Corpus inscriptionum Latinarum

The search for inscriptions in Sardinia in the modern period stems from the
desire of Sardinian antiquarians to reconstruct local history through the help of epigraphic
documentation. In the 17th century, the purposes of counterfeiters were primarily to boost
the cultural and political primacy of both Cagliari and Sassari, to extol the close relationship between Sardinia and Spain, and to assert the Christian roots of Sardinian culture. In the 19th century , the main objectives were firstly to reinstate the island’s prestige and, secondly, to reinforce its role in the cultural landscape of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

En el presente artículo se editan algunas inscripciones inéditas de la provincia de Segovia; se ofrece nueva lectura de otras que ya eran conocidas; y finalmente se descatalogan tres inscripciones anteriormente editadas por ser tardías o renacentistas

En la primavera de 2017 se pudo constatar la existencia, junto a la entrada principal del cementerio nuevo de Galapagar, de lo que parecía la base de un posible miliario romano, aparentemente relacionado con el fragmento conservado en el calabozo del antiguo Ayuntamiento de Galapagar, que había sido descubierto en los años 70 del siglo XX. Finalmente, en octubre de 2018 se llevó a cabo una pequeña intervención arqueológica que permitió recuperar y estudiar esta pieza. Las conclusiones de ese estudio, así como la posible vinculación del miliario con la ruta 24 del Itinerario de Antonino, se exponen en esta comunicación.

In 2017 we found in Galapagar (Madrid), close to the new cemettery’s main entrance, what seemed to be the basis of a milestone, apparently related to the one preserved in the jail of the ancient Galapagar City Hall, which have been discovered during the 1970s. Finally, in october 2018, we developped a short archaeological research and we recovered and studied this piece. The main results of that research, and the posible relation between this new milestone with the route n. 24 of Antonine’s Itinerary are presented in this paper.

The inventory of the Art Collection of the Third Duke of Alcalá de los Gazules provides some epigraphic information. This article compares the information from this manuscript, dated in 1637, with the information known from the inscriptions exhibited in the Casa de Pilatos at this time.

A Latin votive stele from Moesia dedicated to six deities · This paper presents a new Latin inscription from the Antiquities market. The iconographical and textual study gives some clues to investigate its provenance. Due to the evidence, we propose a Balkan origin. It was probably made in the Roman province of Moesia. This inscription speaks about a dedication made by a magistratus of an unidentified town to Iuppiter Optimus Maximus, Juno Regina, Hercules Invictus, Liber, Libera, and Ceres.

The adscription into a conventus iuridicus of the western end of the province of Baetica has always been problematic. Likewise, the interpretation of the road XXIII of the Antonine Itinerary has been polemical. The archaeological rests associated to this road can be discarded due to new documents. All of this allows me to reformulate the areas of this road and to propose a new geographical com­prehension of the Huelva littoral in the Roman age.

A recently finished study of early Christian epitaphs that contain the term adiuro or coniuro to protect the tombs shows that ignoring these instructions would be penalized with a series of draconian punishments. Relevant curses and punitive formulas were borrowed from the Old and New Testaments. Inter alia the culprit should be punished by means of anathema, the eternal damnation. In recent years Konrad F. Zawadzki has intensively dealt with anathema in the literary sources of the early church and pointed out that the punishment was used in doctrinaire disputes against heretics. The use of the term in Latin inscriptions, which has not been studied so far, is the focus of this study. The eleven relevant inscriptions dating from the 6th to the 8th century are analyzed epigraphically and theologically. They are directed against moral offenses and point to a later expansion and popularization of the meaning of anathema.

This article deals with fake ancient inscriptions and aims at introducing the work of an ongoing collaborative research project, sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Education and titled "False testimonianze" ("Forged evidence"). The research focuses on a group of inscribed bronze tablets, which belong to the collections of different European museums. These artefacts have similar features: they are all inscribed on both sides, one of which usually carries the text of a plausible Latin inscription, while the other bears abbreviations that are often difficult to expand. Some of these objects have long been considered to be forgeries, while others are still displayed as genuine. Through a thorough analysis of intrinsic and extrinsic elements, I challenge the authenticity of these objects and trace their history from the moment when they were first attested. A number of unpublished and little investigated documents suggest that several inscribed bronze tablets already circulated in 18th-century Florence, where a celebrated Academy of Literati, named La Colombaria (literally, the pigeon-house), was created in 1735 for the sake of scientific and antiquarian curiosity. As a result, the forged tablets are not just to be dismissed as non-authentic documents, but should be considered the multifaceted product of a specific cultural context, which had developed a complex relationship with the ancient world.

Epitafium mieszkanki Rzymu, wyzwoleńcy, która nazywała się Allia Potestas, jak wiele podobnego rodzaju inskrypcji, odnaleziono w Wiecznym Mieście przypadkowo. W roku 1912 podczas prac związanych z budową garażu przy Via Pinciana robotnicy natknęli się na przepołowioną marmurową płytę. Wyłączywszy to uszkodzenie, stan zachowania obiektu okazał się bardzo dobry. Uwagę zwraca pięć otworów – dwa na górze i trzy na dole – które służyły do tego, by płytę przymocować do obelisku lub ściany w większym założeniu grobowym. Mogła wisieć również nad lub pod kolumbarium, w którym złożono urnę z prochami zmarłej.
Utwór na cześć Alii Potestas nie został opatrzony datą. Ze względu na kształt liter początkowo przyjęto, że epitafium powstało na przełomie III i IV w. n.e. Badania o charakterze stylistycznym i lingwistycznym pozwoliły jednak dopuścić możliwość stworzenia go już w II w. n.e. Opracowania o charakterze encyklopedycznym posługują się tymczasem asekuracyjnymi formułami, zgodnie z którymi inskrypcja powstała pomiędzy I i IV w. n.e.
