Roman Limes

This paper represents a review of the description of the state of Trajan ́s
Bridge, at the beginning of the 18th century. A record of the state of this
monumental construction, with certain drawings, has been made by the
Italian count Luigi Ferdinando Marsili from Bologna, who took part in the
military service of the Habsburg monarchy. Apart from the description of
the remains of the construction itself, my idea, as of a historian, is to
present count Marsili ́s versatile personality, with a special emphasis on
his tendency for interdisciplinarity in the scientific sense, as well as his
erudite skill combined with his unusual sense for description. It is
important to take these traits into account when studying his monumental literary work
"Danubius Pannonico - Mysicus", where the above - mentioned descriptions can be found.

Among different spheres of daily life led by Roman soldiers in the forts along the Danube Limes, one of the important ones was the sphere of spiritual culture, beliefs and religion. Although with the process of Romanisation, the official pantheon of Roman deities was introduced to the indigenous population, with the building and development of the defence frontier system on the Danube and Roman legions and auxiliary units who were stationed there, came soldiers of different origin and pro-venience, who brought with them their own religious beliefs and deities. Epigraphic and archaeological monuments found in the Danube Limes localities testify to the degree of acceptance or resistance of the autochthonous inhabitants towards different Roman, Hellenised and Oriental cults and show some very interesting examples of syncretism of the mentioned cults with unknown, indigenous gods and goddesses.

The interaction between the military and civilian center of Nijmegen and the surrounding Batavian area is highlighted from three aspects: 1) topography and monumentality, 2) monetizing, and 3) the use of animals. The last topic focuses on the concepts of production, distribution and consumption of larger animals, both in terms of their significance for food supplies, secondary products such as leather, wool and manure, and for transport and traction.

Omdat het merendeel van de locaties in de UNESCO werelderfgoednominatie van de Romeinse Limes in Nederland onder het maaiveld liggen, hebben musea een grotere rol in de publiekspresentatie van de Romeinse Limes. De International Council of Museums stelt voor om met storytelling landschap en museum aan elkaar te verbinden. Er mist echter een rol voor bestaande, historische (reis)verhalen in deze communicatievorm. Juist historische reisverhalen kunnen een unieke kijk in de complexiteit van toeristische presentatie bieden. Nijmegen, de toekomstige Limeshoofdstad van Nederland, kent al een lange traditie van reisbeschrijvingen over de Romeinse tijd. In dit artikel kijk ik daarom naar de rol van de Romeinen in zulke negentiende-eeuwse reisbeschrijvingen, om die te vergelijken met de presentatie van Romeinen in hedendaagse reisbeschrijvingen over Nijmegen.

In dit onderzoek staan de zogeheten bankiersmerkjes op in Nederland gevonden Romeinse munten (zilveren denarii) centraal. De betekenis van de letters is niet bekend. Ook is de functie tot nu toe niet verklaard. In dit verslag geef ik hiervoor enkele suggesties.

Este volumen es el resultado del trabajo realizado, durante varios años, por el grupo CEIPAC consistente en el estudio del material anfórico hallado en la Colonia Ulpia Traiana (Xanten, Alemania). Se han estudiado más de dieciocho mil fragmentos de ánforas hallados en las excavaciones realizadas en la ciudad a lo largo de casi un siglo, lo que ha permitido definir el comercio de alimentos que se estableció entre una ciudad de la frontera renana y las regiones del Mediterráneo. Junto al análisis del material hallado en la ciudad, se presenta el estado actual de la investigación de cada uno de los tipos anfóricos y se pone a disposición del lector, junto a la información puntual sobre la presencia de un determinado tipo anfórico, una información general que le permite contextualizar mejor los datos obtenidos. La obra tiene dos aspectos diversos: uno, el que se refiere al estudio del lugar concreto de hallazgo de nuestras ánforas, lo que permite ayudar a datar algunos estratos arqueológicos y a estudiar la distribución espacial de las ánforas en la ciudad. El segundo aspecto, más interesante a nivel general, es haber delimitado qué productos vienen de qué zona del Mediterráneo, en qué momento y en qué proporción. En síntesis, podemos concluir que existe una corriente de comercio entre todas las regiones del Mediterráneo y la ciudad de Xanten en época julio-claudia, y que a partir de época Flavia las relaciones comerciales se intensifican y casi se convierten en exclusivas entre Xanten y las provincias romanas de Gallia e Hispania. Lo cual conduce a una discusión sobre el significado de la influencia del estado romano en la distribución de productos alimentarios, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta la población militar de la región. Además, se presentan claves para el estudio de las redes comerciales entre Germania y las provincias mediterráneas, se discute el camino entre el Mediterráneo y la frontera, y se defiende la importancia de la ruta atlántica en contraposición a la vía del Ródano, que, tradicionalmente, se consideraba como la más importante.

Lime plaster and mortar are pyrotechnological materials that have been employed in constructions since prehistoric times. They may nucleate as calcite and/or aragonite under different environmental settings. In nature, aragonite and calcite form through biogenic and geogenic processes that lead to different degrees of atomic order. The latter is a result of defects in the crystal lattice, which affect the properties of crystals, including their interaction with infrared light. Using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) with the KBr pellet method, it is possible to exploit these differences and assess the degree of atomic order of aragonite and calcite crystals and thus their mechanisms of formation. Here we use FTIR to characterize the degree of short-range atomic order of a pyrogenic form of aragonite recently observed in experimental and archaeological lime binders. We show that pyrogenic aragonite has a unique signature that allows its identification in archaeological sediments and lime binders of unknown origin. Based on these results, we developed a new FTIR-based method to assess the integrity and degree of preservation of aragonite and calcite when they occur together in the same material. This method allowed a better assessment of the diagenetic history of an archaeological plaster and finds application in the characterization of present-day conservation materials, such as lime plaster and mortar, where different polymorphs may nucleate and undergo recrystallization processes that can alter the mechanical properties of binders.

The northern limes part of Valéria province was one of the regions of the Roman Empire that was most densely built with camps, watchtowers and bridgeheads. Between 1988 and 2003 a rectangular, fan-shaped small fort with corner towers was unearthed there. The fort was presumably built during the reign of Constantine II; it was rebuilt by Emperor Valentinianus and served as a fort until 430 AD. Its population was extended several times, first by the civilian residents of local settlements, then by barbarian soldiers arriving from the east. The present paper presents the material found in the I. room of the northern wing. The emphasis can only be explained by the quantity of the material, since the composition of the objects or the vessel-forms cannot be separated from those found in different wings, what is more, there is clear connection with the ceramics of the N/III. room. The majority of the material consists of late Roman shapes: hard burnt ceramics (78,5%), impressed decorated vessels (10%) and glazed ceramics (5%).
These are present in the life of all late Roman age forts and it is difficult to date them inside the second half of the 4th century AD (ceramic groups I-II.). The appearance of group II. of the impressed ceramics, yellowish-white in colour with ribbed surface or scratched ornaments
homemade ceramics, or granular hard-burnt glazed vessels represent a typical group at the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries (groups IIa-III.) Inside room N/I. based upon both the layering and the ceramics, one can separate the layer of the age of the construction (12,6%), the ceramics
of the rebuilding (34,6%) and finally the material of the upper scree layer (52%). The number of vessels typical at the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries is the highest in the upper scree layer, and their number decreases as one gets deeper (chart 2.) Inside the N/I. room, it is only the presence of glaze-dotted vessels and glaze clots that suggests local production, that also proves the manufacturing homemade glazed ceramics and impressed ceramics simultaneously.
At the same time, there is considerable resemblance with the ceramics unearthed in forts (Tokod, Dunabogdány) and watchtowers (Leányfalu, Pilismarót-Malompatak) in Dunakanyar during the Valentine age but still in operation in the first third of the 5th century.
