This paper presents the review of historical and archeological perspectives on Sicily in the period of Vandals and Ostrogoths invasions, and Byzantine reconquest of the island, and includes new research (excavations and surveys) and archaeological artefacts discovered recently on archaeological sites Akrai/Acrae in southeastern Sicily. Sicily as the largest and centrally-located island on the Mediterranean Sea, rich in natural resources and playing a key role in political shuffles, was a natural crossroad of trading routes, a melting pot of diverse cultures. Therefore for many reasons it was a ring of various historical events, including Late Antiquity. Since end of 430 AD, after the Vandals conquered the lands of North Africa, island reentered the mainstream of history and became a disputed land and the main battlefield for the Vandals, Ostrogoths, and the Byzantine Empire, which did not leave its economy and population untouched. The political reshuffling and military actions were signalised in the literature mostly in the context of coastal towns of islands, but recent studies of material culture, settlement distribution and roads, show that it surely influenced the cultural landscape of the entire island. The paper also draws attention on the need to cross scientific disciplines (history and archaeology) which might be useful in solving elusive ancient problem and issues, in this case thanks to the archaeological material culture filling gaps in historical and written source sources associated with presence of Vandals, Ostrogoths and Byzantine Empire in Sicily, with particular interest of its interior.

Lo studio del mondo rurale tardoantico offre un contributo importante alla conoscenza delle dinamiche sociali, culturali e sociali. Lo sviluppo di nuove forme di religiosità trova riscontro anche nella documentazione archeologica relativa ai centri vicanali dell’Italia settentrionale. In questa sede si presenta una nuova rassegna dei casi archeologicamente documentati con un primo tentativo di costruzione di una tipologia.

Aim of the article is to explore the issue of adorments usage as the indicator of Sarmat etnocultural component in Chernyakhiv culture. Certain types of adorments of possible Sarmat origin that are found in Cehrnyakhiv burial complexes are analized in correlation with the standard ethnocultural indicators.

The article introduces materials from the new burial with weapons of Przeworsk culture discovered in Pidpechery village of Tysmennytsia district in Ivano-Frankivsk region. It was a cremation in urn that was carried out at a depth of 0.4—0.5 m. The thin-walled pottery pot (vase) was used as an urn. A small amount of calcined and cleaned of soot bones are preserved in it. Under the urn the warped spear, two spurs and fragments of a shield boos are found. Three times warped sword was put onto the urn. All these metal things were burnt. Analysis of the burial stuff suggests them to be dated to the end of С1а — beginning of С1b phase of the Roman period. Pidpechery tomb belongs to the group of Przeworsk military burials of Middle Dnister area that are mostly dated within C1 phase. They could originate because of the social and political processes which are connected with the cultural transformation in a region at that time, due to the development of new cultural formations of the Late Roman period in particular.

Artículo popular sobre el origen y las gestas del pueblo de los alanos, que invadió la Hispania romana, junto a vándalos y suevos, en el siglo V. La segunda parte trata de las causas y consecuencias de la derrota sufrida por los alanos ante los visigodos de Walia, de la unificación de los supervivientes con los vándalos de Gunderico, el éxodo via el Estrecho de Gibraltar, la conquista de la provincia africana, la creacion del Reino de vándalos y alanos y de su caida a manos de los bizantinos en el siglo VI.

Artículo popular sobre el origen y las gestas del pueblo de los alanos, que invadió la Hispania romana, junto a vándalos y suevos, en el siglo V. La primera parte habla de la trayectoria seguida por los alanos antes de su entrada en la panínsula, de su reinado en Hispania y de los posibles vestigios dejados por este pueblo guerrero en el territorio de España y Portugal.

In this article is dealt materials of the Chernyakhiv culture,
which were found during excavation in 2017. This site was inves-
tigated for the first time in 1973 by O.  M. Prykhodniuk. The site
is situated on the right bank of the river Ros, in the region rich in
sites of the Chernyakhiv culture (fig. 1—3). This season the inves-
tigations were in the two parts of the settlement: in the central
and in the south parts (fig. 3—4). In the south part was investi-
gated household object (fig. 5). There were a lot of wheel-made
(86.5 %), hand-made pottery (13  %) and animal bones. The bones
and the charcoal were also investigated (App. 1—2). Among the
wheel-made pottery were defined forms, which have analogies at
the Danube region (fig. 9; 13). Such forms were also in the cultural
layer of this settlement (fig.  14). This is a unique find for Chern -
yakhiv culture without direct analogies. The hand-made pottery
of this site belongs to the wielbark-przeworsk types (fig. 12; 13:
21—24).  Among  there  finds  were:  metal  comb,  spindlewhorls,
bone tool, pendants and others. The chronology of Chernyakhiv
site near Ostriv, based on the finds of fibulae and buckles from
cultural layer (fig. 15). They indicate, that the settlement exited
during all time Chernyakhiv culture (III—IV/V  AD.).

Este libro reúne una serie de estudios relacionados con las esferas del poder civil y eclesiástico en la Antigüedad tardía y la Alta Edad Media (ss. IV al IX) en la Península Ibérica y en Francia meridional. La finalidad de la publicación es dar a conocer de manera unitaria las novedades que en los últimos años se han producido en el conocimiento arqueológico de las ciudades y de sus territorios a través del urbanismo, arquitectura y de la topografía. Con el ánimo de contribuir al estado actual de la investigación, este libro contempla con perspectiva diacrónica el fenómeno de la arquitectura del poder como vehículo de prestigio social y máximo exponente de transformación de los paisajes culturales. Con apoyo de las nuevas metodologías arqueológicas y una revisión historiográfica crítica de investigaciones previas, los trabajos que integran esta monografía actualizan conceptos topográficos y modelos arquitectónicos como canal básico para comprender el impacto de la nueva organización social y económica de las aristocracias tardoantiguas en la concepción jerarquizada del espacio.

In meinem Dissertationsvorhaben befasse ich mich mit jenen Imitationen römischer Reichsmünzen, die außerhalb des imperium romanum hergestellt wurden. Dabei handelt es sich um Objekte, die sich in den meisten Fällen äußerlich gut von den originalen Vorlagen unterscheiden. In der Regel sind stilistische Abweichungen an den Darstellungen feststellbar oder etwa bei den Münzlegenden. Dafür, dass nicht von Fälschungen gesprochen wird, kann insbesondere aufgeführt werden, dass viele Imitationen leicht als solche zu erkennen waren, durch mehr oder weniger bewusste bzw. offensichtliche stilistische und ikonographische Abweichungen, weshalb die Stücke nicht in einer betrügerischen Absicht hergestellt worden zu sein scheinen. Dieses Phänomen möchte ich für den mitteleuropäischen Raum nördlich der Donau zwischen Wiener Becken im Westen und den Karpaten im Osten – auf den heutigen Staatsgebieten von Österreich, Ungarn, Serbien und Rumänien – einer Neubewertung unterziehen, da die Forschung für diesen Bereich im Großen und Ganzen dem Forschungsstand der 1920er Jahre zugrunde liegt, aber durch die verhältnismäßig gute Publikationslage und öffentliche Münzsammlungen ein Zugang zum Material gewährleistet ist. Betrachtet werden sollen vorrangig die ab dem 4. Jh. n. Chr. gerade in diesem Raum einsetzenden Imitationen der Solidi bis etwa in die Mitte des 6. Jahrhunderts. Der Großteil dieser Imitationen wurde durch Lochung oder das Anbringen von Ösen dem eigentlichen Geldverkehr entzogen – bzw. eher noch – direkt auf diese Art und Weise hergestellt und ist dadurch nie dem monetären Umlauf zugeführt worden, was darauf hindeutet, dass diesen Stücken eine ganz neue Bedeutung zukam. Zusätzlich zu den Imitationen untersuche ich das ebenfalls wenig beachtete Phänomen der subaeraten Solidi, die ich in einen ähnlichen Kontext, wie die Imitationen einordnen möchte.
Vergleichbar mit etwa Schmuck konnten diese Münzen am Körper, an Kleidungsstücken als Bestandteile der Tracht oder als Zier auf Waffen und der Ausrüstung getragen werden, wobei die mögliche symbolische Bedeutung für den oder die Träger sowie die Wirkung nach außen nicht unterschätzt werden sollte. Denn in nahezu allen Fällen sind die Löcher bzw. Ösen so gesetzt worden, dass die Vorderseite, und damit das Portrait des römischen Kaisers, zur Schau gestellt wurde. Eingebettet in den historischen Kontext und unter Einbeziehung der aktuellen Funde über das eigentliche Gebiet hinaus sowie eines anthropologischen Ansatzes, der über die reine numismatische Analyse hinausgeht und besonders den Aspekt beleuchtet, wie eigentlich nicht-monetäre Gesellschaften mit Geld bzw. Münzen umgingen, soll die Arbeit einen grundlegenden Beitrag zur Erforschung der Imitationen beitragen und die Transformation der Münzen vom ausschließlich monetären Zahlungsmittel zum Symbol der Macht nachvollziehen – in einer Welt, die sich im Kontext der sogenannten „Völkerwanderung“ selbst im raschen Wandel befand.

This paper analyzes the historical evolution of the strait of Gibraltar within the framework of the Vandal history from the moment this central-European population settled in the Iberian peninsula and until their African kingdom was destroyed. The aim is to provide an alternative reading to the meaning of this crucial geographical space from both a factual and a geopolitical perspectives during this period. In consequence, it is presented a new historical reinterpretation based on both the sources' testimonies and their silences.

Contrairement à l’Égypte et aux autres régions méditerranéennes,
les pays du Maghreb n’ont jamais fait l’objet d’un fort engagement
de l’archéologie allemande. Les recherches sur l’Afrique antique se
sont limitées à des études isolées, même si certaines, comme celles
que consacra Willmanns à la constitution du huitième tome du Corpus
Inscriptionum Latinarum, sont d’une importance certaine. Depuis les
années 1970, les seules activités remarquables dans ce domaine sont
les fouilles de l’Institut Archéologique Allemand de Rome à Carthage
et à Chimtou et plus récemment, celles des universités de Hambourg et
Fribourg à Carthage et à Dougga. Cependant, antérieurement à ces études récentes, une discipline particulière de l’archéologie allemande s’intéressait déjà de près à l’Afrique. Appelée ‘Frühgeschichte’, on peut la comparer à l’archéologie mérovingienne en France. Mal connues chez les africanistes maghrébins, ces études sur les royaumes barbares de l’Antiquité tardive sont néanmoins intéressantes, à la fois parce qu’elles participent de l’historiographie de l’Afrique ancienne en particulier, mais aussi parce qu’elles concernent l’histoire de la recherche archéologique en général.

Este trabajo trata de un episodio histórico que ha pasado casi desapercibido en las publicaciones recientes, sumergido quizá por los muchos otros procesos traumáticos que confi guraron el fi n de la Galia romana. Pero a nuestro juicio se trata de un suceso de esencial importancia, tanto para la fi gura del emperador Antemio como para los estudios sobre la Britania posromana. Alrededor del año 469 una fuerza expedicionaria formada por britanos desembarcó en el continente (posiblemente en Armórica) para enfrentarse a los visigodos de Eurico en alianza con Roma, tras ser llamados por el emperador. Pese a que el plan fracasó y Eurico pudo derrotar a los britanos antes de que Antemio u otros generales romanos lograsen unir fuerzas con ellos, el episodio es altamente signifi cativo. Riotamo, el líder de la expedición, ha sido vinculado tanto a la leyenda artúrica como al personaje de Ambrosio Aureliano, primer héroe de la resistencia britana contra los sajones. Esta alianza tardía, en una situación desesperada y próximo ya el colapso del Imperio en Occidente, abre nuevas y sugerentes vías en la investigación. Hasta cuatro fuentes literarias distintas recogen el suceso.
This work deals with a historical episode that has gone almost unnoticed in recent publications, perhaps submerged by the many other traumatic processes that shaped the end of Roman Gaul. But in our opinion it is an event of essential importance, both for the fi gure of the emperor Anthemius and the studies on Sub Roman Britain. Around AD 469 an expeditionary force formed by Britons landed in the continent (possibly in Armorica) in alliance with Rome, after being called by the emperor, to confront the Visigoths led by king Euric. Although the plan failed and Euric could defeat the Britons single hand before Anthemius or other Roman generals managed to join forces with them, the episode is highly signifi cant. Riothamus, the leader of the expedition, has been linked both to the Arthurian legend and to the character of Ambrosius Aurelianus, the fi rst hero of the Briton resistance against the Saxons. This late alliance, in a desperate situation and close to the collapse of the Empire in the West, opens new and suggestive research lines. Up to four diff erent literary sources relate the event.
