Amphorae (Archaeology)

The so called "Halieutic Testaccio" from Roman Gades, a public artificial hill at the entrance of the outer harbour of Gades is presented (I c. BC - I c. AD). It's a recent archaeological find after two years of rescue archaeology at Cádiz city centre.

Dans le cadre du projet international « VII Regio. Le Val d’Elsa pendant l’époque romaine et l’Antiquité tardive », une mission de recherche archéologique dirigée par l’UCLouvain depuis 2005, fouille le site d’Aiano-Torraccia di Chiusi : une villa longinqua de la Toscane du Nord dont la datation remonte à la fin du IIIe s. ap. J.-C. ou au début du IVe s. ap. J.-C., et qui se caractérise par sa monumentalité architecturale et sa richesse décorative.

La vie de la villa comporte plusieurs phases : un réaménagement important à la fin du IVe s. ap. J.-C. a été mis en évidence tandis que vers la fin du siècle suivant, une fois que le site est abandonné, elle subit les premières spoliations de matériaux. In fine, au cours des VIe et VIIe siècles ap. J.-C., la villa en ruines est occupée par des groupes d’artisans, dont la culture matérielle est manifestement allochtone et qui y installent des ateliers pour le traitement du fer, du verre, de l’or et probablement aussi du bronze. Dans les ateliers, les matières premières des activités de recyclage sont les matériaux tirés du démontage de murs et des éléments décoratifs et fonctionnels de la villa (les enduits peints des murs, les marqueteries en marbre des pavements, les mosaïques, les tuyaux en plomb du système hydraulique etc.).

Concernant les récipients de transport, les fouilles ont livré des fragments appartenant à des amphores apparentées au type dit « Empoli » dont la circulation se situe aux IVe et Ve s. ap. J.-C. L’analyse stratigraphique de ces trouvailles a permis de formuler quelques hypothèses quant au réseau de commerce où s’insérait la vie de la villa durant la transition entre Antiquité tardive et haut Moyen-âge.

One-day seminar on the recent developments on the study of the stamps sealed on Phoenician and Punic amphorae, focusing on the western Mediterranean and particular case studies such as Gadir (modern Cadiz Bay). Speakers will discuss the origin and development of this practice, but also its relation with other key economic aspects such as the rise of monetarized economies in the area or the changes developed after the Roman conquest (introduction of Latin inscriptions, changes in typologies of the ceramic vessels, etc.).

The article is devoted to the assemblage of finds from the well excavated
by the State Hermitage archaeological mission under the direction of K.S. Gorbunova in
1963–1964 on the Berezan island. Transport amphorae are represented by the Samian,
Lesbian and Klazomenian production. In addition, fragments of handles belonging to
Cypriot basket-handle amphorae appear in the same deposit. The filling of the well
contained the significant number of complete and fragmented tableware vessels of the
Corinthian, Chian, Attic, North and South Ionian production.
The dating of painted pottery fits into the narrow chronological limits of the second
– early third quarters of the 6th century BC. The deposit of the well is close to the ’border’
deposits and structures precedent to the early stage of the mass construction of stone-and mudbrick
houses in the third quarter of the 6th century BC. Probably, the well is
synchronous with the dugouts of the second quarter of that century but it was filled up in
the course of the rapid urbanization of the colony in the 540s BC or slightly later.

Results of the excavations carried out by the University of Cadiz in the Colegio Mayor Universitario site, located in the northern island identified with the Erytheia cited by some ancient authors. A Phoenician well was partially excavated, providing a new stratigraphy for this part of the ancient settlement of Gadir, not far from the seaport channel and La Caleta area. The pottery and other remains unearthed in the well and nearby document the changes in land use operated in the western side of Erytheia island between the 7th c. BC and the early Roman stage.

the ancient city of Simena, in the present Üçağız
Village of Demre District of Antalya Province.
We performed marine surveys on the island
shores as part of our 2017-2018 campaign. The
surveys focused on three areas; a natural bay
currently called “Tersane Koyu” (Shipyard Bay)
and the area beyond the bay; Northern Settlement,
which consists of a shoreline of about 1
km on the northern slope of the island; and the
modern lighthouse, marking the east end of the
island (

Underwater surveys were conducted in Phaselis South Harbor Area in 2018. In the underwater surveys, architectural components, metal objects, roof tiles, floor tiles, terracotta pots and numerous amphora fragments were identified and documented in the South Harbor Area. The amphorae documented underwater are the subject of the study. These amphoras were examined in terms of origin and form and suggestions for history were made. These amphoras, which do not have any shipwerck or in-sutu finds, have been made date suggestions and detailed drawings and detailed explanations have been made. In this context, seven different amphora forms were found to belong to five different origins. The earliest amphora of the study was the AE 1-A form of Egyptian origin dating to the last quarter of the 3rd century BC and the first quarter of the 2nd century BC. The latest example is the Marmara originated Günsenin (Ganos) type IV amphora dated to the 12th-13th century AD. The fact that these amphoras found in the South Harbor Area were first studied by us and the origin and dates of the amphoras as a criterion in determining the commercial functions of the South Harbor are also important.
