Lieux d'Europe. Mythes et limites (Places of Europe, Myths and Limits)

Where, how, by whom and for what were the first museums of contemporary art created? These are the key questions addressed by J. Pedro Lorente in this book. In it he explores the concept and history of museums of contemporary art, and the shifting ways in which they have been imagined and presented.
Following an introduction that sets out the historiography and considering questions of terminology, the first part of the book then examines the paradigm of the Musée des Artistes Vivants in Paris and its equivalents in the rest of Europe during the nineteenth century. The second part takes the story forward from 1930 to the present, presenting New York's Museum of Modern Art as a new universal role model that found emulators or 'contramodels' in the rest of the Western world during the twentieth century. An epilogue, reviews recent museum developments in the last decades.
Through its adoption of a long-term, worldwide perspective, the book not only provides a narrative of the development of museums of contemporary art, but also sets this into its international perspective. By assessing the extent to which the great museum-capitals – Paris, London and New York in particular – created their own models of museum provision, as well as acknowledging the influence of such models elsewhere, the book uncovers fascinating perspectives on the practice of museum provision, and reveals how present cultural planning initiatives have often been shaped by historical uses.
Contents: Introduction; Part I The Parisian Musée du Luxembourg as a Paradigm in the 19th Century: The origin of the Musée des Artistes Vivants in Paris; The first emulators and alternatives to the Luxembourg; Unresolved dilemmas in the last third of the 19th century; Utopian ideas and experiments at the turn of the 19th century. Part II The Role of the MoMA of New York as the International Model of the 20th Century: Foundations and context of the MoMA's creation; MoMA's transition to adulthood amidst war and confrontations; MoMA as an international role model during the Cold War: triumph and opposition; The Pompidou Centre, a counter-model which ends up imitating MoMA; Topographic review of the new museums of contemporary art at the turn of the millennium; Epilogue; References; Index.

Performing Medicine: Medical Culture and Identity in Provincial England, c. 1760-1850

When did medicine become modern? This book takes a fresh look at one of the most important questions in the history of medicine. It explores how the cultures, values and meanings of medicine were transformed across the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as its practitioners came to submerge their local identities as urbane and learned gentlemen into the ideal of a nationwide and scientifically-based medical profession.
Moving beyond traditional accounts of professionalization it adopts a cultural historical approach to the subject, demonstrating how visions of what medicine was and might be were shaped by wider social and political forces, from the eighteenth-century values of civic gentility to the radical and socially progressive ideologies of the age of reform. Focusing on the provincial English city of York, it draws on a rich and wide-ranging archival record, including letters, diaries, newspapers and portraits, to reveal how these changes took place at the level of everyday practice, experience and representation.
Performing medicine reveals the cultural and ideological roots of modern British medicine, including its emphasis upon the values of expertise and public service. It therefore has important implications for the way we think about medicine in the present day, especially in its relationship to the public and the state. As such it will be of interest to those who are concerned with British medicine’s current state and future course and will prove invaluable to historians of medicine as well as to students of civic culture and the age of reform.
At Europe's Borders: Medieval Towns in the Romanian Principalities
transl. in English by Valentin Cirdei

It is the only work of its kind in English, but at the same time the first in the field seeking to identify and substantiate common elements between towns in this area of Europe. It also covers Poland, Hungary and the lands south of the Danube. By relying both on various written sources, and on archeological finds, the author addresses several controversial issues, starting from the particulars of urbanization, through an analysis of local institutions, of urban society and economy, and concluding with thorough case studies. The result is a book which shows that medieval towns in the Romanian Principalities, despite being on the outskirts of Europe, were nevertheless part of it.

The Magical Imagination: Magic and Modernity in Urban England, 1780-1914
by Karl Bell

Previous studies of modern popular magical practices and supernatural beliefs have largely neglected the urban experience. This study examines the magical imagination as a key cultural resource which granted an empowering sense of plebeian agency in the nineteenth-century urban environment. Rather than portraying magical beliefs and practices as a mere enclave of anachronistic 'tradition' and the fantastical as simply an escapist refuge from the real, this study explores magic's adaptive and transformative qualities and the ways in which it helped ordinary people navigate, adapt to and resist aspects of modern urbanization. Drawing on perspectives from cultural anthropology, sociology, folklore and urban studies, this book seeks to contribute to our understanding of modern popular magic and the lived experience of modernization and urbanization.

In this comprehensive work, Tyrone R. Simpson, II, explores how six American writers - Anzia Yezierska, Michael Gold, Hubert Selby Jr., Chester Himes, Gloria Naylor, and John Edgar Wideman - have artistically responded to the racialization of U.S. frostbelt cities in the twentieth century. By using the critical tools of spatial theory, critical race theory, urban history, and urban sociology, Simpson accounts for how these writers imagine the subjective response to the race-making power of space.
"Taking the ghetto as a race-making institution dependent on technologies of im/mobility, Tyrone Simpson offers a lucid analysis of the urban ecology of twentieth century U.S. fiction. Giving new meaning to the fine art of close reading, he approaches the spatial as a dense psychic territory, one that requires an interdisciplinary array of knowledges to adequately parse. This is a vibrant literary engagement with critical race theory." - Robyn Wiegman, Professor, Literature and Women's Studies, Duke University, author of American Anatomies: Theorizing Race and Gender and Object Lessons
'Tyrone Simpson gives us a compelling portrait of the historic pain and hope seared into America's rust belt ghettos. Under Simpson's deft prose, a new voice to understanding these racialized spaces – the engaged writer – is powerfully revealed.' - David Wilson, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
