Basilica San Pietro

Il volume costituisce la prima monografia dedicata all’ultimo decennio di attività del Beato Angelico, ai due soggiorni dell’artista a Roma tra la fine del 1445 e la morte nel 1455. Sommo esponente della pittura quattrocentesca, il domenicano Fra Giovanni da Fiesole operò al servizio di due pontefici, Eugenio IV e Niccolò V, di un cardinale, Juan de Torquemada, e per la casa madre del proprio ordine, Santa Maria sopra Minerva,dove alfine fu sepolto in una tomba monumentale. Dei cicli di affreschi eseguiti dal pittore nella città dei papi, solo la Cappella Niccolina si è conservata, capolavoro artistico e manifesto ideologico della Renovatio Urbis. Nel volume sono ricostruiti in dettaglio la configurazione e i dati salienti anche delle opere perdute, dalla Cappella del Sacramento in Vaticano fino alle Meditationes nel chiostro della Minerva, attraverso fonti testuali e  figurative. Protagonista dell’Umanesimo cristiano, pittore teologo assimilato al Doctor Angelicus Tommaso d’Aquino, l’Angelico determinò, con Leon Battista Alberti, Bernardo Rossellino e Piero della Francesca, una svolta epocale nella Roma del primo Rinascimento.

The book is the  first monograph devoted to the last decade of the activity of Fra Angelico, who in the mid-fifteenth century marked a watershed in early Renaissance Rome. One of the leading representatives of Quattrocento painting, the Dominican friar Giovanni da Fiesole worked for two pontiffs, Eugene IV and NicholasV, a cardinal, Juan deTorquemada, and the mother house of his order, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, where he died and was buried in a monumental tomb.

Nel saggio, a partire da un corpus di lettere di Ludovico Sergardi conservato all'Archivio di Stato di Siena, prima ignoto agli studi storico artistici, non solo vengono approfonditamente ricostruite in tutte le loro fasi la genesi e la prima fortuna a stampa e nelle medaglie del Carlo Magno vaticano di Agostino Cornacchini (1720-1725), ma anche focalizzato il ruolo, tutt'altro che secondario, rivestito dal senese nella gestione per oltre un decennio delle principali committenze artistiche (da opere musive ad arredi marmorei, da imprese architettoniche a decorazioni plastiche) nella basilica di San Pietro.

The bronze funeral monument for Pope Sixtus IV (1471-84) by Antonio del Pollaiolo, now in the Museum of the Vatican Basilica was designed to be located at the center of a chapel, which explains its' apparent asymmetry: lack of height and large base. The complex composition of this masterpiece of bronze sculpture, places the Pope at the center of an inner ring with the personification of the virtues and an outer one with ten allegories of Art and Science. The restoration of the funeral monument started in May 2007 and has to be concluded in December 2008. The restoration was carried out by first making a series of non invasive readings using a transportable EDXRF and a portable Raman system, then mapping the deterioration processes that had altered the bronze surface. As a consequence of the first non invasive diagnostic campaign, a second campaign of micro invasive tests was planned and carried out. The samples were analyzed with SEM-EDS, NMR and XRD techniques. In this article some of the results of the tests will be shown together with the protocol of the procedures implemented to maximize the diagnostic information gathered and minimize the micro-sampling on works of art. In recent years it has become a common practice to use the event of the restoration of a masterpiece to unite the diagnostic process and the archaeometric study.

Ernst Robert Curtius, né en 1886 en Alsace, est renommé comme l’auteur de l’idée de littérature européenne. Il était critique littéraire dans les années 1920. De plus, il faisait des recherches sur la continuité de la rhétorique européenne pendant la seconde guerre mondiale. Le bulletin de recherches, Ernst Robert Curtius e l’identità culturale dell’Europa, est réalisé d’après un colloque international à Bressanone et Innsbruck en 2009, qui a été organisé par Ivano Paccagnella et Elisa Gregori de la chaire de philologie romane de l’Université de Padoue. Durant les vingt dernières années, les Italiens ont abordé Curtius avec enthousiasme, comme ce colloque le prouve. Ceci est le cinquième colloque international consacré à Curtius. En 2007 et 2008, Paccagnella et Gregori ont organisé des colloques sur d'autres grands romanistes allemands, Erich Auerbach et Leo Spitzer. Le nombre de participants a pratiquement doublé depuis. Ainsi, les 27 collaborateurs de ce volume ne sont pas nécessairement des spécialistes de Curtius. Ce bulletin de recherches a la particularité de discuter de l’idée d’Europe chez Curtius relativement à l'UE, le post-colonialisme et la mondialisation. On pourra y trouver une étude de la différence entre les sciences sociales et les aspects culturels dans les études sur l'UE, et une relativisation de l’eurocentrisme.
