French Renaissance

A short general outlook of Budé's intellectual debt towards Angelo Poliziano, proven through Budé's antiquarian and philological works, for the Paris Nov. 2016 Symposium "La Réception d'Ange Politien en France au XVIe siècle". This paper follows and completes a former publication in 2015, "Per la ricezione di Poliziano in Francia" (Archivum Mentis 3, 2014, pp. 233-246), more focused on textual evidence.

Las rutas comerciales entre los diferentes territorios de la Corona de Aragón no sólo consiguieron facilitar el comercio entre ellos, sino que permitieron la movilidad de los profesionales de las artes a través de los diversos territorios. Es el caso de Pedro Pizarro, un cantero de ascendencia francesa que, asentado en el Bajo Aragón, pudo llevar a cabo una serie de encargos tanto en territorios de la diócesis zaragozana como de la tortosina, algo que pone de manifiesto la gran conexión entre estos territorios más allá de las fronteras artificialmente impuestas.
The commercial routes between the different territories of the Crown of Aragón not only facilitated the commerce among them, but they also allowed the mobility of art professionals among the different territories. This is the case of Pedro Pizarro, a quarry worker of French origin that, established in the Bajo Aragón, could accomplish a series of assignments in the territories of the dioceses of Zaragoza and Tortosa, something that brings to light the great conexion between these territories beyond the artificially imposed borders

Résumé

Notre paradigme actuel du discours vernaculaire en France pendant le seizième siècle est foncièrement coloré, d’un côté, par la poétique classique de la « translatio » dont la Pléiade s’est fait la championne, et de l’autre par des efforts plus académiques visant l’établissement d’une généalogie nobiliaire pour la langue française – entreprise liée surtout à l’imprimeur et helléniste Henri Estienne. Cependant, cette image reçue ne représente qu’une seule perspective sur la langue vernaculaire à cette époque. Le Recueil de Claude Fauchet, par exemple, témoigne d’un groupe de juristes et d’humanistes à Paris qui s’intéressaient avec animation et admiration à la poésie française médiévale. Cette haute estime pour la culture textuelle et matérielle du Moyen Âge français s’opposait directement au ton dominant du discours vernaculaire contemporain, lequel cherchait à se distancer du passé médiéval. Fauchet s’avère particulièrement notable à cet égard grâce à sa contribution fondatrice à l’histoire littéraire française, sa reconnaissance du rôle joué par les langues vernaculaires dans l’histoire, et sa sensibilité vers l’aspect matériel du passé natif de la France.

Abstract

Our current paradigm of sixteenth-century French vernacular discourse can be epitomised on the one hand by the classically inspired poetics of translatio propounded by the Pléiade, and on the other, by the scholarly efforts to establish a noble genealogy for the French language by writers such as the printer and Hellenist Henri Estienne. This picture however merely constitutes one of several contemporary narratives regarding the French vernacular. The Recueil of Claude Fauchet provides evidence of a lively and appreciative interest in medieval French poetry among a group of Parisian jurist-humanists, whose valorisation of medieval French textual and material culture was developed in direct opposition to the dominant tenor of contemporary vernacular discourse, which sought to break away from France’s medieval past. Fauchet in particular is notable for his seminal contribution to French literary history, his keen awareness of the role of vernaculars in history, and his sensitivity towards the material aspects of France’s native past.

L'hôtel Lallemant, pionnier de la première Renaissance française, a été probablement bâti entre 1497 et 1506. Son aspect originel n'est plus entièrement visible aujourd'hui du fait de modifications effectuées à la fin du XVIIe et au début du XXe siècles. Cet article fait l'inventaire de toutes les sources disponibles qui ont permis à l'artiste Jean Chen de réaliser deux essais de restitution de l'hôtel Lallemant sous forme d'aquarelles. L'extrait du livre est suivi d'une version annotée de cette recherche.

Comme chaque année, le collectif UniverSCité, qui a pour but d'ouvrir l'université sur la cité, organise une rencontre thématique, interdisciplinaire et trans-séculaire, dans les locaux de la librairie Mollat. Cette année, c'est le sang qui est à l'honneur : celui des médecins de la Renaissance, celui des hématologues d'aujourd'hui et celui des romans policiers!

In 1557 Louis Meigret (c. 1500 – c. 1558), a humanist and grammarian from Lyon, published a French translation of Albrecht Dürer’s treatise Vier Bücher von Menschlicher Proportion (Nuremberg, 1528) as Les quatre livres d’Albert Durer, peinctre & geometrien tres excellent, de la proportion des parties & pourtraicts des corps humains (Paris: chez Charles Périer). In the preface to the reader, Meigret brings up the polemic launched by the Reformed theologians regarding the function of art and the representation of divinity. These two pages attest to the liveliness of the debate on the legitimacy of representing not only religious scenes, but also the human body, a few years before the outbreak of the first of the Wars of Religion in France. The present contribution sets out to analyse the text to gain a better understanding of what is at stake in the light of the religious context, especially in Meigret’s circle, thanks to a comparison with the positions adopted by the two most influential theologians of the time, Martin Luther (1483–1546) and Jean Calvin (1509–1564).

Thanks to the counting of the contents of the five books De Asse and partibus eius(1515; seventh edition, 1541), which are added to some twenty-thousand quotations forming the Commentarii linguae Graecae (1529; final edition, 1548), it is now possible to substantially enrich the list of Guillaume Budé's (1468-1540) intellectual library, only a part of which is physically identified. It turns out to be a vast array, certainly to be better known later, when the contents of the two editions of Annotationes in Pandectas (1508 and 1526; final edition, 1535) will be fully studied, but already signaling Budé as a reader as voracious as encyclopedic, a good connoisseur of the classics, but above all a great explorer of the difficult texts of grammarians, theologians, jurists, agronomists and other authors, the so-called technici.
