Burial Practices (Archaeology)

On the edge of the coal mine of Amyntaio, Florina, part of a major cemetery was recovered in the site Anargyroi XI, over the remnants of a prehistoric settlement. At the eastern part of the area under excavation a small single aisled basilica, with some latter additions was found. The surrounding area was packed with almost 1000 pit type burials, mostly consisting of women and children. Inside the main temple solely a woman’s burial, along with some fetal remains was unearthed. Both the building and the cemetery probably date to the mid and late byzantine era (12th - 14th century).

Research on ancient Maya cities is generally focused on large paramount sites that had written records of the rulers' activities. However, these large cities are the exception, rather than the norm, since the majority of the urban sites consist of smaller settlements. Research at the archaeological site of Chan Chich recovered evidence of the development of a non-paramount ancient city. Excavations at the Upper Plaza, the site's main royal precinct, suggest large construction projects, including a large northern platform, nicknamed "Blanca", two smaller platforms at the northeast and northwest, likely topped by perishable superstructures whose use spanned the Late Preclassic and Early Classic periods. In addition to the expansion of monumental construction, the Upper Plaza was a focus of mortuary ritual for the Chan Chich elite during this time. Excavations in 1997 recovered a Terminal Preclassic royal tomb in the center of the plaza and our 2016-2018 excavations uncovered six interments containing eight individuals intrusive into Late Preclassic architecture, including another possible royal internment. In this paper, we examine the local urban tradition at the site of Chan Chich and how the construction of monumental architecture in the Upper Plaza articulates with the mortuary record in order to understand the process of placemaking undertaken by its leaders. We contextualize the construction sequence by comparison to other sites in northwestern Belize.

В результате археологических раскопок на сельских кладбищах Белорусского Подвинья XVII-XVIII вв. Жерносеково, Клещино, Дубровка, Илово выявлена практика детских подзахоронений в уже существующие могилы. При этом количество фрагментов керамики вне могил, интерпретируемых как поминальный инвентарь, превышает аналогичные находки на кладбищах, где детские подзахоронения не отмечены.

I våra arkeologiska magasin förvaras fynd från äldre arkeologiska undersökningar. Det kan vara fyndplatser från äldsta tider till nutid där bara några enstaka föremål eller gårdar och gravar visar att människor vistats där. Det är lätt att arkeologiska utgrävningar blir bortglömda om de har ett litet material och att de blir därmed okända för de människor som idag bor där arkeologer en gång grävde. De gamla grävningarna kan förbli osynliga också i den arkeologiska forskningen. I den här artikeln skall vi belysa några sådana platser i Kullabygden.

The ethnographic record indicates that disposal of the dead by leaving their corpses in the bush was once a widespread feature of mortuary practice in East Africa, practised by many Bantu as well as non-Bantu speakers. The following notes describe an interesting variation upon this practice, recorded (and still remembered) among different groups of Bantu speakers in what is now south-west Tanzania. Whereas most peoples known to have disposed of their dead in this way appear to have done so in any convenient spot away from habitation, the Sangu and others referred to below “threw away” their dead in particular sites designated for this purpose. These sites for communal disposal are recognisable by their common names and, though no longer used in quite the same way, are still feared through their association with death.

Le rapport ethnographique indique que le système de se débarrasser des morts en jetant leurs cadavres dans la brousse était à un certain moment une pratique funèbre très répandue en Afrique orientale chez la plupart des peuples bantu et même parmi d’autres qui ne parlent pas la langue bantu. Les notes qui suivent décrivent une variété intéressante de cette pratique enregistrée (et toujours en cours) chez les différents groupes parlant le Bantu dans ce qui est de nos jours le sud-ouest Tanzanien. Alors que la plupart de gens connus pour s’être débarrassé des morts de cette manière semblent l’avoir fait en un endroit convenable à cet effet loin des habitations, les Sangu et bien d’autres abandonnaient leurs morts dans des sites particuliers désignés pour cette cause. Ces sites où les corps étaient jetés en commun se reconnaissent par leurs mêmes dénominations et bien qu'ils ne soient plus utilisés de la même façon, ils inspirent toujours la peur car ils sont associés à la mort.

El Mausoleo que presentamos se encuentra en la dehesa del Gandul, y más concretamente, en el lugar denominado Las Canteras, en el término de Alcalá de Guadaira (Sevilla). Alrededor de la llamada Mesa del Gandul (elevación con gran potencia estratigráfica sobre la que se encuentra una ciudad romana junto a la vía que une Hispalis y Bassilippo) se extienden diversas necrópolis pertenecientes a distintas épocas y que han sido exploradas y dadas a conocer desde el siglo pasado por George Bonsor 1. En la actualidad una parte de la necrópolis se encuentra en zona militar, por lo que el Capitán General de la II Región militar, Excelentísimo Señor don Manuel Saavedra Palmeyro, aficionado a la arqueología, se puso en contacto con el Departamento de Arqueología de la Universidad de Sevilla para cooperar y facilitar cualquier trabajo arqueológico. De esta manera se hizo posible la excavación durante el mes de marzo de 1982.
