Two research themes are particularly representative of Raymond Descat’s scholarly career : the ancient economy and Asia Minor.
It is around these two themes, which he contributed widely to enlighten, that thirty-five colleagues, friends and former students from twelve countries have gathered to honour him on the occasion of his retirement by offering twenty-nine studies.
This volume celebrates a scientific career of international standing whose variety of approaches is mirrored by these essays which discuss ancient, social and economic history, historiography, archaeology, epigraphy, metrology and numismatics.

The papers exemplify a range of possible approaches to studying and, within limits, quantifying aspects of agricultural production in the Roman world, and casting light on the structure and performance of that sector of the economy, on the basis of widely different sources of evidence – historical, papyrological and archaeological. The volume aims to move substantially beyond the simple assumption that agriculture was the dominant sector of the ancient economy, and to explore what was special and distinctive about the Roman economy in terms, for example, of state involvement and institutional infrastructure, or the phenomenon of market-oriented surplus production based around the villa system. What is especially new and distinctive about this book is its focus on marshalling a large quantity of evidence, both archaeological and documentary, to address large questions of the structure and performance of the agricultural economy of the Roman world. In particular, it offers a means of analysing investment in agricultural facilities, and tracks variation in patterns across time and across regions within the empire.

The colony of Valentia minted three issues of coins, each of them in the name of a pair of different magistrates (quaestores). The types chosen for the obverse and reverse are repeated in all the denominations and they are a copy of the Roman denarii struck by Q. Fabius Maximus (RRC 265/1). On the obverse it shows the helmeted head of Rome and on the reverse a cornucopia on a thunderbolt. The first issue was minted by the magistrates C. Lucienus and C Munius, the second by T. Ahius and L. Trinius and the third by L Coranius and C. Numius. The coinages were issued from the foundation of the colony in the year 138 BC. to the Sertonian wars (ca. 80-72 B.C.). The magistrates were of Italic origin, according to their personal names.
The book presents an exhaustive catalogue and die study of the colonial coinages of Valentia.

The individual case studies focus on fertility, mortality and migration and the roles they played in various aspects of ancient life. These studies – drawn from a range of populations in Athens and Attica, Rome and Italy, and Graeco-Roman Egypt – illustrate how new insights can be gained by applying demographic methods to familiar themes in ancient history. Methodological issues are addressed in a clear, straightforward manner with no assumption of prior technical knowledge, ensuring that the book is accessible to readers with no training in demography. The book marks an important step forward in ancient historical demography, affirming both the centrality of population studies in ancient history and the contribution that antiquity can make to population history in general.

Andrew realises that he has stumbled across evidence for the location of the lost tomb of Iran's most famous emperor, Shapur the Great, and, after the sudden and violent death of a long-time colleague in Damascus, he becomes determined to uncover the secrets embedded in the inscription to prevent a sinister and shadowy Iranian nationalist group, the Sons of Cyrus, from reaching their goal. Together with help from Rachel Campion, a journalist who has had her own brush with the Sons of Cyrus, and Rachel's brother Jack, a British diplomat, Andrew embarks on a quest which takes him to some of the most secretive and spectacular archaeological sites of the Middle East. From the forgotten city of Madain Salih in Saudi Arabia to the rose-red Syrian city of Palmyra, and from abandoned Roman fortresses on the Euphrates to the ancient church of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Andrew and Rachel battle unseen forces to prevent an international catastrophe which threatens to destroy the prospects for peace in the Middle East once and for all.
