Petralona Cave early hominid skull and associated bones in a stratigraphic profile has been dated by U-Th series during 1980s.
The controversy that prevailed is due to the anatomy amongst others. In fact the shape of the back of a skull doesn't always predict the shape of the face. Dating travertines which sandwich bones as well as the suppposed calcitic cover of the skull have produced several ages all of which suggest a higher than 270 Kyrs age for this skull.

This chapter is based on the occurrence of charred plum pit dice in a Late Holocene burial in Mi'kma'qi, home of the Mi'kmaw. I reported on them in my dissertation (1996) but Dr. Barbara Voorhies invited me to contribute to a symposium on ancient games in North America at the SAA meeting in 2015. Subsequently, she published a book including my chapter, where I try to understand the role of plum pit dice during Late Woodland times in Northeastern North America, from a female perspective.

There is a consensus that gene flow characterizing modern Mainland Chinese arrived in Taiwan during the last 400 years, mostly from East China. However, primary genetic studies of ancient human remains of the middle Neolithic era, revealing inconsistencies between the archaic genes profile and that of modern Mainland Chinese, raised debates about the time of arrival of modern Chinese in Taiwan. To resolve this problem, this study focuses on the analysis of 3000 years BP human remains excavated from the Neolithic east coast archeological Ling-Ding site II near Hualien in Taiwan. The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) recovered from five archeological human remains was analyzed to elucidate their genealogy, and to characterize their genetic relationship with the present-day aboriginal and non-aboriginal people of Taiwan.
Five mtDNA haplogroups were characterized from the Ling-Ding site II skeletons, C4a2, N9a1, B4c1b2a, Z, and B4b. Except for mtDNA haplogroups B4c1b2a, commonly seen among the present-day central Taiwan Aborigines and scarce in the heavily sinicised Taiwan western plain tribes, all other haplogroups were common to urban Taiwanese and modern Mainland Chinese. It is proposed that a middle Neolithic gene flow, characterizing Modern Mainland East Asians, was introduced to Taiwan by settlers who reached the East coast of Taiwan in Hualien (Ling-Ting site II) and co-habited with Taiwan Mountain tribe Aborigines. The findings of this study may be relevant for the understanding of the middle Neolithic peopling of Taiwan by non-Austronesian speakers.

Abstract:

In July 25th of 2005,  a small group of “Taino” reclaimed the Caguana Ceremonial Center, in Utuado Puerto Rico, in the name of their ancestors demanding, “End the destruction and desecration of our sanctuaries, sacred places, archeological sites, coaibays (cemeteries) and ceremonial centers now!” The Taino had utilized the site for years to celebrate traditional rituals, but due to changes in the Center’s policies, were suddenly restricted from using the site during certain hours. For the Taino, this was the final straw in an ongoing and escalating patrimony conflict with the site managers, The Institute for Puerto Rican Culture, charged by the Puerto Rican Legislature in 1955 with the task of “conserving, promoting, enriching  and disseminating the cultural values of Puerto Rico”. The result was a 17-day occupation and hunger strike that brought to the fore issues regarding Puerto Rican identity that had long lay dormant and unchallenged.

El 25 de Julio, 2005, un pequeño grupo de “Tainos” reclamo a el Centro Ceremonial de Caguana en Utuado, Puerto Rico en nombre de sus ancestros indígenas demandando, “Paren la destrucción y profanación de nuestros santuarios, sitios sagrados, arqueologicos, cementerios y centros ceremoniales ahora!” Los Tainos acostumbraban utilizar al Centro Ceremonial para celebrar ritos tradicionales, pero ahora nuevos cambios le prohibían uso del Centro durante ciertas hora. Para los Tainos, esto fue el colmo de un conflicto patrimonial con el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña que había estada intensificando por muchos anos. El resultado fue una  ocupación y huelga de hambre que duro 17 días y llamo atención a asuntos ocultos y incontestables de la identidad Puertorriqueña.

L’archeologia è una disciplina in grado da sempre di catalizzare l’attenzione del grande pubblico e proprio per la sua indiscutibile capacità di impattare sulla società la sua percezione oscilla nettamente tra due opposte visioni.
Se da una parte, infatti, una componente essenziale del fascino che esercita è  il frutto di un retaggio ottocentesco della disciplina che confina l’archeologo a figura di avventuriero, esploratore, scopritore di tesori; dall’altra parte l’archeologia è vista come materia da specialisti, con un linguaggio spesso incomprensibile e a volte “fastidioso" intralcio al progresso. Emerge dunque nettamente una polarizzazione tra rappresentazioni fortemente stereotipate dell’archeologo e del suo lavoro.
In questo quadro qual è l’impatto dei media nel raccontare, orientare e veicolare l’immaginario pubblico? L’uso di parole quali “straordinaria, incredibile, eccezionale” applicato alle nuove scoperte archeologiche e la ricerca del sensazionalismo a tutti i costi procede di pari passo con l’attribuzione del ruolo di capri espiatori agli archeologi quando le ricerche archeologiche, spesso comunicate in modo scorretto dagli stessi operatori del settore , sembrano rallentare o compromettere la realizzazione di grandi opere. Così gli addetti ai lavori si trasformano improvvisamente da “scopritori della nuova Pompei” a “quelli che fermano i lavori”.
L’avvento di internet e dei new media ha inevitabilmente accentuato questo processo in virtù del ben noto fenomeno del clickbaiting, volto essenzialmente a monetizzare di volta in volta curiosità o indignazione: titoli a tutta pagina che attirano click e condivisioni social con bacheche spesso invase da notizie approssimative se non addirittura fake news.
È possibile auspicare una terza via? Esistono buone pratiche di racconto dell’archeologia e degli archeologi che superino questa dicotomia bene/male e che rendano conto invece delle diverse sfaccettature di una professione e di una disciplina che per sua natura dovrebbero relazionarsi con il pubblico? E i social media che ruolo possono avere in questo processo?

Pensado como lugar de encontro entre os diversos grupos sociais, sensível a reivindicações e conflitos, o Museu tem como desafio constante a multiplicação de olhares sobre o passado, mediada por uma diversidade de registros arqueológicos, dentre os quais, o próprio sítio que o abrigará.
Os primeiros anos de trabalho foram dedicados à orientação dos projetos de obras emergenciais e de restauro, à pesquisa acadêmica e ao levantamento de materiais e temas de interesse.
Restará aos próximos anos, aproximar o Museu de seus objetivos, promovendo ações antes mesmo de abrir as portas, e ainda propor alternativas para a gestão do patrimônio arqueológico local.
Para tanto, o futuro Museu de Arqueologia e Antropologia de Pelotas conta com a colaboração de professores, técnicos e estudantes da UFPel dedicados às áreas de Museologia, Conservação e Restauro, Antropologia, Arqueologia e História.
