Practice theory

Dieses Kapitel fragt danach, wie der Blick auf Praktiken und Praxis für die empirische Forschung genutzt werden kann, und bietet einen Überblick über verschiedene sozialwissenschaftliche Operationalisierungen. Hierzu zählen bspw. der methodologische Individualismus (Werlen), der methodische Situationalismus (Knorr Cetina), die transitive Methodologie (Schäfer), eine Praxeologisierung des Blicks (Schmidt) oder zyklische Verfahren zwischen Datengenerierung und Reflexion wie etwa in der Grounded Theory. Darüber hinaus stellt sich die Frage, wie mit der praxistheoretischen Grundannahme umzugehen ist, dass nicht nur empirische Forschung, sondern konsequenterweise auch jegliche wissenschaftliche Theoriebildung als Praxis verstanden werden muss. Eine Antwort darauf ist der Anspruch an die Forscher*innen, ihre Positionalität zu reflektieren. Hierzu reichen aber gesellschaftlich fixierte soziale Differenzkategorien nicht aus. Ebenso genügt auch nicht eine Reflexion der professionellen Perspektive, die man in Ausübung des Berufes als Wissenschaftler*in einnimmt. Eine angemessene Reflexion schließt vielmehr die konkreten Situationen und Positionalitäten, die im Forschungsprozess hervorgebracht werden, mit ein. Darüber hinaus stellt dieses Kapitel die Konsequenzen dar, die sich daraus ergeben, wenn man Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung konsequent als Praktiken begreift. Methoden, verstanden als Praktiken, werden erst im Vollzug existent und dabei auf eine von vielen potentiellen Möglichkeiten fixiert. So kann es weder die eine »richtige« Ausführung einer Methode geben noch ein durch diese Methoden gewonnenes »wahres« Ergebnis. Forschende, Beforschte, Methode sowie Ergebnis bringen sich gegenseitig situativ hervor und konstituieren sich nur im Vollzug des Forschens. In diesem Sinne ist die Fähigkeit zentral, Methoden adäquat an die jeweilige Forschungssituation anpassen zu können.

Intersektionale Ungleichheiten verweisen auf strukturelle Diskriminierungen, die durch Mehrfachzuschreibungen von Identitätskategorien wie Geschlecht, Klasse, Ethnizität u.a. entstehen. Die kritische Weißseinsforschung offenbart eine Hegemonie des Weißseins und das Missverhältnis, durch das gender oftmals als Metakategorie allen anderen Differenzen überordnet wird. Damit haben beide Formen der Kritik und der mit ihnen verbundene politische Aktivismus ihre Berechtigung im Kampf gegen die Reproduktion diskriminierender und marginalisierender Praktiken, wenn sie daran arbeiten, langfristig grundlegende kulturelle Repräsentationsregime zu verändern. Doch gibt es auch Grenzen dieser Kritik. Die Autor*innen beschreiben Situationen, in denen diese Kritik wenig zielführend oder gar emotional verletzend ist, und markieren dabei die jeweils situative Angemessenheit von Kritik. So wird eine Grenze immer dann überschritten, wenn die Anerkennung des Gegenübers als Person infrage gestellt wird. Eine Kritik, die die eigenen Kränkungen zum Maßstab erhebt, ist unsolidarisch, wenn sie nicht danach fragt, ob sie noch das Erleben anderer Betroffener abbildet. Ebenso sollte sie sich versichern, dass Betroffene ihren Aktivismus noch als der gemeinsamen Sache zuträglich ansehen. Für die Verletzung der Würde einer Person ist nicht allein die empfundene Kränkung dieser Person maßgeblich, sie manifestiert sich vor allem dann, wenn dieses subjektive Empfinden von anderer Seite nicht wahrgenommen und respektiert wird.

Dieser Beitrag identifiziert den Mehrwert praxeologischer Ansätze für die Geographie. Er skizziert zentrale Perspektiven und Theorieansätze der praxeologischen Debatte, wie sie sich in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften etabliert haben. Darüber hinaus diskutiert der Beitrag grundlegende Impulse und Perspektiven einer weitergreifenden Philosophie der Praxis und leitet daraus analytische, erkenntnistheoretische sowie wissenschafts- und gesellschaftspolitische Implikationen ab. Anhand einiger Beispiele werden wir zeigen, wie verschiedene Theorien in geographischen Arbeiten aufgegriffen wurden. Zusammenfassend werden wir Möglichkeiten einer praxeologisch inspirierten Neufassung »traditioneller« geographischer Orientierungen wie Empirienähe, Planungsaffinität und Regionalkompetenz diskutieren. Auch zeigt dieser Beitrag, dass sich mit einer praxistheoretischen Perspektive nicht nur die Forderung nach einer kritischen gesellschaftspolitischen Haltung erfüllen lässt, sondern dass sich unterschiedliche Auffassungen von Kritik aus verschiedenen praxeologischen Zugängen hinsichtlich des Verhältnisses von Theorie und Praxis ergeben. Dementsprechend bietet dieser Beitrag auch eine detaillierte Diskussion der Frage, wie verschiedene kritische Theorieansätze ihren Bezug zur Praxis formulieren.

An ethnography is both a process and a product. As a process, it involves everyday interactions, comprehensive experiences and local knowledge. As a product, its result is a written text intended to encourage a scientific and universalistic understanding. Starting with two ethnographic sketches, in this paper we focus on the contrast between these two diverging logics which are inherent in the anthropological task, exploring the conceptual vacuum that appears as the researcher translates embodied practices into analytic categories.

Practice turn marks an important advancement in International Relations theorizing. In challenging abstract meta-theoretical debates, practice theorizing in International Relations aims to get close to the lifeworld(s) of the actual practitioners of politics. Scholars from different positions such as constructivism, critical theory, and post-structuralism have critically interrogated the analytical framework of practices in international politics. Building upon these works, we are concerned with a question of how to examine the context of international practices that unfolds in multiple ways in practitioners’ performances. Our central thesis is that a distinct pragmatic methodology offers an opportunity to keep with the practice turn and avoid the problematic foundational moves of mainstream practice theorizing. This involves foregrounding three interrelated processes in examining practices: the role of exceptions in the normal stream of performances, normative uptake of the analysts, and the semantic field that actors navigate in political performances. We argue that this methodology is predicated on its usefulness to interpret practices through reflective social-science inquiry.

La crise des États-nations face aux migrant·e·s, comme la réactivité publique par rapport aux enjeux de justice sociale concernant les groupes minoritaires, participe à faire de l’hospitalité un sujet criant. Pourtant, la notion ne génère elle-même aucune polémique et ne fait que rarement l’objet de remises en cause. Ce mémoire apporte un regard critique sur ce qu’est l’hospitalité et sur les manières dont elle est pratiquée. À cet effet, l’étude du phénomène est menée à partir du point de vue des privilèges des hôtes plutôt que de celui de la vulnérabilité des personnes accueillies. D’abord, il s’agit de mettre en perspective les acceptions vertueuse, principielle et pratique de l’hospitalité dans les publications savantes. L’hospitalité est ensuite définie en tant que pratique de l’accueil par le biais de ses trois modalités (spatiale, sociale et procédurale), lesquelles proviennent des façons dont l’hospitalité est la plus fréquemment problématisée dans les discours savants (autour du chez-soi, de la figure de l’étranger et des multiples actions qui sont censées composer l’accueil tel que l’hébergement, l’invitation, le soin, etc.). Puis, il est question des manières d’accueillir spécifiques relatives à la frontière, au seuil, au camp et au refuge. L’œuvre Las reglas del juego / The Rules of the Game (2000 ‒ 2001) de Gustavo Artigas permet de révéler que les limites de l’hospitalité font de l’accueil une affaire d’admission conditionnelle (frontière) ou un enjeu d’adaptation à autrui (seuil) en résonnance avec l’idée d’accessibilité. Le projet État d’Urgence (1998 ‒ 2010) de l’ATSA permet quant à lui d’interroger l’accueil sous l’angle de l’inclusion sociale. Tantôt, l’hospitalité devient synonyme de mise à l’écart d’un régime d’oppression (camp), tantôt du refus de collaborer au dit régime en son sein même (refuge). En somme, le dialogue entre les écrits savants et les œuvres d’art participatif dévoile les relations de pouvoir dans l’accueil qui sont à même de définir l’hospitalité, sa visée opportuniste et ses effets incertains.

This article discusses, from a philosophical perspective, two recent art historical debates about Dutch seventeenth¬century art. With the help of the American philosopher Theodore Schatzki’s practice approach, both the iconological debate, in which Eddy de Jongh and Svetlana Alpers are the main antagonists, and the debate about the methods and presuppositions of the Rembrandt Research Project are presented in a new light. It is shown that in both cases the traditional and essentialist conception of meaning of works of art still plays a fundamental but problematic role. Schatzki’s theory makes it possible to go beyond this essentialism and to further academic art history, by offering a new framework for research. In this framework, the meaning of works of art is strongly connected to the function they have in social practices.

This article presents a new interpretation of Guido Reni’s Abduction of Helen from a practice theoretical perspective. This perspective entails that the meaning of a work of art is related to its function in a ‘social practice’, rather than as an intrinsic or essential property it somehow possesses. The starting point of the discussion here is the essentialist concept of meaning which forms the basis of Anthony Colantuono’s interpretation of Reni’s Abduction of Helen. However, Reni’s Abduction of Helen had different functions, and therefore meanings, in three distinct social practices. In the diplomatic practice it could be used as reference to both the virtuous and immoral actions that are related to the Trojan War. In the painting practice it was used to affirm the status of the painter as a liberal artist and of the profession of painting as a liberal art. And in the literary practice it was an ‘excuse’ for poets to enter in a literary competition. The consecutive interpretation of the plural meanings of Reni’s Abduction of Helen with the help of a practice approach can be used as an example for future art historical research, and presents a step beyond the search for singular meanings that have dominated traditional art history this far.

Der Aufsatz verfolgt das Ziel, einen theoretischen und empirischen Beitrag zur Soziologie der Kompetenz zu leisten. In Auseinandersetzung mit praxistheoretischen Ansätzen wird argumentiert, dass sich Prozesse der Kompetenzproduktion nicht in einem Demonstrieren körperlicher Fertigkeiten erschöpfen. Sie beruhen vielmehr auch darauf, dass das Tun im Hinblick auf seine normative Angemessenheit beurteilt wird. Das Potenzial einer solchen Perspektivierung wird zunächst anhand körper- und sportsoziologischer Studien vorgeführt. Diese fokussieren allerdings zumeist auf Tätigkeiten, in denen die Kompetenzproduktion primär bei den kommunikativen Dimensionen sozialer Praktiken ansetzt: Kompetenz wird gezeigt. Die Atemarbeit, eine körperorientierte Therapie- und Selbsterfahrungspraktik, stellt vor diesem Hintergrund einen theoretisch instruktiven Kontrastfall dar. Sie zeichnet sich durch Bewegungsarmut und eine Kultivierung leiblicher Selbstbezüglichkeit aus. Es gerät eine alternative Form der Kompetenzproduktion in den Blick, die gleichsam an den Rändern des Kommunikativen operiert: Kompetenz wird erspürt. / The paper provides a theoretical and empirical contribution to the sociology of competence. Building on practice theory approaches, it is argued that the enactment of competence is not limited to the demonstration of bodily skills. Rather, it is also based on an evaluation of practice with regard to its normative appropriateness. The analytic potential of such a theoretical approach is subsequently demonstrated by reference to studies in the sociology of the body and sports. These, however, mostly focus on activities in which competence production primarily concerns the communicative aspects of social practices: competence is displayed. Against this background, a contrasting empirical case is presented: breathwork, a body-oriented therapy and self-experience practice which is characterized by a lack of movement and the cultivation of bodily self-awareness. Thus, an alternative form of competence production that operates at the margins of communication comes into view: felt competence.

ABSTRACT While knowledge theorists give attention to knowing in practice, two common habits in the empirical literature, which we call knowledge inherency and skepticism, serve to re-center certain practitioners. The sites in which we study knowing thereby remain limited, hindering a fuller practice turn. We argue that this enduring tendency is problematic because it inhibits our understanding of ‘communicative knowledge’ – a form of knowing central to the contemporary economy. Yet communicative knowledge is persistently relegated to secondary status through a logic that is simultaneously gendered and classed. We thus suggest a more thorough shift toward the study of ‘knowledge in work’ (Thompson et al., 2001), wherein such a priori associations are suspended, and all practitioners de-centered, in the interest of understanding specific forms, systems, and relations of knowledge entailed in situated practices of knowing. The second half of the article develops specific empirical strategies for doing so. The strategies are meant to enable grounded analysis of knowing practices in various lines of work to interrogate how these may be different to practices with which we are more familiar, as well as inquiry into similarities between these familiar practices and new ones in order to destabilize the link between knowledge and certain practitioners.

ABSTRACT The chapter aims to bring out the dynamic nature or hierarchy in organizations and presents a conceptual framework for making sense of hierarchy in contemporary work. We describe hierarchy as the result of a contradictory dynamic that incorporates both vertical and horizontal practices of organizing. The vertical practice, verticalization, draws on and reproduces the formal organization, whereas the horizontal practice, horizontalization, orders people on the basis of their knowledge and initiatives. The dynamic between these two practices varies, we argue, depending on the social and epistemic distance of formal managers’ from the operative work process. Three different dynamics between verticalization and horizontalization – loose coupling, translation, and integration – are identified and illustrated, drawing on three ethnogra- phically inspired studies of knowledge work. Through these three dynamics, the chapter casts light on and provides nuances to the current discussion in the literature on postbureaucracy.

Rasant verbreitet sich im Zuge der Digitalisierung der Wille, alltägliches Geschehen nicht nur im Spektrum der Worte, sondern in Form von Zahlen zu dokumentieren. Im Kontext von Diabetes und Quantified Self analysiert Lisa Wiedemann in dieser Studie das sogenannte Self-Tracking als medizinisch indizierte und als „selbstinitiierte“ Praxis. Dabei werden die Vermessungspraktiken empirisch als veralltäglichte, selbstbezogene und verkörperte Praxis in den Blick genommen. Zur Diskussion steht, wie Self-Tracking in den Alltag übersetzt und in Interaktivität mit technisch-materiellen Akteuren im (in)stabilen Vollzug bedeutsam gemacht wird.
