Time Perception

En este artículo se analizan el número, la velocidad y el sentido de las transiciones en la pobreza por ingresos en el período 2000 – 2005 en el Partido de Tres de Febrero (Buenos Aires), a partir de un estudio longitudinal de tres ondas (en los años 2000, 2002, y 2005). Este estudio refleja la crisis social del período, y al mismo tiempo, vuelve evidente la importancia de la perspectiva longitudinal en el análisis de la pobreza. El análisis de los datos longitudinales se vincula con distintos problemas del análisis del paso del tiempo en los fenómenos sociales, y a los desafíos metodológicos, epistemológicos, y de integración de las ciencias sociales con otras disciplinas científicas que pueden enriquecer esta tarea.

Cosmographies associated with Western cosmologies demonstrate transformations from classic wheels of time and chains of being to scales of nature, chronologies, and pedigrees. Pedigrees in turn are converted into linear timelines, bifurcating trees, and multidirectional networks. These diagrammatical transitions associate with changes in how time is conceptualized – as circular, linear, multilinear, multidirectional, and perhaps as non-existent. This paper focuses on delineating the phenomenologies associated with worldview turnovers. By identifying group-level dynamics, it demonstrates that time phenomenology extends individuals, and it demonstrates that paradigmatic shifts are driven by new observations, new jargon, and the invention of new quantitative methodologies and modelling techniques.

Huayan Buddhism (華嚴佛敎) is often understood as Chinese Buddhism’s effort to bring phenomena to the forefront of Buddhist discourse. The Huayan fourfold worldview (華嚴四法界), a trademark of the Huayan School, well illustrates this aspect of the school.  Developed by the Huayan patriarchs, Dushun (杜順 557-640), Fazang (法藏643-711), and Chengguan (澄觀738-839), the paradigm was meant to demonstrate the harmonious interpenetration of all phenomena. Compared to these Huayan thinkers, the lay Buddhist Li Tongxuan (李通玄, 635-730) has been known as an unorthodox thinker in Chinese Huayan Buddhism, although the applicability of expressions such as orthodox and unorthodox in this context is debatable. By examining some of the major concepts in Li’s Huayan thought, we find what Li shares with those thinkers in the orthodox tradition with regard to the Huayan Buddhist vision and where he diverges from other Chinese Huayan thinkers.
This chapter examines Li’s Huayan Buddhism with special attention to his concept of time, which I characterize as “non-temporality.” I will first discuss the concept of non-temporality in the context of perennial Buddhist themes of existence and non-existence in relation to Li’s doctrinal classification, and then in relation to the Huayan theory of nature-arising and subitism which I consider as the core of Li’s Huayan Buddhism. I conclude with a consideration of the ontological and existential implications of Li’s Huayan phenomenology.

Este trabajo está dividido en cinco partes. (Cap.1) En primer lugar, se definen A-Theory y B- Theory, las dos corrientes que actualmente discuten acerca de la esencia del tiempo. (Cap. 2) Luego se aportan las claves para entender el origen de la discusión: cual era la pretensión de McTaggart, cómo formula las teorías A y B y qué recorrido toma la discusión. (Cap. 3) El tercer capítulo se centra en un artículo que publicó E. J. Lowe en 1987, interesante porque lee la contradicción de A-series como un problema de alcance en el uso de diferentes tiempos verbales. (Cap. 4) Luego se trata de clarificar la posición de Lowe en torno a los tenses de orden superior empleando un lenguaje formal. (Cap. 5) Y con una breve conclusión, se presenta la idea principal del trabajo recogiendo sintéticamente la argumentación que se ha seguido, enfatizando en la distinción entre de re y de dicto como clave para distinguir A-Theory y B-Theory.

Th rough an ethnography of undocumented migrants from Latin America to London, I explore the temporality of illegality as a piecemeal process in which migrants fi nd themselves embodying new ways of being in the world. I investigate the power of illegality beyond its legal connotations and through the analysis of the everyday experiences of migrants in London, I show how it aff ects the external structure of migrants' worlds, as well as their subjectivities. I show how the illegal status is imagined, embodied, and sustained over an indefi nite and uncertain length of time. Undocumented migrants in London are required to slowly adapt, to wait through anxious engagements with other people, and to deal with a legal system that controls their fractured presents and their uncertain futures.

According to our results, increase in productivity of personal prediction has a positive influence on life satisfaction. The present research explores what role the various types of future prediction play in personal life satisfaction. The study focuses on some psychological time phenomena: desires, life choices, aspirations, motivations. To influence personal well-being the desires might be mature, productive, strong and adequately assessed the current life situation. For high level of well-being intrapersonal desires are more important than interpersonal ones. The life choice determining the horizon prediction leads to the transformation of meanings due to the development of new causal sequences of life-satisfaction. The satisfaction with own self and own life world grows when a person makes life-changing decisions from some alternatives. There are the criteria of readiness for significant choices to increase life-satisfaction: self-organizing; psychosemantic; subjective; functional; operational. The stages of life aspirations include communicative semiotization for defining unconscious ambitions and the registration of the forecast as an underway to the desired plot of worthy life, the narration activation leads to the verbal form of the forecast as a desirable plot of a worthy life, and purposeful creation of the story about decent future life, known as setting the concrete tasks. Motivation-semantic future structuring determines the personal life-satisfaction while taking the narrative form in different contexts of communication. The future structuring which is directly related to the effort to optimize the quality of life is self-creating and re-assessment one; in the 1-st model a person re-assesses adopted values and the source of life changes as changes of own self through the integration of new experience; in the 2-and model the values are already adopted, interpreted, and the movement is due to the changes in life situation.

Global climate change is a crisis on many levels. In this article, I am interested in climate change as a crisis of temporality, affecting our experience of time in two ways. The first is that climate change spans time and tense in ways that make it difficult to conceptualize. For example, climate change raises questions about how our past actions have led us to this moment in time. It also demands that in our present we consider initiatives necessary to decelerate climate change's consequences, but the potential outcomes of climate change and these interventions point to a future of uncertainty. Complicating this idea, climate change as a human and cultural experience follows no past precedent, and the predictions surrounding it often paint a picture of an unimaginable future.
