During the excavation of the Late-Roman villa next to the Nagykanizsa—Inkey sepulchral chapel, a few pottery fragments with burnished decoration were found in the pit 36.
According to their shape, most of these pieces were jugs and beakers, there was only one pot and one glass fragment among them.
The jugs belong to the so-called pear-shaped vessels, common in the 2and—4th century. With burnished decoration they can be found frequently in Late Roman cemeteries. The only pot-rim fragment pertains to a pot-shape which appears already in the LT D period. This shape was one of the most characteristic products of the potteries of Pilismarót and Carnuntum, working even at the beginning of the 5th century.
In the decoration motives of the Nagykanizsa material besides the most frequent horizontal and vertical lines the pine motive, the burnished triangle; the so-called Murga motive etc. also appear the obtuseangled lattice decoration, which is very common in Late-Roman burnished pottery, here only on 1—2 fragments occur. These vessels were produced by local workshops, the working activities of them can be dated by the appearance of burnished pottery in Pannónia. In Pannónia this pottery occurs in the forts alongside the limes as well as in the settlements inside the province and in their cemeteries. On the basis of the stratigraphie data we can state that its majority appeared in the last third of the 4th century. We may however relate it to ethnic groups only on the basis of grave furniture.
In one group of the graves besides the burnished pottery common finds of the Late-Roman period came to light. The graves of the other group, mostly isolated ones, according to their grave-goods, may be related to one the settled Barbarian peoples. This classification makes difference not only in respect of the ethnic groups, but of the chronology as well. Burnished pottery produced by the local, Nagykanizsa, population has appeared already in the first period of this pottery was used and later, too. It can not be fixed to a concrete date, probably it was used from the second ha'f of the 4th century to its end, or maybe to the first half of the 5th century.

Kadıkalesi/Anaia Kazısı’nda günümüze kadar yapılan çalışmalar sırasında karışık tabakalar içinde Geç Roma Kırmızı Astarlı seramikleri az sayıda amorf olarak bulunmuştur. 2013 kazı sezonunda kalenin güney eteklerinde yapılan Prehistorik dönemleri araştırmak için yapılan kazı çalışmaları sırasında, tümlenebilir parçalarında olduğu bir grup Geç Roma Kırmızı Astarlı seramikleri bulunmuştur. Bu seramikler içerisinde sığ ve yayvan gövdeli, ince cidarlı tabaklar bulunmaktadır. Yüksek ağız kenarları kasnak şeklinde olan bu tabaklarda, yayvan halka kaide görülmektedir. Geç Roma Döneminde oldukça yaygın olarak üretilen Roma Dönemi kırmızı astarlı sigillata kaplarının imitasyonu olan bu seramikler, geniş bir coğrafyada dağılım göstermektedirler. Kadıkalesi/Anaia buluntusu bu gruba ait seramikler Afrika Kırmızı Astarlı ve Foça Kırmızı Astarlı seramikleri içinde yer almaktadırlar. Seramiklerin form ve tipolojik özellikleri, İS. 5. yüzyıl sonu-7. yüzyılın başlarına ait olduklarını göstermektedir.

Late Roman Red Slip Pottery From Kadıkalesi/Anaia
ABSTRACT
In the excavations in Kadıkalesi/Anaia, some amorphous Late Roman Red Slip potters has been unearthed in different layers. In 2012 some pieces of the same kind of pottery were found in the south-eastern part of the fortress where excavations on Prehistoric past were carried out. Among them there were thin, shallow and splayed pieces of plates. This plates with high rimmed mouth, we find splayed circular base. Those ceramics that were imitations of Roman sigillata red slip and they are found in quite a widespread geography. What were found in Kadıkalesi/Anaia are considered to belong to the group of African Red Slip and Phokaia Red Slip pottery. Form and typology of the pieces point out the dates late 5th – early 7th century.

The ICRATES database currently includes 33939 diagnostic tableware sherds dated to the Late Hellenistic and Roman periods from 275 excavations and selected surveys throughout the Eastern Mediterranean (and a few sites beyond). The database aims to provide an open online comprehensive dataset of tableware evidence from the Roman East and this current version represents the majority of published information up to 2012 (it represents a snapshot of information that reflects the project’s data collection strategy and research aims, see Bes 2015 for a detailed description). It constitutes a key open resource for the study of the production, distribution and consumption of Hellenistic and Roman tableware in the Roman East and for the study of the Roman economy more broadly.

A distribution map of sites and surveys from which tableware evidence is included in the database. A few additional sites are included from the Western Mediterranean and further east up to India.

Tableware data of the following major wares with established typologies and chronologies is included: Eastern Sigillata A (ESA), Eastern Sigillata B (ESB), Eastern Sigillata C (ESC) / Çandarli ware, Eastern Sigillata D (ESD), Italian Sigillata (ITS), African Red Slip Ware (ARSW), Cypriot Red Slip Ware (CRSW), Phocaean Red Slip Ware (PRSW). The latter two wares (being recognised as one of multiple typologically related wares in a regional production) are increasingly referred to as Late Roman D (LRD) and Late Roman C (LRC) respectively. In addition, the database includes a large number of other wares with a less widespread distribution in the Roman East.

The database includes published information on the shape and decoration of each sherd, as well as a critical evaluation where possible by ICRATES team members of the typological identification. The site or survey where the sherd was recovered is recorded, including its geographical coordinates and references to the place in the Barrington Atlas and Pleiades where possible. Detailed published information on the archaeological deposit where the sherd was excavated or found is included, as is the bibliographical reference to where each sherd was published.

The first version of the database and the majority of data entry was performed in the framework of Philip Bes’ PhD research. When citing this online database, please also cite the following publication:
