The word Periegesis derives from periēgeisthai, “to lead or show around”. This double sense of movement (through space) and description (of place) is to identify and reflect on not only how Pausanias describes and contemplates places and objects within them, but also the spatial organisation of his narrative theoria—how he relates places to each other and contemplates on their relation. While Pausanias represents a theoria of ‘Hellenism’ in the auspices of the Roman Empire, the books are especially informative in relation to space and cultural diversity. Pausanias, ‘inhabited an era when the notion of ethnic identity, particularly that of the Greeks, was in a state of ambiguity’,[5] as Greece was under Roman rule at the time. For our project (www.periegesis.org, funded for three years by the Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation) we aim to digitally annotate the text in order to trace, map, analyse and visualise Pausanias’s spatial theoria: his (re)imagining of Greece.

The Contrato de compra e venda do Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Melón, date back to 1231, that is under guard of the National Historical Archive in Madrid, Spain, has a crucial importance amongst the the remaining medieval Galician documental sources, being one of the most ancient romance written documents from the kingdom of Galicia that are preserved in its original manuscript. From the reproduction and comparison between the facsimile edition and two philological editions of the manuscript (SOUTO CABO, 2008; MONTEAGUDO; BOULLÓN AGRELO, 2009), we present some brief palaeographic comments and offer reading guidelines to the text.

O Contrato de compra e venda do Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Melón, de 1231, sob guarda do Archivo Histórico Nacional de Madrid (Espanha),  adquire uma indiscutível importância no conjunto das fontes remanescentes em galego medieval, por ser um dos documentos mais antigos escritos em romance no reino da Galiza que se conserva em seu manuscrito original. A partir da reprodução e comparação da edição fac-similar e de duas edições filológicas do manuscrito (SOUTO CABO, 2008; MONTEAGUDO; BOULLÓN AGRELO, 2009), apresentamos um breve comentário paleográfico e propomos um guia de leitura do texto.

À la fin du Haut Moyen Âge, plusieurs thèmes de l'iconographie chrétienne ayant trait à l'interprétation des scènes de l'Apocalypse montrent un plus grand recours aux motifs géométriques. Ces derniers se substituent aux éléments figuratifs caractéristiques des représentations de l'art paléochrétien. C'est particulièrement le cas des scènes tirées de la vision de saint Jean qui, étant investies initialement d'une signification ecclésiale, se voient conférer progressivement des connotations eschatologiques.

Апстракт: У раду се приказују промене које су визуелне шеме неких хришћанских представа, првенствено оних сачињених од геометријских фи-гура које су потицале из математичких и астрономских приручника, претр-пеле крајем раног средњег века. Веза која се у овој епохи успоставља између библијске иконографије и цртежа из научних рукописа нуди широко поље истраживања из многих перспектива. Овом приликом интересовање за дати феномен условљено је иконографским преображајима који су диктирани садржајем слика и њиховим новим есхатолошким тумачењима На почетку средњовековне епохе иконографски метод који користи небеске представе узете из астрономских и рачунских трактата односи се углавном на апока-липтички контекст виђења светог Јована Богослова, а међу њима су и оне које се анализирају у раду: представе Maiestas Domini и небеског Јерусалима у западној уметности од VIII до X столећа. Проучавање ових раних ико-нографских примера важно је због тога што се метод може применити и на друге теме из средњовековне верске уметности када је у питању истицање есхатолошке димензије представљених сцена. Кључне речи: хришћанска иконографија, апокалипса (откривење), есхатологија, астрономски и рачунски трактати, научни дијаграми, небески точак, илуминирани рукописи, Христос у величанству, Maiestas Domini, не-бески Јерусалим.

This essay claims that Chaucer's Knight fights in the siege of Algeciras, not in 1342-44 for King Alfonso XI, a Christian against Muslims, but in the last days of July 1369 for Sultan Muḥammad V of Granada, a Muslim lord, against fellow Christians.  How does it come to this?

Pramene stredovekej hudobnej kultúry sú základným zdrojom poznania najstaršej hudobnej produkcie z územia Slovenska. Predmetom najnovších výskumov je  24 stredovekých notovaných fragmentov zo Štátneho archívu v Trenčíne. Zlomky rukopisných kódexov, pochádzajúce z konca 14. až začiatku 16. storočia, dotvárajú komplexný obraz rukopisnej základne jedinečnej hudobnej kultúry stredoveku, ktorá na Slovensku utrpela značné materiálové straty. Veľké množstvo rukopisov bolo z rôznych dôvodov stratených, zničených, či odvezených do zahraničia. Z tohto dôvodu zastáva výskum, analýza a vyhodnotenie fragmentárnych materiálov z obdobia stredoveku špecifické a významné miesto.

Without aiming to provide an overall typology of medieval
rolls/scrolls, the contribution summarises the main questions which remain unresolved in relation to a format for which, in comparison with the codex and scrolls in Antiquity, a proper bibliological analysis is still largely lacking. Because of this, the systematic analysis applied extensively here to a significant range of medieval rolls/scrolls dating from various periods and belonging to different contexts and typologies
is of particular interest and significance.
