Sustainable City

The first approach for environmental sustainable development to the global community was introduced in 1992 in the United Nations conference on environment and development, the "Earth Summit", which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.(genda21). Defining Sustainable development as the one that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Therefore, the study will focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals UN-SDGs and the making of Sustainable cities. The aim of the research is to propose a framework to transform Greater Khartoum into a Sustainable city and to find out criteria for an Assessment Method that is applicable for Greater Khartoum. Which including: providing Safe affordable housing and basic services, Sustainable transportation, Sustainable home settlements in the three towns, Protect culture and Natural Heritage, Reduce Waste including water, air and solid waste, Public access, Green-space, Support positive economic, social and environmental links between urban and rural areas, National and local disaster risk reduction strategies, Interlinkages and implications for policy-making In addition, the methodology of the research focuses on defining, identifying and measuring the indicators and sub-items. The measurement applied through survey and questionnaire. Distributed and distribute to all engineers specialized in architecture, urban, civil, electrical and mechanical engineers in the three cities (Khartoum-Khartoum North-Omdurman). Finally, the outcomes of the research, applying the criteria of SDGs to evaluate the present situation in sustainable development criteria in Greater Khartoum; most of the indicator record results The research recorded results show that the goals were not achieved in most of the situations, between (20-30) especially in services (Table 1), waste management and open spaces are average (40-49). Will provide valuable recommendations towards improving the future and urban planning and sustainable development for the Capital city.

LES JARDINS DES ÉCOQUARTIERS MÉDITERRANÉENS
Les études scientifiques sur les jardins des écoquartiers ou quartiers durables sont rares, encore plus sur les jardins paysagers des écoquartiers méditerranéens. L’héritage symbolique des jardins méditerranéens dans la construction de référents identitaires régionaux passe de plus en plus par la réalisation actuelle de jardin contemporain s’émancipant de l’échelle de la maison ou de l’îlot pour généralement entourer ou former une ossature pour un lotissement ou un quartier durable de grande envergure. La volonté des aménageurs réside dans le fait de créer un paysage de verdure servant à la fois de squelette du projet d’aménagement et d’élément unificateur des bâtiments et
des hommes à l’échelle du quartier dit durable. À l’aide du parkway paysager et écologique, les paysagistes proposent de concevoir autrement le statut, la forme et les interdépendances de ces nouveaux morceaux de ville que sont les écoquartiers situés le plus souvent dans le périurbain proche ou en périphérie de la métropole méditerranéenne. Trois étapes parcourent notre raisonnement : du jardin au paysage urbain, l’héritage des civilisations méditerranéennes peut nous permettre d’entrevoir différemment la construction d’écoquartiers notamment à travers l’adaptation de leurs cahiers des charges aux impératifs climato-morphologiques, sans cependant omettre la question de l’utopie dans cette démarche de recherche d’un nouvel Éden (1). Dans un deuxième temps, paysage et contraintes réglementaires impliquent pour les écoquartiers méditerranéens de penser les trois grandes échelles d’un projet d’aménagement d’un nouveau quartier : grand paysage, paysage de proximité, paysage domestique (2). Mais alors, comment faire ? Comment parvenir à une alliance des contraires conciliant zones vertes et densification ? Il est important de préserver la faune et flore locale par l’arrivée d’un impératif difficile à maîtriser comme les corridors écologiques. Il faut savoir coupler biodiversité et densité urbaine pour créer de nouvelles formes urbaines. Un indicateur de biodensité est alors envisagé prenant en compte la réunion de deux facteurs clefs de ces écoquartiers : comment mesurer et assurer la biodiversité source de santé et de bien-être et comment assurer densité urbaine et polyfonctionnalité ? Ici, l’ambiance urbaine et paysagère renvoie aux
notions de bien-être et de qualité environnementale dans des exemples de médiation citoyenne par le végétal avec néanmoins une concurrence imprévus aux écoquartiers, les jardins spontanés comme dans l’exemple de Rome que nous développerons, mais aussi en Espagne sur les ruines des chantiers abandonnés (3).

THE GARDENS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN ECO-DISTRICTS

Scientific studies on the gardens of eco-districts or sustainable neighborhoods are rare, even more so on the landscaped gardens of Mediterranean eco-neighborhoods. The symbolic heritage of the Mediterranean gardens in the construction of regional identity referents increasingly passes by the current realization of contemporary garden emancipating from the scale of the house or the island to generally surround or form a frame for a subdivision or a large sustainable neighborhood. The will of developers is to create a landscape of greenery serving both skeleton of the development project and unifying element of buildings and men in the so-called sustainable neighborhood scale. With the help of the landscaped and ecological parkway, landscapers propose to conceive otherwise the status, the form and the interdependencies of these new pieces of city that are eco-neighborhoods located most often in the peri-urban near or on the outskirts of the Mediterranean metropolis. Three stages run through our reasoning: from the garden to the urban landscape, the legacy of Mediterranean civilizations can give us a glimpse of
differently the construction of eco-districts especially through the adaptation of their specifications to climate-morphological imperatives, without however omitting the question of utopia in this process of seeking a new Eden (1).In a second step, landscape and constraints
for Mediterranean eco-neighborhoods to think of
three large scales of a project to develop a new neighborhood: large
landscape, proximity landscape, domestic landscape (2). But then, how
make ? How to achieve an alliance of opposites reconciling green zones and densification? It is important to preserve the local flora and fauna by the arrival an imperative difficult to control like the ecological corridors. It is necessary knowing how to combine biodiversity and urban density to create new forms urban. A biodensity indicator is then considered taking into account the meeting of two key factors of these eco-districts: how to measure and ensure Biodiversity source of health and well-being and how to ensure density urban and polyfunctionality? Here, the urban and landscape atmosphere refers to notions of well-being and environmental quality in examples of Citizen mediation by plants with unforeseen competition to eco-neighborhoods, spontaneous gardens as in the example of Rome that we will develop, but also in Spain on the ruins of the yards abandoned (3).

This article presents research on the participatory approach to projects  and processes of urban regeneration. It looks at the concepts of Sustainability and  Habitability and their relationship with the urban environment and architecture. It  carries out a revision of the participatory dimension of several urban regeneration  processes carried out in Andalusia region and other parts of Spain and their link to  results obtained in terms of environmental, economic and social improvement. In  the light of this, it defines possible methodological tools that may be effectively  applied to traditional urban regeneration processes. It presents a case study and its  peculiarities and it draws some conclusions on its effectiveness and suitability. It  compares citizen-led processes with public management-led ones. It analyses  some potential tools to be used in this kind of projects and processes and identifies  the existing gaps, providing possible strategies for developing new research that  could be developed in deep.

    El presente artículo presenta el enfoque desarrollado por la investigación  desde el ámbito de la participación ciudadana en acciones o proyectos de regeneración  urbana. Plantea los conceptos de sostenibilidad, y habitabilidad y su  relación con el ámbito urbano y la arquitectura. Realiza una revisión de la dimensión  participativa de diversas acciones de regeneración urbana realizadas en Andalucía  o España y su vinculación a los resultados obtenidos en términos de mejoras  urbanas medioambientales, económicas y sociales. Posteriormente, define las posibles  herramientas metodológicas que permitan su incorporación efectiva en procesos  de regeneración urbana tradicionales. Presenta el estudio de casos realizado  y sus  peculiaridades, extrayendo conclusiones sobre su eficacia y pertinencia.  Compara las actuaciones lideradas por la ciudadanía frente a las lideradas por la  administración pública. Analiza las herramientas potenciales a utilizar en este tipo  de procesos y proyectos y detecta las carencias al respecto, proponiendo posibles  estrategias de desarrollo posterior de la investigación.

The paper analyses the sustainability of a solar settlement in the city of Münster. It does so in two ways. First it analyses the urban sustainable developement, the planning of the settlement, the houses and the structure. Second, a qualitative research about  the sustainability of the daily practices (consumption, mobility) of Solar Settlement´s inhabitants shows the attitudes of them towards sustainability.
Finally the results of this two approaches combined, create a broad understanding if the settlement is sustainable in all three dimensions of sustainability (social, economoc, ecologic).

Using multi-source data analysis a complex comparative geospatial analysis has been performed: the development, current & past environmental and social problems of three cities are studied. The main particularity of this project is its integrity and complexity: multi-source data used (geospatial, narrative, statistical, visual, visualized graphs and tables, pictures and archive information), multi-disciplinary approach (geography, history, statistics, sociology, economics, demography, and environmental studies). The patterns of urban risks in three representative regions of Russia (Moscow and St.-Petersburg) are assessed for different climate change scenarios. Expected future human activity is represented by the trajectory of quantitative indicators from the past (1970) up to date (2012/2015). Updated inventories, as well as human susceptibility towards urban development, possible consequences of uncontrolled city sprawl, and risk maps will be produced for each city (Moscow and St.-Petersburg) for several time periods.

Le réceptacle que sont les expositions universelles nous offre un formidable champ d’investigation pour comprendre les sociétés urbains dans leurs grands traits, mais aussi dans leur capacité à innover, proposer et s’exposer pour des raisons de progrès et de vivre ensemble. Généralement, l’histoire urbaine à pour champ  principal l’étude de l’organisation des villes et les différentes évolutions sociétales  qu’elle connaît. Une multitude de monographies locales sont réalisées à travers le monde et pourtant, avec les expositions universelles on peut dresser un portrait de ville tant historique que géographique permettant de mieux comprendre les adaptations du monde urbain aux effets de la mondialisation et de ses différentes phases.
De plus, les expositions répondent aux autres expositions, elles deviennent une longue chaîne tout en s’influençant et proposant des raccourcis, des amplification ou d’étonnantes similitudes, ce qui d’un côté nous amène à observer une uniformisation des pratiques, mais aussi des différenciations qui s’appuient sur les identités locales tout en rapprochant les formes urbaines créées pour l’occasion.
A travers ce travail de recherche sur les expositions universelles et l’importance de son rattachement à l’histoire et géographie de la métropole de Toulouse, deux histoires, deux géographies en parallèle s’entrecroisent, se répondent et expliquent en partie pour les grandes métropoles les effets de la mondialisation des cultures, des savoirs, des techniques et des modes de vie.

Curiously, rarely and strangely, the narrow relations between the practice of the World Fairs  (World expo) of the middle of the XIXth century until our days and the urban history of cities hosts were not the object of change of scale and of historiographical and geographical criticism in the plan of the contributions and of the correspondences between a local urban history and a world urban history.
The receptacle that are the World Fairs (World expo) offers us a great field of investigation to understand the urban societies in their big features, but also in their capacity to be innovated, to propose and to expose for reasons of progress and to live together. Generally, the urban history in for main field the study of the organization of cities and the various societal evolutions which she (it) knows. A multitude of local monographs is worldwide realized and nevertheless, with the World Fairs we can raise city portrait so historic as geographical allowing to understand better the adaptations of the urban world to the effects of the globalization and its various phases.

Curiosamente, rara vez objeto y, sorprendentemente, la estrecha relación entre la práctica de las exposiciones universales de mediados del siglo XIX hasta la actualidad y la historia urbana de las ciudades anfitrionas no han estado reduciendo historiográfico y crítico y geográfico en términos de contribuciones y conexiones entre una historia urbana local y una historia urbana mundial. El receptáculo que es la muestra universal nos ofrece un formidable campo de investigación para entender las sociedades urbanas en sus características principales, pero también en su capacidad de innovar, proponer y exponerse por razones de progreso y de convivencia. En general, la historia urbana tiene como campo principal el estudio de la organización de las ciudades y las diversas evoluciones sociales que conoce. Una multitud de monografías locales se producen en todo el mundo y, sin embargo, con las exposiciones universales se puede dibujar un retrato de la ciudad histórica y geográfica para comprender mejor las adaptaciones del mundo urbano a los efectos de la globalización y sus diversas fases.
Además, las exposiciones responden a otras exposiciones, se convierten en una cadena larga al tiempo que influyen y ofrecen accesos directos, amplificación o similitudes sorprendentes, lo que por un lado nos lleva a observar una estandarización de prácticas, pero también diferenciaciones que se basan en identidades locales al unir formas urbanas creadas para la ocasión.
A través de este trabajo de investigación sobre exposiciones universales y la importancia de su conexión con la historia y la geografía de la metrópoli de Toulouse, dos historias, dos geografías en paralelo se entrelazan, responden y explican, en parte, a las principales ciudades los efectos de la globalización de las culturas, los conocimientos, las técnicas y las formas de vida.

Puputan Badung Square is a public open space located in central city of Denpasar. Based on initial observation, it is seen that the open space is lack of seating, vegetation, night lighting and cleanliness. Community activities occur only in some areas and at certain times. If the condition persists, it will impact the public open space role as a place to socialize for urban communities. There are several elements that affect the existence of open space including the system arrangements or the physical elements and activities in addition livability or non-physical elements. The study aims to determine the relationship between two variables, system arrangements and livability as well as the user's perception of the factors influencing the composition of open space. This study takes a case study at Puputan Badung Square. The method used is the qualitative method through field observations and place centered mapping. Furthermore, the quantitative methods using a questionnaire with samples were chosen from open space users selected through purposive random sampling techniques. Data were analyzed with SPSS correlation. The results of this study show a strong and significant correlation between the system arrangement and livability. Major elements forming the system arrangements can improve the comfort of activity as forming livability. The main factors which establish the physical elements such as vegetation shade, seating, lighting, playing and exercising area, while nonphysical factors formed a good perception such as legality of place, cleanliness, security, diversity of activities both physical and social, including religious or rituals and functional activities performed periodically.

In recent years, the world has seen the emergence of a number of urban projects which, under the banner of experimentation, have promoted alternative models of city-making capable, in theory, of creating sustainable built environments. Among these supposedly experimental models, the smart city and the eco-city stand out in terms of geographical diffusion, and are hailed by their advocates as the mark of an innovative urbanism based on a scientific approach to urban development. Through the analysis of Hong Kong and Masdar City, examples of a smart-city agenda and an eco-city project respectively, this paper questions the sustainability of so-called smart cities and eco-cities, by investigating the extent to which they are developed in a controlled and systematic manner as their developers claim. More specifically, the paper counterclaims mainstream understandings of smart and ecological urbanism, arguing that what are promoted as cohesive settlements shaped by a homogeneous vision of the sustainable city, are actually fragmented cities made of disconnected and often incongruous pieces of urban fabric. Theoretically, these claims are discussed through the concept of Frankenstein urbanism which draws upon Mary Shelley's novel as a metaphor for unsuccessful experiments generated by the forced union of different, incompatible elements.

PERTH IS NOT high in the national consciousness, although its growth has sparked some interest. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics projections about its population growth are remarkable – three million by the early 2020s, passing Brisbane later that decade, five million by 2050, bigger than Sydney now: the prospect of becoming Australia’s second ‘global city’ megalopolis beckons.
