Travel blogs are an under-utilized data repository of everyday geopolitical musings. These public, longform, generally reflexive texts allow researchers to better understand how travellers narrate their own positionality and agency within limiting state structures. Geopolitics scholars of varying theoretical and topical interests can use travel blogs as data to better understand how everyday tourists and travellers ‘live geopolitics.’ Drawing primarily from popular and feminist geopolitical insights, this paper shows how travel blogs help us to rethink questions about geopolitical authorship, especially within a digital landscape of media fragmentation. This paper also provides a case study on the geopolitical discourse of ‘border talk’ in the blogs of international volunteer teachers in Namibia.

As the European summer of 2019 beckons, it seems more than likely that the spectre
of overtourism will once again emerge amidst the hordes of travellers flocking to
popular cities including Barcelona, Venice, Amsterdam and Reykjavik as featured in
this volume. But of course, these destinations represent one end of the overtourism
spectrum; that is, destinations where host communities and city administrators are
groaning under the weight of growing and seemingly excessive tourist demand. While
at the other extreme, there are destinations off the ‘beaten track’ that would give
almost anything to be afflicted with the problem of too many tourists.

Abstract
Battlefield sites are important cultural heritage attractions and serve to enhance local, regional and national tourism resources. They are able to stimulate powerful emotional responses in some visitors and have deep, if contentious, personal and collective meanings. This paper investigates a particular type of feeling that is thought to exist when visitors experience the past. The phenomenon of numinosity is defined as a deeply transcendental and connective experience which is stimulated by an engagement with the past. Applying this concept to battlefield sites this paper explores the extent to which this experience is present amongst visitors. Beginning with an assessment of the place of battlefields as dark sites the paper proceeds by discussing the theory of numinosity and how there has been some empirical analysis of the concept at battlefield sites. This is then developed by presenting the results of a study into numinosity at battle sites in Britain. The paper concludes by showing how numinosity is a rare phenomenon and suggests that we should adopt a more nuanced understanding of it. Instead of maintaining a homogenous interpretation of the phenomenon the paper concludes that, when present, there might be a number of different gradations of the numen.

The term 'décroissance' (degrowth) signifies a process of political and social transformation that reduces a society's material and energy use while improving the quality of life. Degrowth calls for decolonizing imaginaries and institutions from-in Ursula Le Guin's words-'a one-way future consisting only of growth'. Recent scholarship has focused on the ecological and social costs of growth, on policies that may secure prosperity without growth, and the study of grassroots alternatives pre-figuring a post-growth future. There has been limited engagement, however, with the geographical aspects of degrowth. This special issue addresses this gap, looking at the rooted experiences of peoples and collectives rebelling against, and experimenting with alternatives to, growth-based development. Our contributors approach such resurgent or 'nowtopian' efforts from a decolonial perspective, focusing on how they defend and produce new places, new subjectivities and new state relations. The stories told span from the Indigenous territories of the Chiapas in Mexico and Adivasi communities in southern India, to the streets of Athens, the centres of power in Turkey and the riverbanks of West Sussex.

Within tourism research, trust has largely been conceptualised from psychological perspectives, allowing insights into the mechanisms through which resident/stakeholder relations generate trust. Whilst this work is valuable in understanding dynamics of trust relations, such focus has meant less attention has been given to the ways space influences trust in tourism contexts. Thus a geographical approach is put forth to understanding trust in tourism. Through observation and semi-structured interviews concerned with the implementation of a community tourism project in southwest China, insights are provided illustrating how trust is inscribed in place. It is shown that in the Chinese context, cultural place based specifities relating to pre-existing governance structures, social hierarchies, and the intersection of power, knowledge and trust influence the (in)abilities of NGOs to develop trust with specific residents. More meaningful dialogue between tourism research and geographical conceptualisations of trust is called for-as a way to attend to spatial and scalar differences in understandings of trust within tourism contexts.

In this study, the geographical distribution of modern accommodation facilities and postmodern sharing residences in Izmir are compared. First, the geographical distribution of traditional facilities was observed by using the data of Izmir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism. Afterwards, the locations of local residents who included their living spaces in CouchSurfing and Airbnb were determined. In this respect, 392 CouchSurfers were selected by random sampling method and they completed an online survey. The spatial data of Airbnb residences, on the other hand, were obtained from Airdna.
According to the findings, modern supply is concentrated in districts such as Çeşme (96-35%), Selçuk (19-7%) and Menderes (15-5%) which are characterized by sea-sun-sand and material, whereas postmodern supply is concentrated in Karşıyaka (181-12%), Bornova (161-11%), and Buca (61-4%) which are outside the traditional accommodation corridor and focus on non-material culture. On the other hand, the supply of Airbnb provides accommodation in the districts such as Çeşme (339-32%), Urla (46-4%) and Karaburun (44-4%) where traditional facilities are generally concentrated. The geographical distribution of modern (69-25%) and postmodern (235-16%) supply in central Izmir shows parallelism only in Konak. When this similarity on the district is examined on a quarter levels however, it turns out that the facilities are concentrated in central and coastal quarters and adjacent quarters whereas the residences are more dispersed and are located in the outskirts.
In conclusion, the opening of residences in tourism by individuals, adopting the sharing culture, has brought about more balanced distribution of accommodation within the destination. It has provided a range of locations and prices as well as creating an alternative accommodation possibility and this situation allows post-tourists to go outside of tourist bubble and transition to areas in the back regions which are the actual residential areas.

The intersection between social media, liminality and naturebased
tourism experiences hasn’t been the focus of previous tourism
research. Such intersection, on the other hand, is illustrative
of how social media relate to the constitution and performance
of tourism spatialities, tourist identities, storytelling and placemaking,
and can lead to relevant theoretical contributes. We aim
to investigate how liminality is expressed in relation to naturebased
experiences by tourists on social media, and what role
social media plays in mediating liminality during nature-based
tourism experiences. The analysis is based on a participatory netnography
of images and text posts, as well as online interviews
with users of the popular social media Instagram. Findings show
that the expression of tourism experiences in nature is closely
related to specific notions of liminal otherness as opposed to the
urban life and the everyday, where nature and wilderness are
expressed as related to the genuine, the authentic and a true
inner self. Creative combinations of pictures, captions and hashtags
make it easier for tourists to express the contrast between
the natural landscape and the everyday landscape once they
returned home. These combinations also relate closely to performances
of resistant and alternative selves and communities. At
the same time, such performances are mediated and contested
between freedom of self-expression, surveillance and social
norms, an aspect that makes their liminal nature ambiguous.

Umm Qais is one of the largest historical tourist sites in Jordan. It is surrounded by different residential and urban activities. To identify and predict the land use changes that may threaten the historical tourist attractions of Umm Qais, this study utilized LANDSAT images of the area for the years 1985, 1991, 2006, 2010, and 2016 and forecasted the change in the years 1997, 2003, and 2022 to monitor the change in barren, agricultural, water, and urban areas. The image analysis and classification were carried out using ArcGIS 10.2 whereas Markov chain analysis was used for forecasting purposes. The results of the study predict that the urban areas will expand by about 21.55% in the year 2022 compared to the year 2016 (15.75%). In addition, agricultural areas will surge by about 35.91%. The expansion in the urban and agricultural areas is predicted to be at the expense of barren areas especially those close to the Umm Qais historical site. These land use changes will cause urban development encroachments onto the cultural landscape of the site. A number of recommendations and policy implications, regarding buffer zoning, land expropriation, stakeholders’ involvement, and legislation, are suggested to mitigate the impacts of the current and
future urban development activities.

Travelling is simultaneously functional and meaningful: it is cultural, political, embodied, narrated and imagined. The main goal of this thematic issue is to discuss the tourist experience and mobilities in relation to various landscapes, which can be experienced in physical, narrated, mediated and other ways. Tourist landscapes occur through sensory and affective, as well as discursive and narrated, movement of people, vehicles, ideas and information. This thematic issue will examine how these travelling landscapes are experienced, practiced, imagined and performed in motion in various social and political contexts. We will take a closer look at the place- and culture-specific mobile practices from running and walking to travelling on various means of transport such as cars, boats, trains, bicycles, coaches, planes and others. We are also interested in discussing the ways culture, society, politics and religion affect and influence the formation of touristic landscapes.

Abstract
The economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts of tourism are increasing day by day which in parallel increases the interest of geography which examines tourism matters in terms of venues, spatial change, space-human relations with its own principles. The geography discipline makes an important contribution to tourism studies through different theories, methods, techniques and approaches. As with other disciplines, one of the most important academic outcomes of tourism geography is graduate theses. The first thesis on tourism in the world has been made by geographers and especially Anglo-American geographers have pioneering work in this field. Nowadays, the academic contributions of geographers to tourism are continuing in many countries of the world. The main objective of the study is to analyze the current situation of graduate thesis written in the field of tourism geography in Turkey and evaluate these academic theses which are one of the indicators of tourism geography and tourism sub-discipline in terms of subject, qualification, paradigm, literature and method. Therefore 111 graduate theses on tourism prepared by geographers until December 2015 have been determined and 103 of them have been accessed. Graduate theses have been analyzed according to years, universities, page numbers, bibliography cases, data analysis methods and contents according to processed subjects and the data were interpreted according to the findings in the study. An examination of the theses revealed that while pioneering and qualitative studies in tourism geography in Turkey were available, they were few in number and most of them were methodologically and theoretically inadequate in terms of scientific practices.

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS 1 August, 2019. Abstract submission deadline (250-300 words)
The three guiding themes of the CTS-Asia Pacific 2020 Conference address the multifaceted and paradoxical implications of doing tourism in increasingly troubled times. We welcome presentations from scholars and practitioners that employ a critical approach to tourism studies. Rather than simply being “critical of tourism”, we base our analyses in critical theory and praxis, and recognize the need and desire for tourism as both an industry and social practice. We anticipate the participation of practitioners, travel writers and tourism-focused scholars from across a range of disciplines such as anthropology, geography, sociology, political science, and cultural, environmental, women’s, area, and tourism studies. The conference is organized around three themes: Responsibility, Resistance, and Resurgence.
Confirmed Keynotes speakers.
Tony Wheeler (Author and co-founder of the travel publisher The Lonely Planet).
Christine R. Yano (Professor of Anthropology at the University of Hawai`i).
Dr. Tazim Jamal (Professor in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences at Texas A&M University).
Shinji Yamashita (Emeritus Professor of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Tokyo).
Hideki Endo (Professor of Tourism Studies in Faculty of Letters, Ritsumeikan University).
Kumi Kato (Professor of Tourism, Wakayama University).

The Tourist Gaze (Urry 1990, 2002) is one of the most discussed and cited tourism books (with about 4k citations on Google scholar). Whilst wide-ranging in scope, the book is known for the Foucault-inspired concept of the tourist gaze that brings out the fundamentally visual and image-saturated nature of tourism encounters. However, some recent literature has critiqued this notion of the 'tourist gaze' for reducing tourism to visual experiences-to sightseeing-and neglecting the other senses, bodily experiences and 'adventure'. The influential 'performance turn' (see Edensor, 1998; Coleman and Crang, 2002; Haldrup and Larsen, 2010 amongst others) within tourist studies suggests that the doings of tourism are physical or corporeal and not merely visual and it is necessary to regard 'performing' rather than 'gazing' as the dominant tourist research paradigm (Perkins and Thorns, 2001). Yet we argue here that there are in fact many similarities between the paradigms of gaze and of performance. They should 'dance together' rather than stare at each other at a distance. This paper rethinks the tourist gaze in the light of this performance turn and of a Goffmanian dramaturgical sociology by examining the embodied and multisensuous nature of gazing, as well as the complex social relations and fluid power geometries comprising performances of gazing. The Foucault-inspired notion of the tourist gaze can be enlivened, made more bodily

The heightened inclination of tourists to engage in risk-taking behaviour and promiscuity is frequently documented in the tourism literature. There is still much to be learned, however, about how the app-facilitated, sexual encounters that characterise (hetero)sexual lives in a mobile, digital world are becoming a part of tourists’ expected and desired tourism experiences. This chapter draws upon qualitative data from tourists who use the Location Aware dating application (app) Tinder, alongside a critical examination of Tinder’s User Interface (UI) and User Experience Design (UXD), to unravel the complexities of the ‘Tinder Tourist’ and the gamified ‘hook-up’ app that both drives and satiates their quest for sexual experiences abroad. Tinder Tourism is a phenomenon which can reveal much about travel and problematic power relations in digitally-mediated times.

This article analyses the factors that determine the mode of transport (bus, taxi or private car) chosen by tourists for transfers from a peripherally located high-speed rail station to their final destination. The study is based on a survey completed by tourists who used high-speed rail services to travel to the Costa Daurada, a tourism area on the Mediterranean coast of Southern Catalonia, Spain. The results of this study show that variables associated with the characteristics of the stay had a more decisive influence upon the decisions made by the travellers than the socio-demographic profiles of the tourists surveyed. The availability of direct public transport services for transfers from the station to the final destinations was a much more relevant factor than the cost and duration of the resulting trip. This study provides empirical evidence of the importance of accessibility for peripheral stations. In these cases, good connections via public transport apparently play a key role in both improving tourism development and promoting more sustainable mobility within the region.
