Medieval numismatics

In 1967 in Grodziec (Złotoryja district) the hoard of 492 silver coins was found. Coins were concealed in a ceramic vessel, 15.5 cm heigh and 12 cm in diameter of the bottom. The hoard consisted of Polish, Bohemian and German groschen and half–groschen as well as of two Gdansk shillings. From all coins found, 484 coins were identified and described, and the whole hoard was discussed and published in 1969 by Professor Marian Haisig in Wiadomości Numizmatyczne. However, during the museum query, which took place on 7 April 2016 in the Museum of Archaeology in Wroclaw, in the box containing the Grodziec hoard an additional envelope was found. The envelope contained 173 Prague groschen, which belong to the original composition of the hoard but was not described till now.
In this newly discovered parcel, we recorded one groschen of Charles IV (1346–1378), 123 groschen of Wenceslas IV (1378–1419) and 49 groschen of Vladislaus II (1471–1516). The coins were generally poorly preserved. The reason why these coins were not included in the study, turned out to be surprising. According to an eyewitness account, after the Warsaw Pact troops invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968, Professor Haisig was forbidden to study most of the Czech groschen from the hoard.
There was one Prague groschen of Charles IV in the parcel. It represents Pinta V.a/1 type, struck between 1370 and 1375. The following coins are Prague groschen of Wenceslas IV, which were assigned to 12 from 15 basic types according to J. Hána. There are coins of Hána types from I to X, XIV and XV. Hána XV is the youngest from basic types and was struck from 1415 until the king’s death in 1419. The last group of coins are Prague groschen of Vladislaus II. They were assigned to 11 from 26 types according to J. Háskova. The biggest population is type XI (15 specimens) from the years 1479–1494 and type XIII (8 specimens) coined between 1502 and 1509.
Marian Haisig had dated the hoard with the Polish half–groschen of King Alexander (1501–1506) to the years after 1501 but before 1506. Having discussed the Prague groschen of Vladislaus II from the newly revealed parcel, we tend to move slightly these tpq and taq. Types Hásková XIII, XVIII and XX date back to the years 1502–1509. This moves the dating of the whole find at least one year. In this case tpq can be defined as 1502, and the hoard would have to be concealed not later than in 1509. The composition of the Grodziec hoard, when taken as a whole, is a bit surprising and it differs from other contemporary hoards. The hoard from Grodziec provides interesting information about the circulation of the groschen coins in Silesia in the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Prague groschen dominated and played the role of a strong currency. A large percentage of German groschen should be noted. They appear in Silesia in increasing numbers from the time of the significant debasement of Bohemian coinage in the mid-fifteenth century. We can see also, that Polish coinage, the rate of which was not stable, also served in neighbouring countries as means of thesaurization.
In the Appendix, the coins from the first parcel of the hoard are described, which were omitted or incorrectly described by M. Haisig. Three countermarks of Osnabrück were distinguished on German groschen (see Appendix, nos. 6 and 8). Moreover, all Prague 268 groschen of George of Poděbrady (1469–1471) have been assigned to the Hásková type I.c/1 and two Prague groschen of Wenceslas IV were reconstructed from fragments. Last but not least, the extremely rare groschen of the county of Henneberg was identified. It was struck during the rule of William IV (1444–1480) in Schleusingen in the years 1458–1464.

Die Reiseabrechnungen Wolfgers von Erla, 1191 bis 1204 Bischof von Passau und 1204 bis 1218 Patriarch von Aquileia, gelten in der germanistischen Forschung auf Grund der darin enthaltenen, einzigen zeitgenössische Erwähnung Walthers von der Vogelweide als wichtige Quelle. In diesem Beitrag wird die italienische Reise des Bischofs im Jahr 1204 nach numismatischen Gesichtspunkten untersucht. Dabei wird der Frage nachgegangen, welcher regionalen Pfennigsorten sich die Reisegesellschaft jeweils bediente. Die aus der Quelle abgeleiteten Währungsgebiete und Wertverhältnisse geben so einen Einblick in die Währungslandschaft Italiens im frühen 13. Jahrhundert.

This paper is split in two. In the first part I am presenting the legislation regarding the production and legislation of counterfeit coins in Dalmatian and Croatian sea towns during the medieval and early modern age. In the second part I am showing some examples of counterfeit. Such approaches help forming an idea on methods, actors and motives of coin counterfeit.

Lo studio ricostruisce a grandi linee i rapporti tra mercanti toscani e ragusei che operavano nel Regno di Napoli e documenta l’ingente coniazione di gigliati postumi nella zecca di Napoli durante il regno di Giovanna II d’Angio`-Durazzo. In base a diversi elementi e confronti preliminari, viene proposto un tipo di robertino quale modello per questo periodo.

The study reconstructs the relationships between Tuscan and Ragusan merchants, who traded in the Kingdom of Naples, and it documents the massive minting of posthumous gigliati in the mint of Naples, during the reign of Giovanna II of Anjou-Durazzo. Based on several elements and preliminary comparisons, a type of robertino is proposed as a model for this period.

L’étude reconstruit grosso modo les relations entre les marchands de la Toscane et de Dubrovnik (Raguse), qui opéraient dans le royaume de Naples, et il documente aussi le considérable monnayage de gillats posthumes, frappe´s dans l’atelier de Naples, pendant le régne de Jeanne II d’Anjou-Durazzo. Suivant plusieurs éléments et comparaisons préliminaires, on propose enfin un type de robertino comme modéle pour cette période.

L’esistenza della zecca angioina di Lucera è stata sempre stata messa in dubbio dalla letteratura numismatica storica (il testo più recente che vi si sofferma è RUOTOLO 2011), soprattutto per via dei pochi esemplari giunti fino a noi. Nel presente articolo, dopo aver compiuto un attento lavoro di ricerca archivistica, è stato trasposto un documento originale a firma di Ferdinando I d’Aragona nel quale viene perdonato il notaio Masio Pomentario per aver battuto moneta sotto Giovanni d’Angiò nella zecca di Lucera. Da ciò si può quindi dedurre che questa officina monetaria sia davvero esistita, e, nonostante ad oggi risultino noti pochissimi esemplari, probabilmente è stata attiva per buona parte del periodo della guerra fra gli Angioini e gli Aragonesi. Inoltre si cercherà di capire chi fu il notaio Masius Pomentarius e che ruolo avesse avuto nella vicenda, analizzando anche altri documenti, oltre alle monete prodotte in questo periodo nella città di Lucera.

Medieval coins from the hillfort near Mařín, Zadní Arnoštov and Křenov cadastral communities (Svitavy district). East Bohemia, Moravia, Early Medieval Period, High Medieval Period, denier, bracteate Hradiště u osady Mařín (okr. Svitavy), které se rozkládá na k. ú. Zadní Arnoštov (akropole a jižní před-hradí) a Křenov (západní předhradí), leží v kopcovité krajině mimo dlouhodobě osídlenou oblast v pro-storu mezi Svitavami a Malou Hanou. Této mimořádně zajímavé a-jak se stále zřetelněji ukazuje-velmi důležité lokalitě byla zatím odbor-nou veřejností věnována pouze okrajová pozornost omezující se v zásadě jen na popis terénních reliktů a vyhodnocování starých nálezů uložených v Městském muzeu v Moravské Třebové. Plošný archeolo-gický odkryv zde zatím proveden nebyl. Fortifikace a osídlení v jejím areálu bylo datováno do raného až počátku vrcholného středověku, a to do časového intervalu 9.-13. století s možnými počátky již v 8. sto-letí (Novotný 1971, 220). Teprve v relativně nedávné době byl zdokumentován řez při severozápadním okraji hradiště a při detektorovém průzkumu se podařilo získat železný hrot kopí, první přesně lokalizo-vaný nález z areálu; při této příležitosti došlo i na přehodnocení starých nálezů (Profantová-Vích 2008). V letech 2016-2017 proběhl na hradišti u Mařína povrchový archeologický průzkum s využitím de-tektorů kovů zaměřený především na zatravněnou akropoli a předhradí, stranou pozornosti ale nezůstaly ani další části lokality. I přes značné narušení terénu nelegálními uživateli detektorů kovů se zde podařilo vyzvednout kolekci kovových předmětů, které jsou důležité pro pochopení dění v tomto prostoru. Zá-roveň proběhla geofyzikální prospekce zatravněné plochy. Před celkovým zhodnocením lokality, které bude provedeno zvlášť pro středověk a (poněkud překvapivě) zvlášť pro protohistorické období, považu-jeme za nutné publikovat středověké mince získané v rámci zmíněného detektorového průzkumu. Všechny tři prezentované mince byly nalezeny na povrchu valů. Denáry krále Vratislava II. a markra-běte Vladislava I. Jindřicha pocházejí z vnějšího svahu z hloubky do 5 cm, ze šedé jílovitopísčité vrstvy představující nepochybně splachovou vrstvu. Brakteát Přemysla II. Otakara byl objeven na povrchu valu západního předhradí v hloubce 14 cm, prakticky při bázi tmavé lesní humusové vrstvy (obr. 1). Všechny mince jsou spolu s dalšími nálezy prozatímně uloženy v Regionálním muzeu ve Vysokém Mýtě, aby byly po zpracování předány do územně příslušného Regionálního muzea v Litomyšli.
