Archéogeographie

In 2003, in the list of programmes in the field of archaeogeography published in the revue, Études Rurales, Joëlle Burnouf, in her article entitled, “la nature des médiévistes” invited a re-evaluation of ideas on the landscapes of the Middle Ages and a different articulation of social and physical data. She called for, “a repositioning of researchers” on this question, which for her had become “indispensable”, and put forward as a precondition the need to get past the modern division between nature and culture, thereby questioning the expression, “societies-environments”, which she had played a role in popularising. It is precisely in this sense that the science of archaeogeography understands the renewal of landscape analysis, whether it be with a long-term view or for studying the projects undertaken by medieval societies to improve their environments. The research on this theme by today’s medievalists no longer resembles that of fifteen years ago. We will present a panorama of them which will permit us to demonstrate the pertinence of Joëlle Burnouf‘s intuitions in the redefinition of the study of medieval landscapes.

Résumé : La pratique archéologique a beaucoup changée
avec l'arrivée de nouvelles techniques et de nouvelles approches
intellectuelles. Les outils informatiques, comme le SIG, habituellement
utilisés par les géographes peuvent ouvrir des perspectives innovantes, à condition que les archéologues intègrent leur réflexion dans une démarche de "longue durée" avec une attention { la qualité et { la nature des informations traitées. Les techniques ne doivent pas être séparés d'une réflexion éptémologique. C'est ce que propose l'archéogéographie e ayant une vision analytique et critique des objets géo-historiques. Afin
d’exposer l'état de ces questions en Roumanie, nous avons replacé s
travaux récents dans l'histoire de la "carte archéologique nationale"
roumaine. Puis, cinq exemples d'analyses de sites historiques et
archéologiques autour de la basse vallée du Danube proposent cinq
thématiques de recherche parmi d’autres dans le domaine de la
construction des systèmes paysagers : le rôle des systèmes hydrauliques,
les sites archéologiques dans les zones humides, la notion de stabilité
paysagère dans la longue durée, la résilience des éléments paysagers, la planification paysagère.

Summary : Archaeological practising has changed a lot
with the new technologies and new intellectual approaches. IT tools, such
as GIS, usually used by geographers may open innovative perspectives, only
if archaeologists integrate their thinking in a process of "longue durée"
with a special attention to the quality and nature of the informatio processed.  The  techniques  should  not  be  separated  from  a epistemological reflection. This is what the archeogeography provides in
having an analytical and critical view of the geo-historical objects. To show
the status of these issues in Romania, we replace the rect works in the
history of the Romanian "national archaeological map". Then, five examples
of analyzes of historical and archaeological sites around the Lower Danube
Valley suggest five research topics, among others, in the fiel o
