Julius von Schlosser

The friendship between Dvorák and Wilde, and the Vienna School: the publication, comprising diverse letters, writings and other documents of art historian Johannes Wilde offers an insight in the everyday life of the Vienna School. It also sheds light on the little-known connections between the post World War I wave of emigration and the art patronising Austrian aristocrats (Count Lanckoronski, Khuen, Wilczek) on the one hand and the so-far almost overlooked profound, professional and personal  relationship between Wilde and Max Dvorák to which - on Wilde's part - we owe nothing less than edition, publication and interpretation of Dvorák estate in terms of history of ideas (Geistesgeschichte).

Julius von Schlosser non si interessava soltanto per le arte visive, ma studiava anche la cultura in senso più largo; era pure un bravo musicista dilettante che scriveva componimenti e suonava insieme al suo allievo Hans Hahnloser, in un quartetto d'archi. Nel 1920 Schlosser pubblicò un catalogo degli strumenti musicali esposti per la prima volta come collezione coerente nell'Hofmuseum di Vienna, descrivendo in esso le origini della collezione imperiale alla fine del Cinquecento a Schloss Ambrass, e nel Sei- e Settecento nella collezione Obizzi di Catajo. Scriveva anche il libro Unsere Musikinstrumente: eine Einführung in ihre Geschichte (I nostri strumenti musicali – un'introduzione alla loro storia) che appariva nel 1922. Raccoglieva pure una grande libreria sul soggetto, messo in asta dopo la sua morte. Allora, in questa soggetto di strumenti musicali, si incrociavano diversi aspetti di Schlosser come studioso, direttore del museo imperiale, ed amatore di musica nella sua vita privata. Questa relazione offre un primo sondaggio su come questi aspetti erano collegati tra di loro, e in che modo Schlosser seguiva in questo abbinamento di discipline il trend di collezionare e esporre strumenti musicali nel contesto Europeo nei primi decenni del Novecento, e soprattutto, come i sviluppi in questo campo in Italia avevano un effetto sul suo approccio, o invece no.

The paper aims to discover the career and the critical profile of Egidio Calzini, an art historian who actively contributed to the study of the artistic heritage in Romagna and Marches between 19th and 20th century. Following a diachronic order of his studies, the research underlines both his relationship with the rest of scholars of that time, examining unpublished sources, and his best discoveries, analyzing his publications. From the monography on Marco Palmezzano (1894) to direction of the specialized journal titled «Rassegna bibliografica dell’arte italiana» (1898-1916), the article defines his personality,
who contributes to the period of the art history in which started the current features of the discipline, both about conservation and research studies.

Il presente contributo sui “Teorici di architettura nella Letteratura artistica di J. von Schlosser” ha lo scopo di effettuare una lettura particolare del testo di Schlosser, attraverso gli occhi dello studioso di storia dell’architettura alla ricerca di informazioni sugli scritti teorico-tecnici in questo campo. Compito di questo breve saggio è quindi il rilevare quali trattati di architettura Schlosser citi, ma anche, ove possibile, che opinione abbia dei loro autori. L'articolo elenca perciò tutti i passi della Letteratura artistica in cui si parla delle fonti in campo architettonico dal Medioevo al Settecento. Sebbene Schlosser nella sua attività storico-critica non si diffonda su tale disciplina, nè compia particolari studi sugli architetti, la lettura analitica del suo manuale per le fonti della storia dell'arte consente di evidenziarne la sensibilità verso i testi e gli autori più significativi nella storia dell'architettura. Questa sintesi può risultare un comodo ausilio per gli specialisti, per rintracciare immediatamente se ci siano nel testo di Schlosser notizie sulle edizioni di talune opere teoriche di architettura e volgersi quindi alla lettura del passo che le riguarda.

The problems presented by recognition of cultural difference and alterity have long been recognized as presenting substantial challenges to traditional assumptions about the scope and limits of art history. This article examines some of the arguments that have emerged in relation to this issue, focusing in particular on ways in which anthropology and, specifically, the work of Alfred Gell, might contribute to debates. It argues that Gell's theory of the art nexus offers new possibilities for the cross-cultural study of art, which can be applied not only to the art of small-scale oral societies but also to Western art history. In so doing, it suggests that the art-historical engagement with anthropology should imply more than the promotion of difference as a value; rather, it suggests alternative methods of analysis that examine the role of art within social transactions.

By the late nineteenth century, reference to primary
sources was a common and even self-evident practice
in most areas of philological and historical study. In
1906 an enthroned statue of Kastalia, a Greek nymph
associated with the sources of truth and wisdom, was
installed upon a fountain in the very center of Vienna
University, which had been rebuilt from 1873 to 1884
(fig. 1). She embodied both historical and mythological
thought: a real wet source, a variation on the oftendry
historical sources of the scholars, supplemented
by references to wisdom, inspiration, and truth. Taking
the arcaded courtyard of Vienna University as its stage,
this paper considers the academic and intellectual
dimensions of this commission and points to the
structural violence and political implications of an
epistemological aporia, namely, the question of how
history might be “determined by its mythology,” to
paraphrase Ernst Cassirer. Before returning to postwar
interpretations of World War I, we will explore the
wet and dry aspects of source criticism in historical
scholarship.
