As Cliff Bleszinski [6] states in his blog post the video game community has its own type of religious police charged with enforcing a doctrine regarding gender representation within the gaming community. From the difficulties faced by Anita Skareesian to the resignation of Jennifer Hepler, women who are visible within the industry regularly face threats from the very people who claim to be their entertainment comrades. With the rise of the #1ReasonWhy hashtag on Twitter in 2012, the experiences of women who aren’t in gaming community’s spotlight were also brought to the forefront. This paper uses a thematic analysis of tweets made between November 26th - 29th in the #1ReasonWhy to examine how the explicit and implicit threats of violence, rape, and harassment have manifested within the working world of game development. Through examination of these tweets the authors will show how these threats both from the general gaming community and inside the office workspace shape the experiences of women and continue the decades long cycle of limited participation by women. The authors point out how the cultural dialogue about the potential good games offer to our society may be outweighed by the hostile community

The Scene of Foreplay: Theatre, Labor and Leisure in 1960s New York suggests foreplay as a theoretical framework for understanding a particular mode of performance production. That mode exists outside of predetermined structures of recognition in terms of professionalism, artistic achievement, and a logic of eventfulness.

Foreplay denotes a peculiar way of working and inhabiting time in performance. It is recognized as emblematic of a constellation of artists in the 1960s New York scene, including Ellen Stewart, John Vaccaro, Ruby Lynn Reyner, Jackie Curtis, Andy Warhol, Tom Eyen, Jack Smith, and Penny Arcade.

Matching an original approach to historical materials and theoretical reflection, Palladini addresses the peculiar forms of production, reproduction, and consumption developed in the 1960s scene as labors of love, creating for artists a condition of “preliminarity” toward professional work and also functioning as a counterforce within productive economy, as a prelude where value is not yet assigned to labor.

The Scene of Foreplay proposes that such labors of love can be considered both as paradigmatic for contemporary forms of precarious labor and also resonating with echoes from marginal histories of performing arts, in a nonlinear genealogy of queer resistance to ideas of capitalist productivity and professionalism. The book offers much for those interested in performance theory as well as the history of theater and performance arts in the 1960s.

Die aus den Spielhallen der 1970er- und 1980er-Jahre bekannten Arcade-Automaten boten den Spielern zu diesem Zweck eine sogenannte Highscore-Liste, welche die besten erspielten Ergebnisse – meist auch mit Namenskürzel – für die Nachwelt festhielt. Die Spiele der in den 1980er-Jahren aufkommenden Heimkonsolen (u. a. von Atari, Sega, Nintendo etc.) besaßen zwar entwicklungsbedingt noch typische Arcade-Merkmale wie Highscore-Listen, führten jedoch den angestammten Verwendungszweck ad absurdum, da die erspielten Punktzahlen lokal verortet und flüchtig waren. Zeitgenössische Spiele schaffen wieder einen Rückbezug auf dieses verloren geglaubte Feature, indem der öffentliche Raum der Spielhalle in den virtuellen Raum des Internets ausgeweitet wird und die Spieler dort ihre – nunmehr virtuellen – Trophäen, sogenannte Achievements, einer viel größeren Gemeinschaft präsentieren können: Ehre und Ansehen werden dadurch in höchstem Maße amplifiziert. Das Internet wird zum Archiv für unzählige ,Spielhallen‘ mit unendlich vielen virtuellen Profilen, deren erspielte Punktzahlen – im Gegensatz zu ihren flüchtigen Vorgängern – auf ewig zur öffentlichen Bewunderung in einer Datenwolke vorhanden sind. Dieser Beitrag zeichnet die historische Entwicklung der Highscore-Liste als typischem Retrogaming-Merkmal nach – unter Berücksichtigung der Frage, welchen Stellenwert Highscores für den Spieler haben können.
