This paper explores some of the myriad connections between geometric visuals, magic, and altered states of consciousness, more specifically looking at the colocation of geometric visuals and experiences of intermediary beings. The main focus here is on how geometric visuals relate to the consciousness experiments and magical practices of American author William Burroughs (1914–1997) and his Swiss-English collaborator Brion Gysin (1916–1986). Such an analysis will also dive into the broader intellectual currents that influenced Burroughs and Gysin’s uses of geometry, yielding more abstract conceptions of how geometry relates to altered states of consciousness and intermediary beings. Furthermore, understanding how geometric manipulation of the mind works has important consequences for multiple fields outside of the history of esotericism, including market-oriented disciplines like architecture and industrial design. As such, this essay proposes that the historical study of esotericism can promote and conduct itself as an interdisciplinary space that communicates the value of its data to market-oriented fields through “material approaches” to religion à la Birgit Meyer.

This article retraces some of the salient moments of
Jung’s and Dante’s encounters with the dead. It highlights the role the dead played in both Jung’s and Dante’s hard-won inner realization of the importance of becoming aware of the dead’s call and heeding their teachings. It also considers why both Jung and Dante followed to its end that forlorn path of self-realization and what we would gain, individually and collectively, were we willing to accept the gifts of liberating insight that, thanks to Jung’s and Dante’s mediation, the dead may share with our world: a dying world, whose only hope of survival paradoxically rests with the undying input that the dead have to offer us.

RESUMO O atual estágio de desenvolvimento do conhecimento tecnológico conduziu a humanidade às transformações profundas quanto às suas formas de se relacionar com o mundo, com o seu corpo e, inclusive, com sua própria mente. O conhecimento tecnológico possui um espaço sagrado e profano nas sociedades que herdaram esse saber: sagrado porque a tecnologia é vista como progresso para a melhoria e "salvação" da humanidade e profano porque a mesma tecnologia, no ritmo acelerado em que é criada, exige a quebra constante de tabus (normas). Neste trabalho, utilizaremos, como metáfora, a figura do Totem que é a representação da ancestralidade de uma coletividade: o Totem é um símbolo que carrega, em si, a história, os cultos e as normas de uma coletividade. No caso específico, estaremos tratando da ancestralidade tecnológica das sociedades ocidentais e, se possível, das não-ocidentais também. Para isso, partiremos de um mito: Prometheus como a base do Totem. INTRODUÇÃO Neste trabalho, tratamos de uma metáfora: a Metáfora do Totem do Conhecimento Tecnológico. Exploramos essa metáfora, abordando possíveis relações com diversos campos e disciplinas: Antropologia do Imaginário, Filosofia da Tecnologia, Mitologia e Semiótica. Nosso Totem do Conhecimento Tecnológico é uma imagem sígnica que pode ser relacionada à evolução tecnológica: trata-se de um mero esforço criativo e passível de críticas/revisões. Destacamos que os termos técnicos, aqui usados, são definidos no decorrer das partes do artigo. O problema, neste trabalho, é o seguinte: se o Totem do Conhecimento Tecnológico expressa uma imagem sígnica da evolução tecnológica, então como essa imagem é elaborada? Nossa hipótese é se existe um imaginário social sobre as diversas formas de conhecimento, então este imaginário social pode estar presente em sistemas de imagem-sígnica mais sofistticados. The Unconscious - This is the eleventh in a series of Jung-Lacan Dialogues aimed at fostering an engagement between two important and creative schools of psychoanalysis. What is the common ground between them? What are the intractable differences? Is it possible to find a common language or achieve mutual understandings? Partant de la question que le jeune Carl Gustav se posait sur “sa” pierre, « Suis-je celui qui est assis sur la pierre, ou suis-je la pierre sur laquelle il est assis ? », l'auteur tente de montrer que la notion d'identité se fonde, pour Jung, sur une indétermination choisie. Il en ressort une position éthique autant que méthodologique qui différencie sa démarche tant de la démarche freudienne que de celles des pensées orientales du bouddhisme et de l'hindouisme, tout en ayant de nombreux point commun avec elles. Il s'appuie sur les notions d'émergence et d'enaction (Varela) qu'il développe, arguant que la notion d'archétype, particulièrement du soi, mérite d'être réévaluée au regard de ce nouveau paradigme scientifique.

Starting from the question the youthful Carl Gustav pondered as he sat on ‘his’ stone – ‘Am I he who sits on the stone, or am I the stone on which he sits?’ – the author has attempted to show that, for Jung, the idea of identity is founded on a wilful non‐determination. This stance results in ethical and methodological repercussions that differentiate it both from the Freudian project and from Hindu and Buddhist thought, while at the same time having much in common with them. The paper refers to the notions of emergence and (Varela et al. 1992) enaction2 and argues that the concept of the archetype, especially in relation to the self, merits a re‐evaluation in light of the new scientific paradigm.

Il saggio ripercorre gli anni di formazione di Amelia Rosselli, seguendo due fils rouges che si dipanano dalla materia complessa delle sue raccolte poetiche: il tema della povertà e quello della follia. Strettamente correlati, essi danno conto di una riflessione filosofica e politica che, iniziata negli anni giovanili, viene rimeditata e ridiscussa nell’arco dell’intera esistenza. Sara Sermini indaga il contesto politico-culturale al quale si possono ricondurre le letture giovanili di Rosselli, così come le frequentazioni familiari connesse ai fautori delle “terze vie”, l’impiego presso gli uffici romani della Olivetti, la partecipazione alle attività promosse da Ernesto De Martino, l’amicizia con Rocco Scotellaro e, non da ultimo, l’incontro con il mondo della psicanalisi junghiana. Il ritratto di Amelia Rosselli da giovane è affiancato dall’analisi interpretativa dei suoi versi alla luce delle due tematiche indagate. Il volume è corredato infine da una lettera di Amelia Rosselli al fratello John, contenente due poesie inedite, e da alcune lettere, anch’esse inedite, al poeta Giovanni Giudici.

This essay examines Amelia Rosselli’s formative years according to two closely entwined themes that characterize her complex poetry: poverty and foolishness.This specific focus enlightens the political and cultural context in which her life and work are situated while shedding new light on her verses.The volume also presents a letter from Amelia Rosselli to her brother John containing two unpublished poems, as well as other unpublished letters to the poet Giovanni Giudici.

Literature and Modern Time is a collection of essays that explore literature in the context of a wave of challenges to linear conceptions of time introduced by thinkers such as Bergson, Einstein, McTaggart, Freud and Nietzsche.
