S.M. UC 71 was a Type UC II minelaying U-boat in the German Imperial Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. Built in 1916, UC 71 was credited with sinking 61 ships, either by torpedo or by laid mines. UC 71 sank 1919 immediately before the southern entrance to the North Sea Island of Helgoland while on her way to England to be surrendered. Upon request of the author, the submarine was put under protection as a historic monument and was examined by scientific divers from Kiel University, Germany in 2014. The aim of the investigation included the documentation of the condition of the wreck with high resolution photo and video cameras as well as measurements of the remaining thickness of the outer and pressure hulls with an ultrasonic thickness gauge. The wreck is in
very good condition, but it was observed that the outer hull is almost completely destroyed, while the pressure hull has first holes. Besides the English submarine E 10 (BSH-Nr. 1088), which is also a protected historic monument, S.M. UC 71 is the only remaining submarine from World War I in German waters.

This preface to the 'Oceans of Archaeology' volume bids welcome to a vast submerged prehistoric world that, as yet, is unfamiliar to most people. The chapter outlines the book’s background and defines its scope and content. The submerged cultural heritage of the European and eastern Mediterranean countries presented in the book is of a richness and diversity so far unmatched anywhere else on the globe. It results from the systematic and far-sighted efforts that generations of enthusiasts, both professionals and amateurs, have invested in collecting, surveying and recording.

Vor knapp zwei Monaten stieß Vedran Dorušić, Tauchlehrer auf der Insel Pag nahe Zadar, auf einen interessanten Fund von Holzbalken und Keramik im kleinen Hafen des Dorfes Šimuni, den er den Archäologen des Internationalen Zentrums für Unterwasserarchäologie in Zadar meldete. Die Archäologen untersuchten daraufhin die Fundstätte und unternahmen die erste Dokumentierung und Bestandsaufnahme. Ein Fischkutter, der über der Fundstätte ankerte, legte vor kurzem den in 2 3 m Tiefe liegenden Fundplatz von der darüber liegenden Sand- und
Steinschicht frei und deckte dabei etwa 40 aus dem freigelegten Meeresgrund ragende Holzpfosten auf, die in zwei oder mehreren Reihen angeordnet sind. Eine Vielzahl von überwiegend gut erhaltenen Keramikfunden aus der Vorzeit, aber auch aus römischer Zeit befindet sich um dieses Gerippe und in dessen Umfeld. Auf den ersten Blick
scheint die Konstruktion aus Holzpfosten höchstwahrscheinlich mit der Keramik aus der Bronzezeit in Verbindung zu stehen, die in der gleichen Schicht entdeckt wurde. Die Fundstätte, die wahrscheinlich eine Siedlung oder ein Pier der Bronzezeit war, erfordert eine angemessene Rettungsgrabung.

Die Insel Veruda ist ein beliebtes Ferienziel der Einwohner der Stadt Pula (Kroatien). Im Herbst 2013 führten Archäologen des Internationalen Zentrums für Unterwasserarchäologie (ICUA) in Zadar einen Survey im Umfeld dieser Insel durch. Dabei wurde eine Ansammlung von Ballaststeinen, unter denen sich Teile einer Schiffskonstruktion zeigten, entdeckt. Neben vielen archäologischen Kleinfunden stellte sich heraus, dass das Wrack in einem relativ guten Erhaltungszustand war. 2016 wurde das Veruda-Forschungsprojekt vom ICUA gemeinsam mit der Römisch-Germanischen Kommission des Deutschen Archäologischen Institut (RGK) und der Fakultät für Informatik/Mathematik der Hochschule für Technologie und Wirtschaft Dresden (HTW Dresden) gestartet. Ein völlig neues System der digitalen Dokumentation wurde entwickelt und im Frühling 2016 angewandt. Die gesamte
Holzkonstruktion wurde aufgedeckt und ein sehr genaues 3D-Modell einschließlich Zeichnung mittels Structure from Motion erstellt. Während der Freilegung wurden zahlreiche Artefakte gefunden und es scheint, das Schiff trug eine Ladung Metallschrott, geschmolzenes Kupfer und Halbfabrikate aus Kupfer und Bronze. Einige Scherben nachmittelalterlicher Keramik- und Glassachen können in die 2. Hälfte des 16. und den Anfang des 17. Jhs. datiert werden.
