Textual Criticism

The focal point of this thesis is recent discussions and views on the supposedly lost Book of Noah by three scholars namely Michael Edward Stone, Divorah Dimant and Richard Steiner. Thus, the project examines the scholarly debates or discourse, tensions and discussions that are ongoing among scholars in the field of Pseudepigrapha studies particularly regarding the Book of Noah. It explores the different key moments/turns in the history of the Book of Noah about how scholars at different time periods and contexts have imagined and argued for or against the existence of such entity, and what this discussion may tell us about the development of studies of Jewish Antiquity as a modern discipline. It employs meta-critical literary analysis and Book History as method and theory respectively. The thesis belongs to the discipline History of Religions.

Since H. J. M. Milne and T. C. Skeat’s study of Codex Sinaiticus (1938), with their appendix on the Vatican codex, it has generally been accepted that there were two scribes responsible for the copying of B(03). However, before this groundbreaking study, scholars varied in identifying anywhere from one to four scribes in the codex. While most specialists in the study of B(03) continue to follow the conclusions of Milne and Skeat, it is widely acknowledged that a full-fledged study of the manuscript’s scribes is still necessary and that its results may indicate the work of more than two copyists. This paper is a summary of my progress in a study of the scribes of B(03). Using the evidence from codicology, paratextual features, and paleography, I propose a refinement of Milne and Skeat’s division of scribal labor and reintroduce the possibility of a third scribe.

Ovo su podatci na osnovi kojih je nastala moja prezentacija "Kako nam i mogu li nam onimi pomoći u tekstološkoj raščlambi protestantskoga Novog testamenta?" održana na skupu "Jezik hrvatskih protestantskih izdanja u kontekstu hrvatskih i europskih književnojezičnih koncepcija XVI. stoljeća" 20. rujna 2019. u Zagrebu. Moguće je da ću nakon objave rada sa skupa postaviti novu, dorađenu inačicu ovog dokumenta ako budem smatrao da je to potrebno. Slijedi sažetak iz knjižice sažetaka s tog skupa: U radu će se tekstološki analizirati reprezentativni uzorak onima zabilježenih u Novome testamentu Antona Dalmatina i Stipana Konzula, i to u prvome dijelu iz 1562. Posebna pozornost bit će usmjerena na odnose tih onima s ekvivalentnim onimima iz Bernardinova lekcionara (BL), Lutherova prijevoda, Trubarova prijevoda (1557.) te iz relevantnih latinskih izvora. Kao kontrolno sredstvo, iznimno će se konzultirati i drugi izvori. Razmjeri Dalmatinova i Konzulova oslanjanja na tekst BL-a donekle su poznati, stoga će se na osnovi dijelova koji se nisu mogli osloniti na taj lekcionar dati procjena vjerojatnosti i razmjera oslanjanja na Trubarov prijevod – pod inicijalnom hipotezom da mu je Lutherov tekst bio uzor kao i hrvatskim protestantima. U tu će se svrhu posebno provjeriti mogu li se utvrditi tekstološki relevantne razlike između onima koji potencijalno imaju podlogu u BL-u i ostalih. Tasan 茶山, Chŏng Yagyong 丁若鏞 (1762-1836), lived during a period of great religious change, controversy, and as a result, persecution. This paper investigates how Catholic ideas and Confucian ideas shaped Tasan’s writings in a very complicated, and often dangerous, socio-political context. This context produced a unique Wirkungsgeschichte (history of effects) that transformed Tasan’s intellectual horizon and contributed to his problematic engagement with Christian ideas that stem from Matteo Ricci’s Ch’ŏnju sirŭi天主實義 (The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven).  I deconstruct Tasan’s writings, uncovering a heterogeneous textuality, where Christian and Confucian concepts converge, shaping each other. Tasan’s return to the “origin” of the Confucian tradition, leads him to dislodge the ideas of Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130-1200) by revealing their “impure” origins – influenced by Buddhism and Daoism. He re-orientates his writings along a trajectory that allows for the “survival” of Christian ideas within his re-conceptualized Christo-Confucianology, which exposes phantom ideals, inherited and fixed by tradition. However, this transcultural dialogue enables him to envisage Sangje (上帝) [the Lord on High] as a God who defers to other names, beyond Confucianism. Hence, I engage with Tasan, not as a “Korean” thinker, which would limit the implications of his thought, but as a transcultural philosopher whose Confucian and Christian ideas interpenetrate each other.

다산 정약용(丁若鏞, 1762~1836)은 종교적 격변과 논쟁, 그에 따른 박
해의 시대에 살았다. 이 논문은 그의 실제 삶의 외상(外傷, trauma)을 평
가하고 기독교가 불법적인 것으로 금지되고 신도들이 처형되었던 시기,
초기 가톨릭교도들 중 그의 역할에 주목한다. 그러한 시대적 맥락은 다
산의 지적 지평을 변화시킨 독특한 영향사(影響史, Wirkungsgeschichte)를
낳았다. 그러한 영향을 이해함으로써 마테오리치Matteo Ricci의 『천주
실의天主實義』를 통해 알려진 기독교 사상에 대한 다산의 지적 참여를
이해할 수 있다. 필자는 다산의 저작을 해체하고 기독교와 유학의 사상
이 모이는 곳을 발견하고 유사한 개념들을 노출할 것이다. 다산은 유학
전통의 ‘근원’으로 회귀하여 주희(朱熹, 1130~1200)의 사상을 해체하였다.
그는 그가 재편한 그리스도-유교학 안에서 기독교 사상의 ‘생존’을 참
작하면서 주희 사상의 방향을 재설정하였다. 그의 그리스도-유교학에
서 ‘상제上帝’는 바로 ‘천주天主’의 다른 이름이었다. 다산을 ‘한국의’ 사
상가로만 보는 것은 그의 사상적 함의를 한정지을 것이므로 필자는 그
를 상호-문화적intercultural 철학자로 그릴 것이다. 그가 참여한 유학 사
상은 기독교 사상에 의해 변형되었던 것이다.

En esta entrega continuamos el proyecto de editar
la obra completa conservada de Leoncio de Neápolis.
Tras la Vida de Simeón el loco, la Vida de Juan el limosnero
y la Vida de Espiridón, pasamos de sus escritos hagiográficos
al presente tratado apologético, conservado fragmentariamente.
Hemos consultado manuscritos de modo directo pero también
revisado y cotejado las ediciones del texto o de sus fuentes (Kotter,
Déroche, Lamberz), para llegar a una propuesta editorial diferente;
en el caso del texto aportado por las Actas del Concilio de Nicea,
sobre todo, el trabajo crítico es notorio. Hemos añadido versión
española, que no existía, notas aclaratorias e introducción.
Esperamos que sea una nueva aportación para difundir
la obra de este autor y que ella colabore al conocimiento
de Bizancio.

Tra i numerosi meriti di Carlo Conti Rossini occorre ricordare che egli fu il primo a ravvisare nei testi del Gädlä Säma‘tat (“Atti dei Martiri”), celebre silloge di vite di santi e martiri stranieri tradotte in massima parte dall’arabo intorno al XIV sec., tracce di un fondo più antico, contraddistinto da un antecedente linguistico greco e perciò risalente al primo periodo della letteratura etiopica, quella “aksumita” (IV-VII sec. d.C.). Sulla scia del contributo di Conti Rossini, questo studio intende sottoporre a scrutinio filologico la Passio di Aniceto e Fotino, martiri nicomedeni commemorati in Etiopia il 12 tahśaś. Un buon numero di evidenze testuali, tra cui possibili fraintendimenti, numerose corrispondenze sintattiche con la versione greca e alcune ragguardevoli liste di teonimi greco-orientali, depone verisimilmente a favore di una origine greca, e perciò molto antica, della versione etiopica. Secondo la tesi propugnata in questo contributo, la Passio di Aniceto aggiungerebbe un nuovo tassello al crescente repertorio di documenti agiografici di età aksumita in nostro possesso.

This paper explores the manuscript tradition of the Vita Merlini, a hexametrical poem (1529 lines) written by Geoffrey of Monmouth in c. 1150. Special attention will be paid to ms XVI Q 14 in York Minster Library, a witness that was not used for the most recent critical edition (1973). A description of the manuscript will be followed by the analysis of some of its variant readings that will prove the importance of this witness for a new edition of the poem.

This article is a critical analysis of Heimskringla's source reliability, first and foremost from an archeological point of view, but also within the historical field. The analysis is presented as a case study where the relevance and reliability for battlefield archaeology is assessed. Some focus will be put on when different forms of warfare and organization were introduced, examples include shield walls and other battle formations, use of horses in battle or the introduction of Leidangen.

Resumo: Este artigo é uma análise crítica sobre a confiabilidade da Heimskringla como fonte, em primeiro lugar, do ponto de vista arqueológico, mas também dentro do campo histórico. A análise é apresentada como um estudo de caso em que a relevância e confiabilidade da arqueologia do campo de batalha são avaliadas. Algum foco será incluido quando diferentes formas de guerra e organização forem introduzidas, exemplos incluem paredes de escudos e outras formações de batalha, uso de cavalos em batalha ou a introdução de Leidangen.

Old Greek Job (og Job) is by one sixth shorter than its mt counterpart, which most scholars attribute to the translator, not to a shorter Vorlage. Most arguments however, are circular, since they rely on an evaluation of the translation technique, which is difficult to determine with an unknown Vorlage of the translation. This paper presents a way of sidestepping this problem, by employing the Idiolect Test. In a study, Hebrew idiolect items were compiled and studied for their distribution within mt Job. Those items hint at a specific language use of one author, or of a small group of authors. The result shows that there is no mt Job idiolect coinciding with the non-translated passages of the og version. This supports the majority opinion: the og translator worked from a long Vorlage and was responsible for the omissions.

The Philology of a Map. Studying Old Cartography Using the Method of Textual Criticism: the Case of Toponymy of the Map of the Principality of Polotsk by S. Pachołowiecki from 1580.

The aim of this paper is to make an experimental application of textual criticism (the stemma method or Lachmann's method) in the analyses of early-modern maps. It is supposed to verify whether, and to what extent, the means developed by philologists to establish how texts were transmitted in medieval codices, can be applied to study the transmission of geographic knowledge on early-modern maps. The author postulates that well-tried procedures should be used in studies of textual parts of old maps. They allow the formulation of filiation hypotheses. These procedures consist of collating extant texts and detecting mistakes that indicate, connect or divide individual branches of tradition.

The subject analysed is the toponymy appearing on the map "Descriptio Ducatus Polocensis" (The Description of the Principality of Polotsk) by Stanisław Pachołowiecki, engraved in Rome by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri in 1580 and on maps stemming from the same archetype. The author compiles a complete index of toponyms and hydronyms in transliteration and transcription, identifies them and provides the names in Belarussian, Russian and Polish. He also annotates each of them with a short topographic-historical description. Taking into consideration the state of the art regarding mutual relations between cartographic works drawing on Pachołowiecki’s map of the Principality of Polotsk, he proposes a hypothetic stemma depicting the genealogy of the toponymic image of the Principality of Polotsk on 16th and 17th century maps. The analysis also includes four other relics: a manuscript map of Stanisław Sulimowski from 1580, a printed map "Magni Ducatus Lithuaniae, Livoniae et Moscoviae decriptio" (A Description of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Livonia and Muscovy) by Maciej Strubicz from 1589; "Lithuania" by Gerard Mercator from 1595; and the so-called Radziwiłł’s Map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from 1613.

Based on the analysis of the toponymic corpus of all these maps, Franczak proves that Pachołowiecki’s printed map from 1580 did not have a direct effect on the later cartographic works. Such an influence was, however, exerted by its manuscript original, which shaped the image of the Lithuanian-Muscovite borderland in European cartography of the 17th and 18th centuries through the maps of Sulimowski and Strubicz.
