In the 1980s, at Encinasola, Huelva, three inscribed sling bullets were discovered. They bore the praenomen and the nomen of Quintus Sertorius, the commander who led a revolt in Hispania against the Sullan regime in the 70s B.C., accompanied by the term proco(n)s(ul). Following other authors, in this article I will defend the view that Sertorius possessed a proconsular imperium as ex-praetor of the Cinnan government prior to the Sullan dictatorship, and that Sertorius was appointed magistrate of the two provinces of Hispania, and not only of the Citerior as has been held on occasion. Finally, I will explain how the legitimising message that the Sertorian side projected through the epigraphical field was based on the idea that its leader, in spite of the proscription decreed by Sulla, was the legitimate magistrate of the provinces Ulterior and Citerior.

This paper analyses the epigraphic itineraries undertaken through the western fields of Lisbon in the first half of the 16th century, as inferred from the Anonymus Neapolitanus and the Codex Valentinus, attempting to clarify questions of authorship , chronology and context. The main 'antiquarian spots' by then discovered and idealized in the vicinity of Lisbon are defined and described, in particular the sanctuary consecrated to the Sun and the Moon at the mouth of the river of Colares and the stone collection of the chapel of São Miguel de Odrinhas, both in the region of Sintra.

Resumen: El estudio de las termas públicas hispanas ha sido abordado principalmente desde el punto de vista arquitectónico e ingenieril, mientras que las inscripciones asociadas han sido tratadas como un vestigio histórico supeditado a los restos arqueológicos termales. En este trabajo analizaremos la distribución geográfica y cronológica de las inscripciones vinculables a conjuntos termales públicos en las provincias hispanas. Siempre que se pueda, intentaremos relacionar la epigrafía con el monumento en el que se situó originariamente, atendiendo tangencialmente a la estructura arquitectónica de los baños y su extensión cronológica por la península. También estudiaremos el origen social de aquellos personajes relacionados con los conjuntos. El análisis revela la extensión progresiva de las termas hispanas desde el siglo i a. C. hasta el ii d. C. y desde zonas costeras hasta el interior peninsular. Las termas públicas fueron parte esencial de toda ciudad hispanorromana, como elemento cultural exportado desde Italia y asimilado progresivamente en Hispania. Palabras clave: Epigrafía latina. Abstract: The study of the public baths of Hispania has been approached mainly from the architectural and engineering point of view, but the associated inscriptions have been treated as a historical vestige subordinated to the thermal archaeological remains. In this paper, we will analyze the geographical and chronological distribution of inscriptions that can be linked to thermae of Hispania. We will try to link the epigraphy with its original location, attending tangentially to the architectural structure of the baths and its chronological extension through the peninsula. We will also study the social origin of those characters related to the archaeological remains. This analysis reveals the progressive extension of this baths from the first century BC until second century AC and from coastal areas to the interior of the peninsula. The public baths were an essential part of the Hispano-Roman city, as a cultural element exported from Italy and assimilated in Hispania.

En el siguiente trabajo damos a conocer diez inscripciones de época romana conservadas en
la iglesia de la Asunción de San Vicente del Valle (Burgos). A pesar de su mal estado de conservación y
de la fragmentación de varias de ellas, todo ello derivado de su reutilización como material constructivo,
su  análisis  nos  permite  identificar  el  carácter  funerario  de  la  mayoría.  Su  lectura  e  interpretación
muestra, además, el uso de onomástica latina, así como de estructuras textuales y fórmulas funerarias
propias del hábito epigráfico romano.

The archaeological works carried out between the years 2008 and 2018 at the slope of the Cerro del Molinete (Molinete Hill) (Cartagena) have provided epigraphic fragments related to 26 Roman inscriptions dated between the centuries I and III A.D. Some of them contain references to magistrates of the Roman colony of Carthago Nova, and others are small fragments which probably belong to epigraphical plates, originally placed in a public urban location. Many of these documents are associated with the forum of the colony and its public buildings.

Este artículo es el repaso de una “duda razonable” (y razonada) sobre el origen de la ciudad romana de «EMERITA» (Mérida, Extremadura): ¿«IULIA» o «AUGUSTA»?; una introducción a un viejo debate sobre su fundación que inició la Doctora Alicia María Canto (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) en 1987. Desde entonces ha venido aportando múltiples pruebas sobre el posible protagonismo de Julio César en los orígenes de Mérida (la mayor parte no rebatidas por la postura académica a favor de Augusto). Por otro lado, intentando comprender su “nacencia”, advertimos el contexto viario que determinó su origen: una ciudad-puente como “consecuencia” (que no “arranque”) del «Camino de la Plata», un ancestral eje viario que facilitaba la rápida comunicación (comercial, militar, administrativa…) entre los extremos sur-norte del occidente peninsular. Ello fue gracias a una suerte de condicionantes físicos: un vado del Río Guadiana (que controlaba y del que se beneficiaba) integrado en una alineación aquí de pasos naturales (vados y puertos de montaña). Este estratégico itinerario fue clave en los inicios de la ocupación romana en las Guerras Lusitanas, antes y durante la reiterada presencia de Julio César en el occidente de «Hispania». Por tanto, la “teoría Iulia” de Alicia M. Canto no es descabellada (frente a la "teoría Augusta", más asentada), si atendemos a las pruebas que aporta, y al singular y privilegiado marco histórico-viario del enclave de «Emerita».

This paper critically reviews research into the cults of Mater Magna and Attis in Hispania, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, focusing on the processes underlying their establishment and on the agents that introduced them into the Iberian Peninsula. In contrast to the eager document collection and the Cumontian hermeneutics of the ‘oriental’ cults that have dominated historiography, the research questions posed here are tackled from the perspective of the new theoretical trends of individualization and agency. In concert with these, a new reading of the most ancient Metroac inscriptions from the the Iberian Peninsula is suggested.
