiego ruchu, ale również przedstawić go w kontekście badań W.J.T. Mitchella, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ideologii i fetyszyzmu towarowego. Tekst skupia się również na zaprezentowaniu teorii Jacquesa Rancière w kontekcie sztuki muralistycznej w Chile.

Immersion ist ein vielschichtiger — unterschiedlich bewerteter und definierter — Begriff: Fixierung des Körpers vs. Partizipation/Interaktion, Reflexion vs. Anästhetisierung, virtuell vs. real-räumlich, Illusion vs. Narration … All diese Punkte werden in diesem Definitionsversuch aufgegriffen und in Bezug zueinander gesetzt. Unter Einbezug der Heterotopie (≈ nach Foucault) und moderner Serien-Theorie wird ein umfassender Zugang zum Themenkomplex versucht, eine Art von Serieller Immersion vorgestellt.

Die Aufsatz ist eine erweiterte, umstrukturierte und zur losgelösten Rezeption umgestaltete Auskopplung des Immersions-Kapitels innerhalb der Disseration von Sönke Hahn "Bunker—TV, TV—Bunker: …" an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

La emblemática supone un objeto de estudio idóneo para analizar las complejas relaciones entre imagen y lenguaje en un contexto en el que ambos conviven con naturalidad y sin colisiones. Analizando esta relación bajo la teoría de la imagen de W.J.T. Mitchell se pueden extraer interesantes conclusiones sobre el modo en el que se configura la emblemática, su capacidad para saltar de un medio a otro y también su forma de atraer la atención del espectador y convencerlo de modificar su conducta moral mediante un medio mixto en el que conviven tanto imagen como lenguaje.

The author tries to characterize still fresh and recent phenomenon of
the postdigital aesthetics. He tries to answer the question: why
postdigital artists most often take destruction actions, use
imperfection, distortion and errors. He look at the work of glitch art
creators, using theoretical tools of Rosa Menkman and Michael
Betancourt. He wants to show the reason of returning to analogue in
postdigital age and underline the critical potential of using glitch
in contemporary art. The art of glitch perhaps gives the best example
of our postdigital condition and show discontinuous experience of
reality.
