Auditory resources can make learning more effective for a diverse array of learners. While some interest has been expressed in exploring the impact of verbal auditory resources (e.g., speech or word pronunciation) on learning, few studies have been conducted on the role of nonverbal auditory resources (e.g., sound effects or instrumental background music). This quantitative study examined the impact of verbal and nonverbal auditory resources via a multimedia presentation for explicit foreign language (FL) vocabulary learning. This within-subjects, quantitative study exposed 216 Polish native speakers to new, counterbalanced English words. We compared the effectiveness of four learning conditions in which words were equipped with verbal and/or nonverbal auditory resources: (1) pronunciation, (2) sound effects, (3) pronunciation plus sound effects, or (4) no audio (control condition). A one-way repeated analysis of variance revealed that vocabulary with nonverbal auditory resources (i.e., sound effects) was associated with significantly higher scores compared with vocabulary with no audio. Vocabulary with verbal auditory resources (i.e., pronunciation) alone or with the combination of verbal and nonverbal auditory resources (i.e., pronunciation plus sound effects) showed no 2 significant differences from the condition with no audio. Both immediate and seven-day delayed posttests confirmed the positive learning impact of sound effects. Gamification is the application of game features, mainly elements of video games, in a context not related to the game in order to promote motivation and commitment to learning. The application of gamification in a pedagogical context provides some remedy for many people who feel alienated from traditional teaching methods. The use of gamification could provide a partial solution to the decrease in the motivation and commitment of the students that the user faces today. Specifically, the younger environment could benefit greatly from gamification not only for its enjoyment but also for a healthy life. This critical analysis of gamification literature wants to be part of a sequence on the effect of gamification on motivation and commitment. A methodology proposed in the study of the effects of gamification in motivation and commitment, as well as an empirical study, consists of a smartphone application that provides tracking and gamification elements. While the control arm consists of on an application designed identically only with the characteristics of tracking health information. Journalistic photos in online mass media are displayed with the aim of strengthening and visualizing the contents of the news. Therefore, journalistic photos in the newspaper have a role in involving feelings and arousing the emotions of readers. The aim of this article is to show the usefulness of a Social Semiotics approach proposed by Kress and van Leeuwen in analyzing advertising discourse to achieve the aim of uncovering the ideology behind choosing different resources (verbal and non-verbal). The result of this study revealed that social semiotic reference occupies a pivotal point in the relationship between advertising discourse and ideology. Within the discourse analysis, semiotics identifies how signs are used to represent something. In the discourse of advertising, it can be a wish, need, desire or a worry to be solved, for instance.

The use of digital games and gamification has showed potential to improve many aspects of how businesses provide education and communicate with consumers. Nevertheless, there is still a requirement for better considerate of how the adoption of games and gamification would influence the process of decision-making for customer and organizations across different industry. This article provides a structured review of existing literature on the use of games in the business ecosystem, and seeks to consolidate findings to address research questions regarding their perception, proven efficiency, and identifies key areas for future business. The findings highlight that serious games can have positive and effective impacts in multiple areas of business, including education, decision-support, marketing and consumer outreach. They also emphasize the challenges and pitfalls of affecting serious games and gamification principles within a business context, and discuss the implications of development and evaluation methodologies on the success of a game-based solution.

Multisensory experiences have been increasingly applied in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In recent years, it is commonplace to notice the development of haptic, olfactory, and even gustatory displays to create more immersive experiences. Companies are proposing new additions to the multisensory world and are unveiling new products that promise to offer amazing experiences exploiting mulsemedia-multiple sensorial media-where users can perceive odors, tastes, and the sensation of wind blowing against their face. Whilst researchers, practitioners and users alike are faced with a wide-range of such new devices, relatively little work has been undertaken to summarize efforts and initiatives in this area. The current paper addresses this shortcoming in two ways-firstly, by presenting a survey of devices targeting senses beyond that of sight and hearing; secondly, by describing an approach to guide newcomers and experienced practitioners alike to build their own mulsemedia environment, both in a desktop setting and in an immersive 360º environment.

I use the Conceptual Blending Theory to discuss the application of familiar music themes in unexpected contexts, where the music assists the image and text in swaying viewers’ opinion. A new interpretation emerges in such examples after two-tier conceptual blending. The musical themes initially integrate with the original (visual) context in listeners’ long-term memory, creating stable blends with predictable connotations. In the changed context, these blends become inputs in a new integration process, where the creators consciously play with listeners’ expectations: either by enhancing them, creating what blending theorists call the vital relation of analogy, or by disappointing them, creating the relation of disanalogy. I therefore integrate insights from cognitive linguistics and musicology in discussing the persuasive potentials of music.
