Das Bedürfnis, sich selbst, seine Umwelt und seine Handlungen visuell festzuhalten, hat sich bereits zu Beginn der Menschheitsgeschichte in der Höhlenmalerei gezeigt. Schon damals gab es Darstellungen, die Sexualität, Gewalt oder Kriege in den Fokus stellten. Nicht erst heute tritt mit der Darstellung von Personen und Handlungen aber ein Problem auf. Nicht jedem gefällt, was in Bildern zu sehen ist. Man kann streiten über die Darstellung: Ist diese gelungen? Ist sie akkurat, misslungen oder verfälscht? Oder man kann das Dargestellte selbst kritisieren. Darf man den Gegenstand so darstellen? Darf man ihn überhaupt darstellen? Gehen von der Darstellung negative Effekte aus? Damit beginnt ein Diskurs über Ethik.

Aufgrund der Dominanz der Bilder im Kommunikationsprozess muss der Umgang der Gesellschaft, der Medien, aber auch des Individuums mit ihren Bildern hinterfragt werden: Welche Art der Herstellung und der Veröffentlichung von Bildern kann mit welchen Darstellungen als sozialverträglich und damit als ethisch akzeptabel angesehen werden? Welche ethischen oder rechtlichen Grenzen werden eventuell tangiert oder gar überschritten? Die Thematik ethischer, moralischer und normativer Fragen der Bildverwendung, -aneignung und -wirkung wird aktuell aus verschiedensten Perspektiven und in unterschiedlichen Kontexten behandelt.

Zeigen | andeuten | verstecken. Bilder zwischen Verantwortung und Provokation widmet sich diesem Thema unter Bezug auf einen weiten Bildbegriff, da Bilder nicht erst in materieller Form relevant werden. Sie beginnen vielmehr in den Köpfen der ProduzentInnen und enden in den Vorstellungen der RezipientInnen. Dazwischen finden sich die Umsetzungen in Form konkreter, materieller visueller Gestaltungen – etwa als Fotografie, Zeichnung oder Grafik in Stand- oder Bewegtbild. Bilder zeigen dabei nicht nur Sachverhalte, Personen und Objekte, sondern übertragen mittels der Art und Weise der visuellen Darstellung und ihrer Ästhetik auch Gedanken, Visionen oder Phantasien. Immer haben Bilder eine kommunikative Absicht, zu der auch Provokationen und Aufmerksamkeit erregende Darstellungsformen gehören können.

Der vorliegende Sammelband stellt die unterschiedlichen Aspekte der Bildethik dar und zeigt die Diskurse auf, die sich im rechtlichen und ethischen Bereich stellen. Gleichzeitig bietet es Angebote, die für JournalistInnen, BildreporterInnen, aber auch im Bildungsbereich dazu beitragen können, die Kompetenz des Interpretierens und Verstehens von Bildern bei der Produktion und der Rezeption zu verbessern.

Marcel is a thinker who has generally been ignored in the field of rhetoric and philosophy of communication, but he is perhaps one of the most relevant thinkers at this moment in time, which is characterized by narcissism, materialism, and technological addictions. The impact of these obsessions is manifest in the overall rise in mental pathologies and generalized angst and cynicism. A fulfilling human existence, Marcel teaches us, must be sought outside of the technological mindset, in our lived experience with others and in a spiritual quest that protects the mystery of the human condition. The existential life that Marcel envisions as fulfilling is grounded in lived experience, flesh, communion, communication, and participation with others. Marcel does not fall prey to pessimism, despair, or cynicism, nor giddy optimism; he offers authentic hope that emerges through our struggles for meaning and engagement with fellow human beings and resistance to a technological society that wants to absorb our essence, stifle our being, enslave us, and disconnect us from ourselves (our bodies) and the world around us. Whether in the form of agape or philia, our intersubjective participation with others in the mystery of being is what makes existence meaningful.

This paper introduces readers to Jalâluddîn Rumi's work and contribution to the philosophy of communication. Rumi has been the subject of increasing interest in recent years because his poetry appeals to something that is not typically addressed in either academic scholarship or literary works. His poetry weaves many genres; it appeals to the senses and helps us find meaning and direction in the mystery of our life with others. While his particular religion is Islam, Rumi does not see religion as exclusive or restrictive. Love is what his religion is about. To love God is to express joy in our encounters with others, to show kindness and care to other human beings.  To be a human, for Rumi, is to engage in conversation with others, to seek unity and congruence from our encounters and being with others. It is in conversation with others, in the impassioned search for connection with others, that human beings find who they truly are, their purpose in life, beyond any ephemeral and superficial attachment to their egos. This type of connection cannot be found through the mind through cogitation, but through one’s attention to the senses and to the language of the heart that the search for unity can be sought though perhaps never totalized.

One of the challenges of a pervasive media presence is the effect it has on our understanding of what is good and bad. This is more so with respect to children who are beginning to consume mass media content at ages younger and younger. This study describes the media environment of middle and upper class, urban, educated and employed families, explores their ideas of what constitutes good and bad and how this affects their children.

In the social sciences, we often face normative questions, not least because many areas of inquiry intersect with public policy. Understanding and explaining media and communications is one task, deciding how communication systems should be organized quite another, but normative analysis receives scant attention. This article explores normative analysis: what is involved in answering questions about justice and communication, about how sociopolitical and indeed communicative
arrangements ought to be organized.

Against the impasse of despair in the public response to the refugee emergency, artistic interventions emerge to offer fleeting significant opportunities for restorative and reparative action. This article takes up conviviality as a conceptual tool to understand artistic interven- tions to the forced migration and asylum issues that variably aim for healing, empathy, and reflexivity. Drawing on comparative research consisting of interviews of artists in France, the United Kingdom, and the United States and textual analyses of their performances, we discuss specific motivations and diverse representational practices that aim to enact togetherness-in-difference. We discuss the poten- tials and risks of convivial artistic productions, which we argue pro- duce a politics of endurance that, as Feldman has said, helps “people live better with circumstances they cannot change.”

Values and norms for communication expressed in the ancient Egyptian treatise, The Teachings of Ptahhotep, are compared to current regulatory communication standards, especially the IFJ Declaration of Principles on the Conduct of Journalists, and to liberal and socialist ideologies. Ptahhotep argued in favour of basic equalities, respect, and the free flow of information and opinions, particularly for political speech, much like social democracy and political liberalism do. He also set limits regarding freedom of communication similarly: for hate speech, incitement to violence, defamation, invasion of privacy, and concentration of ownership. The parallels between the principles of communication ethics in ancient Egypt and today are partly explained with a look at similarly restructuring powers of innovative phonographic media (writing) then and prographic (electronic programming) media now, and partly with (probably indirect) influence. The article also asks whether the concept of ‘Western civilization’ should continue to exclude ancient Egypt.

Written by two communication scholars who came of age learning about the achievements of television audience studies and began their working lives at the birth of social media, this chapter offers reflection on their intellectual inheritance and heritage. Now engaged with various research addressing the social and ethical challenges posed by processes of datafication and disinformation, they discuss how key concepts in audience studies remain of urgent relevance. Focusing on the dialectically related concepts of divergence and responsibility, this chapter emphasizes how these keywords productively direct their scholarly energy to interrogate the opaque risks and vulnerabilities in contemporary technological transformations while accounting for diverse audiences' variable literacies to exert influence, read deceptive content, and demand recognition in mediated environments.
