The Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg (JMU) holds about 1.200 coins, medals and para-numismatic objects from the 7th BCE to modern times with a focus on Greek and Roman coins. Due to the near complete destruction in World War II the coin cabinet in the Martin von Wagner Museum (MvW) is mainly build by donations after 1945 and by a few selected acciquistions. The the most important of those donations is the Coll. Herbert Wellhöfer – c. 400 classical Greek coins with an emphasis on iconography and aesthetics.

Musenkunst durchdringt weite Bereiche antiker wie auch neuzeitlicher Elitendiskurse. Musikkultur war ein Teil der Lebenswirklichkeit antiker und nachantiker Autoren. Sie prägte ihre Geschichtsbilder und Gegenwart mit. In literarischen Quellen wurde Musik implizit wie auch explizit bewertet und das Verklungene so für nachfolgende Generationen indirekt vermittelt bewahrt. Musizierende wiederum konnten mit ihrer Kunst nicht nur ein weites Publikum erreichen. Das Performierte überschritt immer wieder normative Grenzen. Musikkultur war und ist politisch und gerade im Schnittpunkt von Religion, Herrschaft sowie individuellen Handlungsspielräumen von immenser Bedeutung. Doch wie breit wurden die Musik kommentierenden Texte rezipiert? Wer kam mit ihnen in Berührung? Musische Münzbilder erreichen ebenfalls ein weites Publikum. Sie wirken über sprachliche, räumliche und religiöse Grenzen hinweg. Die kleinformatigen, teils millionenfach gefertigten und oftmals weitgereisten Repräsentationen von Musikinstrumenten sowie Lebensformen, welchen die musikē technē nachweislich begegnete, sind dabei nur die Spitze eines Eisbergs. Musikkultur und Numismatik/Geldgeschichte haben zahlreiche Berührungspunkte. Organisation und Finanzierung, Antrieb zum Schaffensprozess der Musizierenden, ikonographische Hinführungen zum Wissen von Musikkultur, Gestalt und bisweilen Funktionen/Kontexte von Musikinstrumenten, aber auch Mythen, historische exempla und religiöse Vorstellungen/Praktiken: Zu all diesen Feldern erlauben Münzen vielfältige Rückschlüsse. Das Ziel dieses Vortrags war es, zunächst wesentliche Dynamiken und ihre Kontexte im Verlauf der Antike zu überblicken, in denen sich Münzen und Musik besonders nahekamen. Die Erweiterung der Perspektive jenseits der scheinbar direkt musikbezogenen Münzbildthemen sollte schließlich dazu beitragen, das einstweilige Ende der ‚Musikmünzen' in der Spätantike neu zu fassen: Denn der numismatische Weg von Apollon zu David führte nicht gänzlich durch den Untergrund.

У статті порівняно грошовий обіг на теренах Вірменії в часи арабського володарювання (VIII–IX ст.) і царства Багратидів (кінець ІХ – середина ХІ ст.), відзначено зменшення ролі монетного обігу в останню епоху. Проаналізовано політичний вплив Візантійської імперії на кавказький регіон у Х–ХІ ст. та охарактеризовано передумови і причини початку самостійного монетного карбування грузинськими та вірменськими державами наприкінці Х – в середині ХІ ст., наголошено на прокламаційних функціях цих карбувань. Звернена увага на паралелі між християнськими державами Закавказзя і Руссю стосовно карбування монет.

The article compares the monetary circulation around the Armenian territories during the period of Arab rule (VIII–IX c.) and the kingdom of Bagratids (end of IX – middle of XI c.), arguing that the role of monetary circulation in the last epoch decreased. The political influence of the Byzantine Empire on the Caucasian region in the X–XI c. is analyzed. Preconditions and reasons for the beginning of independent coining by the Georgian and Armenian states at the end of X – in the middle of the XI c. are described, emphasizing the proclamational functions of these coinages.

The Conference is focussed on a particular category of coins, those that were deliberately cut into two or more portions while in circulation, so as to create two or more coins, in periods of insufficient supply by mints of smaller value coins. The phenomenon has been mainly studied for the late Roman Republic and the early Empire, but it is also widespread in other cultural areas and date ranges. There is a need to address the question of coin-cutting with up-to-date analytical methods, above all on the basis of the detailed documentation produced by the most recent stratigraphic archaeological excavations, which alone can provide reliable chronological indications. It also seems advisable to broaden the scope of the investigation as much as possible, both with regard to date (for example: late Roman, Byzantine, medieval and modern periods) and geographicalli speaking.

Early medieval coins individually lost at the Vraclav hillfort (Ústí nad Orlicí district). The collection of early medieval coins-extraordinary by its content and number-found individually at the Přemyslid hillfort Vraclav represents results of long-term surface examinations in the area. The coins help to date origins, developments and character of the hillfort during the 11 th and the 12 th centuries, and they bring answers for some questions of general character connected with the coinage of the mentioned period in the Bohemian history. Vraclav, denier, hillfort, Early Medieval Period Raně středověké hradiště Vraclav (okr. Ústí nad Orlicí) patří k důležitým, leč dosud stále málo poznaným raně středověkým lokalitám. Situace se však začíná v posledních letech měnit k lepšímu. Po zveřejnění záchranného archeologického výzkumu realizovaného na předhradí lokality v roce 2014 (Vích 2016) byl v rámci diplomové práce zpracován pro poznání lokality důležitý výzkum Ludvíka Skružného a Ladislava Hrdličky, probíhající v letech 1961-1963 v prostoru akropole (Kalíšková 2017). Podstatné informace o hradišti přináší průběžný detektorový průzkum, prováděný zde od roku 2006 Regionálním muzeem ve Vysokém Mýtě. Jedním z jeho výsledků je získaná kolekce raně středověkých mincí, jejichž prezentace a zhodnocení je úkolem této studie. Vlastní hradiště se nachází při samém hrotu Vraclavského hřbetu, který odděluje Litomyšlský úval, představující přirozenou komunikační spojnici Čech se severozápadní Moravou, od Chrudimské tabule, tradiční sídelní oblasti obývané lidmi již od pravěku (Demek-Mackovčin 2006 /eds./). Jedním z nejdéle osídlených míst je ostrožna sevřená hlubokými údolími na soutoku dvou drobných vodotečí, ležící poblíž dnešního jádra obce Vraclav (obr. 1). Již v době bronzové či nejpozději ve starší době železné zde vzniklo sídliště a snad i hradiště (Hrdlička 1966). Do nejvýznamnějšího úseku svých dějin však vstoupila lokalita v první polovině 11. století, kdy zde bylo vybudováno raně středověké hradiště, plnící až do počátku 13. století funkci jednoho ze správních, hospodářských a mocenských center vládnoucího přemyslovské-ho rodu na významné spojnici Čech a Moravy. Questo lavoro tratto in parte da un precedente articolo (Moretti 2017) e basato sugli studi di padre Giuseppe Valentini, cerca di far luce intorno ad un multiplo di denaro attribuito a Re Manfredi assegnato in via dubitativa alla zecca di Manfredonia o alla zecca di Corfù. Si spiegherà perché la moneta non poteva essere coniata a Corfù e che con buone probabilità fu coniata in Italia per la circolazione nel Regno dell'Epiro e che non circolò invece mai nel Regno di Sicilia.

This work, taken in part from a previous article (Moretti 2017) and based on the studies of Father Giuseppe Valentini, seeks to shed light on a multiple of "denaro", attributed to King Manfredi and assigned in dubious terms to the mint of Manfredonia or to the mint of Corfu. It will be explained why the coin could not have been minted in Corfu and that it was probably minted in Italy for circulation in the Kingdom of Epirus and that it never circulated in the Kingdom of Sicily.

In the numismatic collection of the Regional Historical Museum in Varna are kept eleven bronze coins with the information that they are a collective find from the territory of present day North-eastern Bulgaria. Ten of the coins are folles minted in the period 624-629 AD (the latest one which is exactly determined is from 627-628 AD).
At the moment there is no similar find published from the region of the Lower Danube, where the coins after 615 AD are rare as a whole. The small number of found bronze coins, which had been minted after the second decade of the VIIth century AD, probably is a result of a whole complex of reasons. Besides the limitation of the Byzantine power as a result of the multiple barbarian invasions and the settlement of the Slavic tribes, there were monetary changes during this age. Among the leading changes were the increased volume of silver minting after the introduction of the nominal hexagram in 615 AD, which to some extent reduced the need of a big quantity of bronze coins in the currency circulation. Another reason was the devaluation of the bronze coins after 615 AD, which was expressed in the decrease of their weight standards and decrease of their monetary value compared to gold and silver coins.
